Turin's sister Nienor also figures into the story. The tail was begun by Tolkien before the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings stories; he attempted to revise them later, but never finished. The author creates his own world, somewhat like Tolkien.
The ending is quite an unexpected shock for those who expect a happy ending. Keep in mind that the author is taking you on an unfinished adventure which will continue in later editions of the series.
