If you want an original, interesting, read under the fantasy genre, then this should be a good read. The story lags mildly in some places, but otherwise it held my interest well. The world building was phenomenal. The stasis was terrifying. The Chief's youngest son had some painful growing up to do, and it was handled deftly by this author especially as he became more aware of the plight of slaves in society. I'm interested in seeing how the story progresses. The changes in Lark were heartbreaking as were the details of their mother's death....more

Parts of it felt recycled from the 1st story. Plus for me, it didn't have the same level of suspense or romance. It wasn't a bad read at all. I never wanted to just stop reading, but I did have multiple eye roll moments. The details of the minor characters and the mining area itself were still well drawn. All in all a solid 3.5 for me rounded down because of how great the 1st was in comparison....more

It was a short story in my absolute favorite genre. I have ridiculously low standards for shorts. Yet, I was still underwhelmed and very disappointed by this other story. It was with much dismay I discovered I had purchased 4 other books by this author with a historical bend to them to boot. As a rule, my least favorite genre. Thus, I decided to just get it over with and start reading with the hope the sci-fi aspect would keep it bearable. The world and character building immediately pulled me in to the story. The action and m/c's kept me there. I loved their relationship. The sex surpassed my expectations, but it didn't over run or overwhelm the plot. Christine was kick ass and very refreshing. The cult creepy and interesting. There were some surprising twists at the end after seeming like it was all going to the obvious conclusion. It was all done very well. Everyone won't love it, but there is very little to keep it from being an enjoyable read for most anyone who enjoys m/m....more

Thoughts: I like a lot of sex in my m/m reading, but even I skimmed through some of the scenes in this story. If you like fantasy and/or historical types this will probably be a good read. If you like complex storylines and political intrigue, this is your book. On the other hand if m/m/m is not your thing, you may want to stay away. This book is definitely not for those who don't like SERIOUSLY flawed characters who evolve, but don't really have changes in their moral compass by many of societal standards. This is a series, so it may come; but do not read if at least a HFN ending is required.
The world building was really good. The intrigue well done. The characters were multi-layered and stayed true to their character. A lot is required of both the reader and the characters. This is not a light easy read, but in the end the journey is worth it. I do not intend on continuing the series at this time, but that is strictly due to personal preferences and knowledge of upcoming plot twists that push way more than one of my "no go" buttons....more

I tend to rate things based on what they are; meaning I rate a quickie as a quickie. You can't expect the same things in comparison to a longer story. That said, the author did amazingly well with the setting, the characters, and the story. The ending did feel a little abrupt but not so much as to feel cheated. The scene with the BJ was extremely hot. There was a nice balance between sex and story. In comparison to most stories of this size, it is definitely 5 stars in my book especially if you like vampires or the idea of a male "Pretty Woman". He was a male not a chick with dick....more

I thought this might be my first DNF, but instead I ended up not reading any new books for 3 months. I reread old favorites while reading small sections of this story as I could. I have not gone that long since 2007 without reading something new.
I found this story disturbing on so many levels. I just plain felt icky after I was done. The authors tried ending the story with the idea of a brighter future, but I did not feel any hope for it. Nothing in how the two main captains were betrayed makes me believe their obsessions or hunting are over. The back & forth of "loved" or "not loved" (because just a possession) was confusing especially for the two antagonists. Nathaniel's cruelty seemed out of the blue & unnecessary, though an attempt was made to explain. The thinking to turn the slave into a spy was never acted upon or mentioned after his return. We were made to believe he'd fooled them. Gritty it definitely accomplished which I don't typically mind. I don't like to be all negative, so I'm not going to keep on with all my other issues etc... On a positive note, I liked Nathaniel's patience in the beginning & how the relationship developed at first. I think I will leave it at that....more

I definitely feel that one should read the previous books to get everything out of this one, but I do think it could be read without feeling too lost. I loved seeing more of the King and his Consort. The whole family and their dynamics are wonderfuland well drawn. I hope we learn more about Seb's father in a later book. It appears to be his husband and son that are the problem. The book is rich in detail even the horses have personalities. You never forget it is a Regency society even if it is on another planet. The IN mystery had little to do with this story until the end, but it did progress. Sebastian and Colton were touching as they dealt with their previous roles and grew into their new ones with each other. Their honesty with each other even when slow in coming was refreshing. It's a beautiful story first. There is sex and it is hot, but it is a bonus not the purpose. This is a novel not just easy fluff. There is obvious effort in the writing, and the editing. It was meant to be done well not fast, though the fans of this series are always clamoring for more....more

First of all, I was surprised I'd bought it. But, I guess that is why it's been languishing in my TBR pile for years. 2nd of all, I was surprised by how much I liked it. I'm not a huge fan of historical, even less so of "recent history" ones that come close to contemporary. That being said, I really liked this story. I thought the authors who make up Jamie Craig did a wonderful job of world building. The detailing felt authentic down to how hard it would be to find someone prior to the internet, cell phones, and many other things we take for granted. The details of name changing by studios or having to sit through show after show brought depth. There were serious consequences back then, but lives were a little more easily hidden. I think back to Rock Hudson, but what I really loved were the two m/c's. The young and brash versus the controlling and established. Both had to bend and grow some to make it work. It was a definitely more HFN than HEA, because they knew it wouldn't be an easy road. There would be no easy answers, but that too made it feel more real. The sex scenes were really sweet and hot. That is harder and harder to find the longer and more m/m books one reads. This was a great read for me. I would have no problem recommending this book. I feel even if one didn't love it like I did, that it would still be an enjoyable read.
I felt compelled to add to my review after reading others' reviews. There is a scene that involves girl cooties which typically is an issue for me too in my m/m books. Though I wasn't fond of it, I understood its purpose in this story. He wanted to feel loved and a connection. It was the closest he could get to his BF who wouldn't be intimate with him in any other way....more
