It's part gothic nightmare, part love story, part salvagpunk story that is really A GOOD LOVE STORY. I often read it over and over for it moody atmosphere.
The characters are well thought out and lovely, the story is haunting and I highly recommend it. It's a romance, but even if you don't read the genre, this is a story that crosses over. Hancock loves how words feel and if you read it aloud, you can feel her passion.

It's much better than the first one because the author got to develop the mermaid mythology more and I just loved the hero. While this is a paranormal romance for the Harlequin Nocturne line, this is one big plot of danger, suspense, and intrigue. I am serious. The heroine is involved with an old boyfriend and business that drags her into a pretty serious plot that involves bombs and murder and greed. I don't want to spoil it but it's incredible how Herbert weaves all that ranger in a what is a powerful romance between a man and woman who have serious trust issues.
I love how family is involved. Herbert did that in her first book, but in this one, it's even more developed and so smooth.
This is probably my favorite Nocturne writer. I can't wait to read the next book because it has my favorite mermaid in it. O.M.G.
Don't miss this book. It's really a good story....more

It's been a long time since I read so many romance novels and now that I am back in the groove of reading them and dark fantasy novels, I have come to appreciate how well written this book is. It's very clever and has a BIG PLOT for such a small book, meaning this book is part of the Harlequin Nocturne line and usually the books do not have this much story.
I loved the story. It's about a mermaid who witnesses a serial killer dumping a body in the sea. And wow, that is one developed serial killer. He's mean and nasty. It also has what I love in a book, a story about family. The hero is in law enforcement and his younger brother is autistic, a topic that everyone should pay special attention to since so many children suffer from forms of it. I loved all this family drama contrasting with the story of the mermaid in danger from a very angry killer.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and I consider it a book many would love. Disclaimer: Debbie is a friend of mine, but I rated her like I would a stranger. Laughing....more

A couple of authors are too graphic for me. I really enjoyed this book, the first in this series. I understand the books got better as the series continued. I'll read them all. I liked the plot, yes it had a plot, the new take on how vampires came to be here and how there is a war between various factions of vampires. Nice book. It's the first time I've read a romance like this in years. Perhaps because it was a novella, the author was able to offer incredible pacing and the story did not go on too long. It was no more than a few scenes, played out quickly where a couple meet who are destined to be mates forever. Well written. I liked it a lot....more

As a Roswell fan, I love the idea of a girl in a small town meeting a guy who turns out to be from far, far away. Like another planet, Lux. What I didn't expect was to laugh so much while reading this book. To really really enjoy it. I adore these characters. They are written so well. Obsidian is a great "falling in love" story between the bad boy Daemon Black and the wonderful heroine he calls Kitten. Oh, gods. What a story. It's one of the best romance novels I've read, with nothing graphic or over the top. That's saying a lot. The tension and chemistry between these two characters, well both are just awesome. All superlatives! Laughing.
The truth, this is a very simple story, written well, with lots of chemistry, a mild plot, and great action scenes. There are some minor complaints, but they are so minor they are not even worth writing about. This story accomplished everything it promised and it did it perfectly.
I'm going to read the rest of the series. Also, at the end is a couple of chapters from Daemon. So good.

And it's from Cole's point of view, which is awesome. It's hard to feel sorry for this bad boy, but I do. And like I wrote in my review of Everneath, I don't know how this story is going to turn out. It's not predictable. The author knows how to manipulate the reader, which is author's job! I am just hanging and from what I hear, I will be shocked with the second book.
But this story is about Cole.
So Cole has been punished. Yes. I think he suffered. Will he be punished even more? Probably. Will he get what he wants? Hmmm. I don't know. And what does he really want now?
Deep down inside, I think he wants forgiveness from Nikki, that he needs Nikki to care about him, to forgive him. No matter what happens. And who knows what will happen? I certainly don't.
I will be satisfied whatever because this series is so well written and I love these characters. I love the mythology. And I truly believe I am in for some good surprises.
No, buy it. Read it. I recommend it.
A book like this is not easy to write. The author makes it look easy. But I can tell you it's not. Great work....more

Everneath gives paranormal romance a lift in this retelling of Persephone and Hades myth. Certainly not the same old story and what makes this story rise above so many others is the complexity of this story and its characters which as first appear as one thing and then turn out to be another altogether. This is a writer who does not let you know how it's going to turn out. What appears simple is not. This is layered writing where each and every word counts. So take note.
I've read this book three times this year. Each time, I see something new and wonder how the story is going to turn out. Because people are flawed and they make decisions based on feelings and you just never know if they are the right ones. Love matters here.
Nikki, Jack, and Cole. What a different kind of triangle. In fact, this is probably the best love triangle, because it's real and there are choices to be made. And all three characters make choices, some good, some bad.
I can honestly say (and this hardly ever happens) that I do not know how this series is going to turn out. It's that clever. I just read a review of book 2 which comes out in January 2013. And the author raises the complexity and stakes more. The reader still does not know what is going to happen.
For paranormal romance, very simple and beautiful prose, for a different kind of love triangle, and a nice retelling of my favorite Greek myth, this is the series to read. If you are wanting to write YA, do take note. This series went to auction and it's one of the deals I think where the hype was worth it....more

It's the tale of a young girl, who is many ways is typical, only she lives in a city that war torn, and she's the daughter of an important politician. What I like about her is that she is typical in her adolescence and so forth. No super powers, not chosen, and she's king of lonely.
Then she meets the guy who is one JUST ONE BIG PROBEM after another. He's the chosen one.
Also, in some ways, this is a book about race and racism, and I don't see anyone mentioning this. The guy is mixed race, and his mother's race lives on the other side of a WALL in this city.
Can you imagine. A wall? Does anyone see the connections to walls built in our modern world to keep people out or in?
Also, this is probably (outside one other book) THE BEST BOOK written in first person present tense, a technique that can be miserable to read and explain. I was really amazed at how well the author did this. I just reread this book for the 4th time to see how well she did that. Normally, I do not like books in this tense. It's almost always wrong.
This is also a great love story, a story full of good world building, and some big surprises. It's gritty and dark, and dangerous. Love is dangerous. I like that. It's a good book for young girls to read. ...more
