I'm one of those who wants that HEA / HFN endings. To a certain degree this book gives the reader hope / glimpse into a possibly happy future but not in the traditional sense. On that note, this story was a little too dark for me. I don't want to finish a story being sad or feeling like real life has intruded upon my fairy tale. Yet, the story kept me intrigued. The details of the setting were rich, and I did feel as though I learned some interesting cultural / historical facts within the reading. Overall, I'm glad I read it. I was surprised by the ending with the relationship being a little more resolved than I had expected. The story is definitely more focused on relationships even though the story is fueled by betrayal and intrigue. For those not on or at least not firmly on the HFN bandwagon, I would most definitely recommend. I also feel those who appreciate flawed main characters who find ways to overcome will appreciate this story. If you read m/m for lots of hot sex and/or romance then this is not your book....more

I loved that it was a boy band that had aged and gracefully moved on to other things. I loved how the father was so confident and secure even when caught in a compromising position. I was relieved that their instant and strong attraction did not lead to declarations of love but instead to the desire to explore "whatever" they had found more thoroughly. We get to see their love, but it's a year later. For the length, I was more than impressed with the story and character development....more

Everything I'd completed (since my initial thoughts) was lost. This, for me, is the really hard / time consuming part. After multiple attempts, my GdRd shelves would still not come up. I could not redo then continue my review while it was fresh. I am not willing to try and reform everything I'd completed. I decided to do an abbreviated review, but leave my initial thoughts below.)
I feel really conflicted about this story. I have not even decided my personal rating much less the one for Goodreads (a much more objective rating). After writing my initial thoughts, I decided to read others' reviews to see if I could get things to crystallize in my mind. After reading over 30, I found myself in the unusual position of agreeing with both the positive and negative reviewers most of the time. Many of them didn't even contradict one another. They just focused in on different things during their review.
This is what I do know: The writing was far better than many stories within m/m. I did have some issues with the editing and flow, but nothing that ruined the story for me. I do feel the relationship of the two main characters was, by far, the weakest part of the story. Yet I think Roger, himself, was one of the best well developed characters I've read about in a long time.
I definitely feel the story is worth the read, even if you are like me and don't necessarily come out loving it.
Initial Unpolished Thoughts: - Had a few editing issues and at times too much going on. Plus it often feels important things are glossed over. - Feels more like a old school detective story than m/m romance yet with interesting fresh twist. May not resonate with those looking for "romance". - Procedural stuff felt authentic - BDSM both is and isn't focus point. Most BDSM squeamish people could read. - Sex is also not focus point though it does have sex scenes. This is not what I would call PWP (Porn With Plot). - Didn't like how the 1st penetration scene was handled for multiple reasons. - Author's details were spot on without being too much especially when referencing previous decades. - I liked it but there is something that I just can't put my finger on that kept me from loving it. Maybe a bunch of little things that really added up??? - Loved Roger being concerned to really worried about discovery but never holding back vital info especially from partner. - Loved partner. Strong likable woman which is not always as common in m/m. - Not sure of what changed or really given clear insight into why old body dug up. Why after so much time? Why then? We're given the impetus for the new killings and kidnapping plus why Roger. How did, if they did, the possible faked suicides fit in? The killer certainly couldn't have tortured those as he liked. - Liked the part with old mentor helping them get past all the "stuff" at the end - Sean's character felt off. Plus, didn't seem nearly as well developed. The build up to their relationship wasn't well developed either. - The evolution of the club was confusing along with exactly where Peter worked currently or what Jay owned etc......more

I definitely feel that one should read the previous books to get everything out of this one, but I do think it could be read without feeling too lost. I loved seeing more of the King and his Consort. The whole family and their dynamics are wonderfuland well drawn. I hope we learn more about Seb's father in a later book. It appears to be his husband and son that are the problem. The book is rich in detail even the horses have personalities. You never forget it is a Regency society even if it is on another planet. The IN mystery had little to do with this story until the end, but it did progress. Sebastian and Colton were touching as they dealt with their previous roles and grew into their new ones with each other. Their honesty with each other even when slow in coming was refreshing. It's a beautiful story first. There is sex and it is hot, but it is a bonus not the purpose. This is a novel not just easy fluff. There is obvious effort in the writing, and the editing. It was meant to be done well not fast, though the fans of this series are always clamoring for more....more

There is a plot inbetween all the sex scenes. One that gets quite serious dealing with politics and blind ambition along with family dynamics. It didn't just wow me, but that's harder and harder to do as one reads more and more especially in a particular genre. It was solid with very little that threw me out of the story. I was surprised at how easily I accepted the characters blending, but I believed it of them and how they were drawn....more
