Probably should read the first in the series before reading this one. Interesting characters & world building. I liked the first just a tad better. At times this one was a little confusing, but well worth the read especially if one likes space or vampires (though that part as very secondary in this story). I went back and forth between 3 and 4 stars. Ultimately I changed it to 4. Why? Well, I truly believe you can't hold quickies to the same expectations. This one was really short, but it packed a lot into it. Plus, I never felt lost or completely out of the loop, despite not having read the others from the series. There are flaws to be sure, which are even more glaring with a shorter length. But I bought an appetizer, I shouldn't expect a meal. Actual review is below.
Extreme quickie, but for its size decent world building. I have not read the previous stories. I could see how it would be beneficial but not necessary. If one is turned off of insta-love, especially outside of shifters, then this is not for you. I'm not a fan of the insta-love, but I'm not completely opposed out of hand either. Extreme situations can cause people to bond as well as sharing rare experiences. I'm not sure I buy HEA, but I'd buy HFN and helping each other continue to heal. I'm glad Cad was 2+ yrs out of rehab which makes him more likely to be able to sustain a real relationship. Dylan is great. It's nice to see Phoenix do some growing and realize how self absorbed he'd been. It was a nice story on finding hope and making changes when one is in an unhealthy situation....more

Not perfect, but definitely a cut above the rest especially for those who love vampire stories. I was a little confused by Santos and his behavior toward Adin in the hospital. The snark was great with hilarious gallows humor when it's either laugh or cry. The love story in the journal was both beautiful and heartbreaking. The characters were well developed including most of the minor ones. Definitely more plot than sex though plenty of that. I would have liked to have known more about the 3rd buyer that ended up with the Journal before it was retrieved. I liked how vampires were never really portrayed as completely tame and how Adin's faith disturbed D....more

I can't bring myself to give it a 3 or a 4. It was a very solid 3.5. There were things I loved that really set it apart from other books pushing up to a 4.5. There were things I hated which made it hard to connect to the characters or story. Both ends have things making it hard for me to be objective while reviewing / rating.
SOAP BOX TIME: I feel strongly ratings on sites like GoodReads, Amazon, ARE, ... should be as objective as possible. I shouldn't rate something a five if I can't tell you why, plus I find lots of flaws with it. I save those for my personal ratings. The reverse is also true. I feel I shouldn't rate something a 1 or even a 2 if I can't tell you why, and I didn't find flaws in the writing etc... The opinion part should come in the review not the rating IMHO. I read a very specific genre. I don't often read reviews before a book unless it's a new author, publisher, or I have concerns (Example; I typically don't like historicals. If I see one with high numbers of high ratings, then I read reviews to see if I think I might like it. A truly good story is a good story no matter what the genre.) What I personally find disheartening is seeing a low rating with a comment along the lines of "great writing etc... I just hate this______" (fill in the blank like m/m/m stories). I think that shouldn't effect ratings. The same is true for the reverse. The exception being if there are a lot of ratings already. This is one of the reasons, I've been diligently trying to back track through my books that were uploaded to GoodReads. Those were my personal ratings like what's now on my Kindle. Not ratings of the actual book/story itself. Some of my all time favorite books, I know have serious flaws. If I can't tell you why they deserve 5 stars then many I've rerated or at least explained why the 5 stars remain (life 5 stars for the hot sex alone). It's a slow process but worth it to me. So, this brings me back to this book.
I have no idea what to do with it. My obsessive side will probably make me rate it. I'm just glad it's got a lot of ratings, so mine won't matter. Plus, it's an older story which means probably no one will read this anyways ;o)...more

Though, I seem to be in the minority by looking at the ratings. The best part was it stuck with me. Not the title but the story. It's not as easy to find books you've read on GoodReads as Calibre. I have been periodically adjusting my ratings especially from my earlier books. I was thrilled to find the title, and quickly found it on my Kindle again. After a 1000+ m/m books, It gets harder and harder for a book to stick even stories I've loved at the time. I found the world building impressive and loved the unique take on shifters. I haven't actually read the other reviews yet. I don't usually, not wanting it to affect mine. If I had to take a guess, a lot of people probably had problems with the poly theme. Not my favorite thing, but not necessarily a problem when done well, even less so for cat shifters. There was definitely a pushing of the envelope which probably bothered others like rough sex after nearly being raped. But again, the m/c knew what he wanted and was never pressured. He was confident and powerful in his own right. The jaguar and the bear shifters were interesting. I loved all the unique personalities of the crew. I thought it a very interesting enjoyable read (both times)....more

If you want an original, interesting, read under the fantasy genre, then this should be a good read. The story lags mildly in some places, but otherwise it held my interest well. The world building was phenomenal. The stasis was terrifying. The Chief's youngest son had some painful growing up to do, and it was handled deftly by this author especially as he became more aware of the plight of slaves in society. I'm interested in seeing how the story progresses. The changes in Lark were heartbreaking as were the details of their mother's death....more

I kept finding my mind wandering to other things. The Andy thing just didn't seem as well developed as the rest, or it just didn't flow as well to me. I 1st read it around early 2010 way before I used GoodReads (much less used it with any regularity). I always used databases like Calibre, so my ratings were more for me and on my personal preferences. I uploaded just over a 1000 books using Calibre's export to GoodReads a few years ago. Lately I've been periodically trying to go back and either rerate books more objectively and/or reread books to see what I think now. Since about 2009, I've been strictly reading m/m (though I started reading m/m in early '08). A 1000+ m/m books makes those 5 star ratings much harder to come by than they used to be when it all seemed so "new and shiny". Another even more recent change is I actually have started trying to review too which is not easy for me. A wordsmith I am not. This is one of those stories I loved the first time around and just now reread. I think within the m/m genre that a majority of the stories are relationship intensive (especially those of the novella length or less) and thus usually heavy on the sex. This is where I feel many publishers and big book sellers like Amazon do buyers a disservice. The sellers that cater to the the romance buyer, like ARE or Ellora's, often have heat indexes. That way a buyer knows the emphasis on sex when buying. If I buy a 75 pg book with 5 flames, then basically I know I'm buying at best PWP (Porn with Plot). I can understand how a seller like Amazon, that sells literally everything, can't do that. So, it falls on the publisher to make those things clear in its description on both the length of the story and heat level. I often want stories heavy on the sex when reading m/m BUT not always, and not much makes a story more unsatisfactory than getting one type when in the mood for the other. I want to read a story with the heat level to match my mood. That way I'm not disappointed in a story over something it was never meant to be. I get so frustrated FOR reviewers (not at reviewers) that complain because of the level of sex in a book whether it be too much or too little since most m/m books fall under the romance genre. So... now to get off my soapbox. This book is still a favorite of mine, so personally it would still be a 5 star book. Though objectively, I can see flaws that don't make me comfortable rating it higher than 4 stars on GdRds. There is lots of hot sex. I love the world that includes dragons with werewolves and vampires etc... The family dynamics are interesting. I also liked the strange twist of them running a huge international conglomerate of funeral businesses as dragons. There are parts that feel contrived, but it's relatively well written and definitely hot....more

If poly is REALLY not your thing, then you might want to avoid. Three of them are in a very committed relationship. 2nd, if you haven't read the 1st book, I wouldn't read this one yet. It is the 2nd in a series about the same main characters. Its focus has not moved onto another relationship in the same world.
All the rest: There were some editing issues nothing too major for me, but I am typically a relatively laid back reader ;o) I loved the world the authors created. I would have liked a little more explanation on how a human can be changed; other than it can only be done by a hereditary shifter. That was an issue in the 1st book too. There were moments Sasha did seem TSTL (Too Stupid Too Live), which again was another issue some had with the 1st. Personally, I think he was just being a stupid male. One that was tired of being treated as weak. I have met plenty of those in "real life"; ones that think they are invincible. Definitely at times "eye roll" inducing, but not what I would consider a flaw in the book. There were some other minor issues, but overall it didn't interfere with my enjoyment of the book. It was a hot m/m/m story with both sex and adventure. There are some light BDSM themes. Nothing I feel would cause discomfort except for possibly those with the most opposed sensitivity. Taking in the above considerations, I think it's a nice bit of escapism especially for those who love shifter stories....more
