I worked through it slowly, and made it through because I minored in math in college. Frenkel introduces lots of amazing concepts and effectively describes how the concepts support one another. His passion for math is inspiring, especially when describing the ways that math reveals universal truths (and truths about the universe). He presents the insights of modern mathematics so that they take on an almost spiritual significance.

I recommend this book for those with some basis in calculus, however long ago it may be, and those who want to get a sense of current cutting-edge mathematical research. I also think that people who focus on applied math (like engineers) might appreciate this book's argument for the value of pure math.
