It's great fluff. Fun to read. Definitely fiction. If you don't really suspend belief, may not be the series for you. It is considered stand alone. I started with # 6 or 7 and have been fine, but it definitely adds to the richness to have read previous ones. The character / couples list at the back was welcome. It is getting a little confusing to keep everyone straight. It was great to see Jesse finally understand he is part of the family....more

I can't bring myself to give it a 3 or a 4. It was a very solid 3.5. There were things I loved that really set it apart from other books pushing up to a 4.5. There were things I hated which made it hard to connect to the characters or story. Both ends have things making it hard for me to be objective while reviewing / rating.
SOAP BOX TIME: I feel strongly ratings on sites like GoodReads, Amazon, ARE, ... should be as objective as possible. I shouldn't rate something a five if I can't tell you why, plus I find lots of flaws with it. I save those for my personal ratings. The reverse is also true. I feel I shouldn't rate something a 1 or even a 2 if I can't tell you why, and I didn't find flaws in the writing etc... The opinion part should come in the review not the rating IMHO. I read a very specific genre. I don't often read reviews before a book unless it's a new author, publisher, or I have concerns (Example; I typically don't like historicals. If I see one with high numbers of high ratings, then I read reviews to see if I think I might like it. A truly good story is a good story no matter what the genre.) What I personally find disheartening is seeing a low rating with a comment along the lines of "great writing etc... I just hate this______" (fill in the blank like m/m/m stories). I think that shouldn't effect ratings. The same is true for the reverse. The exception being if there are a lot of ratings already. This is one of the reasons, I've been diligently trying to back track through my books that were uploaded to GoodReads. Those were my personal ratings like what's now on my Kindle. Not ratings of the actual book/story itself. Some of my all time favorite books, I know have serious flaws. If I can't tell you why they deserve 5 stars then many I've rerated or at least explained why the 5 stars remain (life 5 stars for the hot sex alone). It's a slow process but worth it to me. So, this brings me back to this book.
I have no idea what to do with it. My obsessive side will probably make me rate it. I'm just glad it's got a lot of ratings, so mine won't matter. Plus, it's an older story which means probably no one will read this anyways ;o)...more

Personally, it's probably a 5 star book. The 4 stars given above are more about acknowledging this is probably not a story for everyone. So.... who should read this? The people who demand good writing, want more than "brain candy", like well developed multifaceted characters, and/or character studies. Who else should read this? Those that have loved someone with or are themselves: obsessive compulsive, control freaks, socially oblivious, repressed, and / or have various mental health issues especially due to early trauma.
I loved watching Con trying to figure out the puzzle that is Tim. His patience while trying to work his way under Tim's prickly exterior was beautiful. I loved how he would give Tim space but not let him completely withdraw. He attempted to educate himself and help not just bully through with what he thought was best. The sex when they were finally able to get to it was sweet and hot. I loved this story, but I'm fully aware that a lot of it could be due to the ability to relate so thoroughly.
Who shouldn't read this story? Those that: need a lot of action, don't like to wait for the sex to get started, need a lot of emotional drama / angst, prefer not to be patient for slowly unfolding plots, and / or need to be able to easily relate to both main characters.
Due to the excellent writing and obvious care, I think anyone aware of the above considerations would (at the very least) find it a worthwhile read even if it's not their "cup of tea"....more

If I have a complaint, it was just that nothing stood out or made it particularly memorable. Struggling with the rating. I'm just going to add that I think I'm done with the series. The time line stuff has started really stressing me along with a few other things. When a guilty pleasure stresses more than transports, it's time to move on to something else. Not a bad story per se, but definitely not for everyone. It is probably not for you if... Editing is important, if timelines must be clear and kept to, if you expect attention to detail, if you don't like insta-love even among shifters, if you get easily lost when there is a large crowd of minor characters, if supposedly violent men giggling a lot turns you off, if you don't like for things to pop up and be solved within a few pages, if you are irritated by saccharine etc... If on the other hand, you like to read guilty pleasures just to pass the time, then this might be great for you. The characters are likable for nearly all are hung, and perfect....more

TherAlthough I'm unsure of why, I could not stay in the story. It may just be me. It wasn't a bad story at all. I usually like sports themed stories. There have been at least two other rugby ones I've loved. This story was sweet. The author obviously knows her Rugby. The world building and character development were fine especially for the length of story. There is plenty of sex. There were no glaring editing or plot issues that completely threw me out of the story. I appreciated there wasn't a lot of dithering. It just never grabbed me, but I didn't feel I completely wasted my time either....more

I really did like the characters. I usually like lots of sex just fine (including Porn with plots (PWP)). Which I what I assumed I'd get with this book, due to the reviews of this author's other books in the series. I strictly read m/m, so I haven't read the previous books in this series. I could tell it was a part of a series, but I didn't feel like I was missing anything major.
I really liked how Alex's parents didn't end up with evil motives which is more the norm, and how Ryan viewed it all in retrospect. But despite all this, I REALLY struggled to stay inside the story. I actually found myself skimming pages which is highly unusual for me despite how much I read. I can't pinpoint one thing in particular. For me, it was just missing some key ingredient to keep me engaged....more

I definitely feel that one should read the previous books to get everything out of this one, but I do think it could be read without feeling too lost. I loved seeing more of the King and his Consort. The whole family and their dynamics are wonderfuland well drawn. I hope we learn more about Seb's father in a later book. It appears to be his husband and son that are the problem. The book is rich in detail even the horses have personalities. You never forget it is a Regency society even if it is on another planet. The IN mystery had little to do with this story until the end, but it did progress. Sebastian and Colton were touching as they dealt with their previous roles and grew into their new ones with each other. Their honesty with each other even when slow in coming was refreshing. It's a beautiful story first. There is sex and it is hot, but it is a bonus not the purpose. This is a novel not just easy fluff. There is obvious effort in the writing, and the editing. It was meant to be done well not fast, though the fans of this series are always clamoring for more....more

I'm also glad I'd skimmed the reviews, so I knew to "gird my loins". I don't typically like heavy books. As a reader, I'm an escapist not a realist. Every time I went to read it, I just couldn't. I kept wondering how I even ended up with this book.
This time last year, I had a back log of over 200 books. My new years resolution was to not buy any more books (exceptions being books in a series I'd already started) until I finished the back log. This was one of only a handful left to keep me from meeting my goal.
I'm not going to lie it is emotionally exhausting, but it did have a HEA with a twist I never saw coming. The timeline issue with all the back and forth wasn't as bad as I was expecting. It might be because being forewarned is being forarmed, and I knew to pay close attention.
I was impressed with the author's fortitude. There were no easy answers or a sudden choice that then made everything come up roses. Often the people we lie to the most are ourselves and this is the perfect example. Not a book in my typical wheelhouse, but I'm extremely glad I ended up with it and followed through with reading it....more

Completely different from the last book I read which was also 5 stars. Those are increasingly harder to come by. Some minor issues and preferences, but nothing major. A sweet well written story about two damaged men learning to let go of the past and to live within their current present. Life is not always easy or fair and the loss of one's dream can be devastating. Yet, it stayed realistic and not overly angsty as they learned to forge new paths. Hot sex to boot, though that is not what this story is about. Not everything was solved, just as in real life, but they still get their HEA!...more
