It's what I call brain candy; a little sugary, over in quick bites, a nice filler but not substantial. A good story to read on a day when one's focus is shot or when feeling lazy etc...(less)

The Sex was really hot but did not overpower the story. The story was interesting and at times suspenseful. If you want to go along for a ride with a HEA this is your book especially if you like undercover stories. If you are a hardcore reader that analyzes everything, then I'd still recommend it but with a warning. There was a plot hole that effected a few events that briefly threw me out of the book. I commented on those below during the progress. But it wasn't so completely unbelievable, that it wasn't even remotely plausible, especially if factoring in a few cultural things. I thought about it, then I decided to just go with it. Kind of like with James Bond ;o) It did not effect the enjoyment of the story for me. I loved the two main characters. I found the handling of one being both gay and Arabic fascinating. I felt it was handled well. The plot was somewhat as expected with this genre, but it had enough unique twists to keep it interesting. I had a hard time putting this one down. I don't say that a lot anymore being such a heavy m/m reader.(less)

Thoughts: I like a lot of sex in my m/m reading, but even I skimmed through some of the scenes in this story. If you like fantasy and/or historical types this will probably be a good read. If you like complex storylines and political intrigue, this is your book. On the other hand if m/m/m is not your thing, you may want to stay away. This book is definitely not for those who don't like SERIOUSLY flawed characters who evolve, but don't really have changes in their moral compass by many of societal standards. This is a series, so it may come; but do not read if at least a HFN ending is required.
The world building was really good. The intrigue well done. The characters were multi-layered and stayed true to their character. A lot is required of both the reader and the characters. This is not a light easy read, but in the end the journey is worth it. I do not intend on continuing the series at this time, but that is strictly due to personal preferences and knowledge of upcoming plot twists that push way more than one of my "no go" buttons.(less)

I tend to rate things based on what they are; meaning I rate a quickie as a quickie. You can't expect the same things in comparison to a longer story. That said, the author did amazingly well with the setting, the characters, and the story. The ending did feel a little abrupt but not so much as to feel cheated. The scene with the BJ was extremely hot. There was a nice balance between sex and story. In comparison to most stories of this size, it is definitely 5 stars in my book especially if you like vampires or the idea of a male "Pretty Woman". He was a male not a chick with dick.(less)

The characters were interesting enough & the reading easy. Lots of sex which is a large part of what I like about m/m. If I have a complaint, it was just that nothing stood out or made it particularly memorable. Struggling with the rating. I really wish I could give half stars, but I will round my 3.5 to a 4 on GdRds.(less)

The story had some wonderful twists & turns. The characters were very well developed. When you read a lot especially within one particular genre, it becomes rare to be surprised. This author did it multiple times from little things all the way to plot twists. I was particularly impressed with how she subtly showed Laurie's acting abilities in multiple ways all along before asking us to accept his triumphant debut on any stage. The supporting characters were 3 dimensional & often realistically complex. There were so many difficult social issues tackled in this book, that I feared it would get bogged down. It didn't. For me Harper did a masterful job of balancing by not just glossing over them either. There was one glaring exception at the end, but it did not ruin it. I, like another reviewer, thought it would be a historical. It is not if that is all you are looking to read. At times it does have an old world feel. It also has a very authentic feel of what most of us would call the gypsy culture. I loved how well it was both described & explained. I would feel comfortable suggesting this book to most anyone unless they strictly wanted something light, historical, or PWP. There were sex scenes & they were hot, but they were not what drives this story. They served a purpose in moving the story or characters along. It was a beautiful story where the characters fell in love despite incredible differences & hardships in a way that I believed. Even with the HEA you were left with the sense they knew life would never be easy for them.(less)

It was the last part of this book that saved it for me. I thought the differences about kids was handled well with POV's & reasonings explained along with the factors that caused this to change. I did feel Julian was way too overbearing in many things but thankfully not this. I would have liked to know more about RJ's dad's occupation. We know he's super rich with powerful friends that are connected, but not a hint of how (e.g.; mob, silver spoon, tech genius etc...???). I also felt the ending was rushed but still satisfying. The 1st half made me extremely uncomfortable in many ways from character actions / reactions to some word over use. I'm not sorry I read this book, but I definitely had a lot more issues with it than the rest of the series.(less)

A tad slow for me in places. Unlike a lot of people, I read Glitter first immediately followed by this book. (Glitter = Prequel that came out after the 1st 2 books in this series). I absolutely LOVED it. That is relevant because the only places I got thrown out of this story were during J & L's backstory ( Glitter's m/c's & the grooms in this one). There seemed to be some inconsistencies that just kind of threw me dealing with them. It is understandable since they didn't have their own book at the time she wrote this story. I liked this, but not nearly as much. The gay 4 you I didn't feel was developed quite as well, but still better than many books. That & the relationship moved a little too quick to feel real with as much baggage as both characters were bringing. Still an enjoyable read with hot sex that I look for in my m/m.(less)

Definitely as much if not more about Simon & Gray than Cade & Rocky. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Loved the addition of Riley. Good to see a strong woman in Aunt Maggie. I look forward to seeing both couples continue to grow in future editions.(less)

I'm one of those who wants that HEA / HFN endings. To a certain degree this book gives the reader hope / glimpse into a possibly happy future but not in the traditional sense. On that note, this story was a little too dark for me. I don't want to finish a story being sad or feeling like real life has intruded upon my fairy tale. Yet, the story kept me intrigued. The details of the setting were rich, and I did feel as though I learned some interesting cultural / historical facts within the reading. Overall, I'm glad I read it. I was surprised by the ending with the relationship being a little more resolved than I had expected. The story is definitely more focused on relationships even though the story is fueled by betrayal and intrigue. For those not on or at least not firmly on the HFN bandwagon, I would most definitely recommend. I also feel those who appreciate flawed main characters who find ways to overcome will appreciate this story. If you read m/m for lots of hot sex and/or romance then this is not your book.(less)

Plus reading "Warrior's Cross" would be beneficial to have Julian & Cameron's story but not as necessary. I like the m/c's from this story though not as well as C&R's. I'm a pretty laid back reader, so I didn't have the complaints a lot of the other readers did. I still really enjoy this series, & yes I include these in with the original C&R books.(less)

But it's very, very, hot erotica which has been harder to find, since I've hit the 1000+ m/m mark. I think most sites that either sell or review romance/erotica do a disservice by not having a separate heat rating; notable exceptions being ARE & Ellora. I prefer a decent amount of Smut with my reading. In fact I expect it for m/m. I also knew what I was getting. I bought this off a site with Stars for story plus stars for the heat level. If you want more story than sex... This is not your book. If you haven't read the Cut & Run series, & you want to understand what is going on outside of the sex; then this is not your book. For the most part, it should not be considered the 1st of a new series.
It does have some leanings to the "chick w/ dick", but I didn't feel it was anything like some other reviewers felt. I also thought Roux set it up with the earlier personality comparisons. Plus Kelly has never seemed as hardcore as the others when he's popped up in previous C&R books. Let's also not forget the man has been shot, nearly died, & is drugged to the guills. That's not even counting the whole emotional turmoil of Gay4 you & crossing BF lines.
I for one like how the last few books with basically the same characters have all had completely different feels: Fluffier, to full of angst, to pure erotica. It keeps a series from getting stale or seeming to always be the same formula just different events.(less)
