The Blackhawks New 52 reboot sets them up as a secret government agency, along the lines of pre-New 52 Checkmate, which discreetly handles problems for the U.N. that the public JLI are too 'colorful' to take on. The characters were well developed and the plot rattled along, although a little too fast in the final issues but at least they had a chance to close off the ongoing Mother Machine story-arc. I hope we'll see the new Blackhawk's again at some point in the future.(less)

Bernice Summerfield on an actual archaeological expedition with an ancient mystery to solve. Something they haven't touched on for ages in the audios (with the exception of Tony Lee's Vesuvius Falling). The plot and characters were well thought out and the mystery itself was fun too. I hope the future Benny books continue in this vein. Much more characterization and meat on the bones of the story than Versimmon.(less)

They've kept Tim Drake's background and change into Red Robin as cannon (although with a needed age change) and the darker Red Robin works well in the context of a slightly uncontrollable team of heroes (who even refuse to call themselves a team). There are some great moments where Tim's level of manipulation and preparation really shine through. This storyline is woven into that of the new Superboy and is tight and interesting leading up to the crossover event, The Culling. Anything could happen in this new universe...(less)

Much money was spent but as Doctor Who and various other interests came to the fore (as they do every few months) sadly my reading of the Realms fell by the wayside. Determined to get back into it this weekend I got Emma to choose one pretty much at random for me and she chose Temple Hill as she liked the name :) I quite like the standalone books in the Realms series as although it’s nice to follow an ongoing narrative or ‘yearly plot’ sometime a fast paced adventure with a beginning a middle and an end fit the bill nicely. This tale by Karpyshyn does just that, it introduces a few heroes some good villains and feels just like a table top adventure should. There will most likely be more Forgotten Realms books appearing here over the coming months…
Where I got the book: It was in one of the random bundles of new Realms books I used to buy in lots off American people from eBay.(less)

It's all one big pretty tightly woven arc that leads up to the crossover event, The Culling. This new Superboy is slightly different to the pre New 52 universe, they've kept the bits that worked well. There are some mysteries too, we assume the donors of the DNA are the same as before but we're not sure and that's one of the main strengths of the New 52, what exactly will turn out differently...(less)

Rucka's run on Checkmate was brilliant and whilst this is, at face value, a much more fight instead of plot based comic there's loads of depth in S.H.A.D.E. As with most of the New 52 there's a little tweak to what we know with the inclusion of a not-yet-costumed-hero Ray Palmer but every one else was for me pretty much new anyways. The new Creature Commandos are intriguing and fit perfectly alongside Frankestein (there's a vampire, a werewolf, a mummy and a sea monster :) ) I hope the next volume carries on the cracking tales.(less)

It felt like a two parter from the original show. No written effect or description was out of place. The only thing that didn't feel quite right was the visible description of bullet wounds as the show would have looked away but this is necessary in prose. Can't wait for the next one (but I'll have to, it's not out till November)...(less)

It did feel a bit more like an extended audio as opposed to a normal Bernice book but that wasn't such a bad thing. Set firmly in Season 2 of the New Benny adventures (actually Season 13) it was a nice story. It did takes me two attempts to read it. Back when it came out Ruth was still relatively new a companion for Benny and it didn't really read right for me as they weren't close enough friends for the separation to mean as much but now, after ten audio adventures together it read superbly well. I really liked how Mycroft was handled in Bernice Summerfield and the Adventure of the Diogenes Damsel and Ms Wildthyme and Friends Investigate and thought at the time some solo adventures might work well. The author has done a pretty good job. The adventure fits within the original description of Mycroft's physical and mental nature. It's really short though, similar in length to a single case from one of the Holmes anthologies. Worth a read and there's loads in the series too if you like them.(less)

The end did seem to come round a bit abruptly but was a good conclusion to the story.(less)

This one features Rex Matheson on a case involving ex-Torchwood technology that fallen into the wrong hands. It was very well written as we know Rex hadn't heard of Torchwood until Episode 1 of Miracle Day he didn't find out about the organisation, he was just after the guys who had the tech. It contained a nice number of flashbacks setting the scene and the main plot was pacy and interesting too. It's a shame these books didn't get released in time for the UK release of Miracle Day as they really do fill the gap between it and Children of Earth. Now all we need is a director's cut of Miracle Day turning the first six episodes of none events into a fast and pacy movie.(less)

However, Jonathan Morris is quite frankly brilliant, and I need not have worried. He's created a good storyline using the Angels and even manages to touch on a few things that really bugged me about the current series of Who (like why the Blinovitch Limitation Effect didn't affect Kazran Sardick). Also has a few sad moments too which really balance the book. Really well done. (less)

Whilst this book started well, using first person entries to tell the story it became increasingly daft, especially once the action started, that we were meant to think each of the principles (one in particular) had time to sit down and write a diary entry between acts. The ending came very suddenly as there's quite a long epilogue (there was a big chunk of book left so I was surprised when it happened). Whilst this can be a good thing the actual way the bad guy was eventually defeated was a bit rubbish. Goss has written much better books. Also, sadly for him, parts of his plot ended up in an episode in the current series which always makes the books seem a bit less authentic.(less)

I think Andrew Lane has done a grand job of bringing us a young version of Sherlock Holmes. There's many nods in there to Sherlock Holmes older selfs interests but they are not paraded around and forced down your throat. The initial reveal of the villain I thought was abit silly but the book is aimed for people considerably younger than me :) I'm looking forward to reading the rest in this series.(less)

I love books set in the realms but haven't read many post-Spellplague yet as I'm still catching up on the many events pre-Spellplague that redefine Faerun. Parts of this book were brilliant, such as the combat sequnces, de Bie really has got them nailed. But the rest of the book I found a bit lacking. The plot was okay but nothing special and the ending was a bit expected. I am going to read the next novel featuring the same characters to see what happens next though :)(less)

If you like stories with Sherlock in them, and aren't too much of an 'original Holmes only' person there's loads to enjoy in this collection. The introduction is really good too (and you can read just that bit with the Kindle preview). There's two more volumes that I'm looking forward to as well. A great holiday read.(less)

They have been the major villain in the last few TNG books and I think they've been over done. Perhaps if I'd read these novels as they came out the time gap between each one would have made the impact different. I thought this one would put the Borg to bed but the Epilogue suggests otherwise. The new crew were really well fleshed out. It finally feels like they've got a proper crew again after the conflicts in the previous books.
I'm going to reads the Titan books 2-6 next which will bring me up to date with the start of the entire TNG/DS9/VOY series to move onwards into Destiny and Typhon Pact. Hopefully each Titan book will have a bit more variety than the last x TNG books... (less)
