I really loved the characters. I was surprised and pleased with the twist on the killer. My problem was that I kept getting thrown out of the story with the overuse of metaphors, similes, and/or descriptive language. I'm not a terribly critical reader. I usually just let go and read, so if I'm noticing... One example; "And right into a man who, in the heat of the city, smelled of evergreen and ocean and the blue heat at the heart of the flame, of Amber and a sexuality so primal and yet so pure that it made Tag want to fall on his knees in praise of the Lord and Lady at the same time he wanted to fall on his knees and do something far naughtier." This quote is only one example and not even the best example at that. It was just the first at 3%. As someone who struggles with being wordy and conveying thoughts on paper, an editor or Beta reader with a strong ability in being concise might help. I still enjoyed the read overall, but for me it hit dead center of that Bell Curve (neither good nor bad). I would try the author again especially within Sci-fi which is my favorite. I see tons of potential....more

I do not have the same complaints as many of the other reviewers. I've been contemplating the reasons: 1) I might have lowered my expectations. Though I don't usually read the reviews right before starting, this time I had. I was pleasantly surprised as I kept reading. 2) I may just read a lot more Smut. I expect a lot of sex with most m/m books even more so the shifter ones. I actually thought it had a lot more plot than I might have expected. The m/c's are males, college age, & mated. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of sex but many scenes were implied or abbreviated as the story progressed. 3) I'm a laid back reader. I'm not a grammar/editing aficionado. It has to be repeated & really obvious for it to throw me out of a story. I don't have a preferred POV or writing style. Nor do I have certain plot themes that are almost immediate dislikes for me like "Gay 4 U", "Chicks with Dicks", "Insta-love", etc... The only thing that will regularly ruin a story for me is the lack of a HFN/HEA which does not apply to this story. 4) As for it being simplistic or obvious, maybe I'm just obtuse. I thought it was clever how Jack became Alpha. There were never an over abundance of traitor suspects basically just two, so you always had a 50/50 chance. I guess the author could have tried to throw out more red herrings. I was surprised by one person who wasn't involved.
One issue I did have was that I felt the resolution with his mate's dad was abrupt & rushed. I felt it didn't really add to the plot, wasn't very logical, seemed borderline out of character, & could have been handled much more deftly.
I could see how others were thrown by the constant "pup" reference. Though it didn't bother me, it came close.
Overall I enjoyed this story. I loved the characters including the supporting ones. I thought Salem was especially great. There were some nice twists on the werewolf lore. I felt the relationship was fleshed out well. It was a nice solid read....more

I'd go as far as to say I disliked the 1st part, yet I'm having a hard time deciphering why. Then the story gets much better, & I really enjoyed it. Almost enough to trump the rough start but not quite. One positive is I really liked both m/c's. This includes how they quickly figured out what they wanted without too much manufactured drama. On the other hand, there were way too many plot threads (Divorce, custody, mental health issues, reality TV show, Evil Producer, bandmates, new recording, comeback tour, gay 4 you, wedding trip, fake boyfriend / his brother-in-law, coming out, photog pictures, Lances past catching up etc...). The last starting way too late in the story arc. It felt entirely too rushed, plus it completely changed the feel of the story. It was wrapped up a little too quickly & neatly. Yet I did still enjoy the last section despite this. Due to having put the story down before coming back to finish it recently, I really can't be too specific on my issues with the first part of the story. But it was enough, that I stopped reading it for awhile which is something I rarely do. Overall not a bad read. I definitely don't regret getting it. 3.5 stars....more

The Sex was really hot but did not overpower the story. The story was interesting and at times suspenseful. If you want to go along for a ride with a HEA this is your book especially if you like undercover stories. If you are a hardcore reader that analyzes everything, then I'd still recommend it but with a warning. There was a plot hole that effected a few events that briefly threw me out of the book. I commented on those below during the progress. But it wasn't so completely unbelievable, that it wasn't even remotely plausible, especially if factoring in a few cultural things. I thought about it, then I decided to just go with it. Kind of like with James Bond ;o) It did not effect the enjoyment of the story for me. I loved the two main characters. I found the handling of one being both gay and Arabic fascinating. I felt it was handled well. The plot was somewhat as expected with this genre, but it had enough unique twists to keep it interesting. I had a hard time putting this one down. I don't say that a lot anymore being such a heavy m/m reader....more

Personally, it's probably a 5 star book. The 4 stars given above are more about acknowledging this is probably not a story for everyone. So.... who should read this? The people who demand good writing, want more than "brain candy", like well developed multifaceted characters, and/or character studies. Who else should read this? Those that have loved someone with or are themselves: obsessive compulsive, control freaks, socially oblivious, repressed, and / or have various mental health issues especially due to early trauma.
I loved watching Con trying to figure out the puzzle that is Tim. His patience while trying to work his way under Tim's prickly exterior was beautiful. I loved how he would give Tim space but not let him completely withdraw. He attempted to educate himself and help not just bully through with what he thought was best. The sex when they were finally able to get to it was sweet and hot. I loved this story, but I'm fully aware that a lot of it could be due to the ability to relate so thoroughly.
Who shouldn't read this story? Those that: need a lot of action, don't like to wait for the sex to get started, need a lot of emotional drama / angst, prefer not to be patient for slowly unfolding plots, and / or need to be able to easily relate to both main characters.
Due to the excellent writing and obvious care, I think anyone aware of the above considerations would (at the very least) find it a worthwhile read even if it's not their "cup of tea"....more
