And, just when you think you know where the story is going…it goes down a totally different path. We find out more about Trey right off the bat, and I totally didn’t see that coming. Jury is still out on him, though I think he may have just as many, albeit different, issues than Weldon.
When we left Jake, he was not in good shape, to put it mildly. The story picks up as Jake is taken to the “company” doctor for fixing. While it first appeared there was nothing but more torture in store for poor Jake, things change direction a bit. I won’t say more so as to not give away any of the “fun” twists.
This segment was a little bit different than the first in that there were small jumps in time; we didn’t get to see any in-depth activities at the hands of Weldon and his goons, but that’s probably a good thing. What we did get was more character development and plot twisting where people you thought were bad might not be so bad, and those you thought were good or were pinning your hopes on, might not be the safest bet after all.
Time will tell, and I’m super excited to see what Mr. Kol comes up with next, as I’m sure he won’t let us off that easily, and it’s a pretty strong bet that he has a few things up his sleeve for the next installment....more

Aside from the extraordinarily literal instalove, there were quite a few inconsistencies throughout that kept pulling me from the story as well. It had potential but sorely needed another round of edits or beta reads. :(

Ha! This story starts out differently than I had expected. It starts out showing us Jake, a bruised up 19 year old out at a party where he meets a much older Trey who saves him from overdosing. Though he is definitely attracted, there is clearly more going on with Jake, so Trey plays it safe and simply takes care of Jake for the evening.
It is when Jake returns home that we quickly see the extent of the problems he is facing. Unfortunately, things escalate very fast and Jake finds himself in a world of hurt it doesn’t seem he will ever be able to escape. When Weldon makes his appearance, in true Kol fashion, it is made very clear that Weldon has some major plans for Jake.
This installment is only the beginning of what promises to be everything the tags warn about and more. It is just a taste of what’s to come, and I was on the edge of my seat throughout. My heart is breaking more and more for poor Jake. Will Trey somehow end up being his savior? Will there be anything left to save? And if so, what kind of shape will he be in? Is Jake’s younger brother, Colton, destined for the same in a few years? So many questions, and I can’t wait to get to the bottom of it all.
Taboo, Book One is a very short, jam-packed exciting read. If you’re a fan of Kol’s writing, which is 99% dark and depraved, you will undoubtedly enjoy this one. It is well-written and more of everything for which he is known. If this is up your alley, be sure not to pass this one by. I’m already jonesing for the next installment!...more

Carter is an escort trying to make enough to cover his final year of college tuition. He doesn’t like it, but it seems his only option to make enough money. Unfortunately, he works for a pimp who sets him up with a questionable and shady character, an older man who is rough and dangerous. Before things get too out of control, things are taken out of his hands by Antony, the hitman who takes out Carter’s client right before his eyes.
Antony sees something in Carter, something he knows too well from his own childhood. He is somewhat stuck in the hitman position, and while he has tried to distance himself, is pulled back in to handle more jobs. He can’t get his encounter with Carter out of his head and decides to pursue him, but the underlying issues of his job continue to get in the way.
This grabbed me right away. There’s a lot more to the background of Antony, where he came from and how he came to be the Hitman that gave him a bit more depth than first appears. He and Carter were exciting and made a great couple when everything else wasn’t getting in the way. But persistence pays off in the end and there is a happy ending when all is said and done.
This was a quick read, and my only real niggle was the frequent use of the titles, the “Hitman,” etc. While it worked in some instances, there seemed to be others where it felt unnecessary and pulled me from the story. Aside from that, this was a fast-paced, exciting and sexy read that definitely keeps Kelex on my to read shelf....more

Zack has worked hard to get where he is. He works best alone and has been through numerous assistants due to his gruff demeanor and anger management issues. That all changes when Nolan appears.
Nolan had his life turned upside down when a car accident left him lucky to be alive. It has taken two years of recovery to get to the point where he feels he is able to interview for a job, albeit not in his chosen field, which he is no longer able to do due to his anxiety and PTSD issues. He soon finds out tackling the interview was the easy part. But, as damaged as he feels he is, he has great strength in dealing with the difficult Zach, and in doing so, starts to see beneath the many layers to a man who cares a great deal about many things.
There are definitely some bumps in the road as these guys navigate their working relationship and general attraction toward one another. Zach is working with the goal of being able to renovate and reopen the boxing gym he purchased. This is the basis for the series, although it is only in its beginning stages. The gym played an important role in Zach’s (and his bff, Max) childhood as a safe place for LGBTQ youth and a means for Zach to handle his anger issues.
I really enjoyed this story. We aren’t given too much information about Zach’s past, we definitely get to learn about the man himself. It is easy to see Nolan’s effect on Zach, and the two have great chemistry. Zach is able to calm Nolan with his anxiety, and Nolan manages to organize and bring a calmness to Zach’s hectic life. There were some really cute moments and definitely some sexy ones as well. This was a solid foundation for what looks to be a very enjoyable series. I believe Max’ story is next, and I can’t wait to see what’s in story for him! ...more
