Selznick's unique back and forth of story told through text and story told through picture seems more cinematic than the traditional picture book or traditional novel. Similar to American Born Chinese, there are two story lines (Ben's and Rose's) that eventually intertwine near the end of the book. I love that the book is HUGE, but yet a manageable read for most of my intermediate and middle school students.
The main characters are both deaf; providing a unique perspective of the world--one that many students may not have personal experiences with. Both Rose and Ben go on an adventure of sorts to discover a world bigger than their own. They are brave and inquisitive. Rose is not held back by her disability, she is stronger than her parents think. Ben does not give up on his quest to discover his father and the payoff in the end was a joy to read.
Selznick is a genius and I look forward to many more of his beautiful and unique stories.(less)

He lives in foster care with Miss Edna and is separated from his little sister.
Locomotion opens up through the use of poetry (many forms), making this a good text to pair with a middle school poetry unit. The text could be paired with other texts that have similar themes, such as, alternative families, the power of writing (Love That Dog), tragic lose of parents, etc...
Great text for motivating young male readers. I could see using this in a book club setting or to teach character development.(less)
