The ring is destroyed almost in the middle of the book and even though we get some interesting facts that I am happy I got after its destruction, like what happened to Saruman once he was overthrown in Isengard, the rest of the story is still too long and it takes some effort not to lose interest. The final chapters still adds value, so it definitely has it's place - just shorter would have been nicer. Still, Tolkien has a writing style that I find appealing and 'brainy' enough not to make me feel that I'm reading a kiddies book e.g. Chronicles of Narnia was a book that I simply could not force myself to read. (not that it would by any means be okay to compare these books or writers) I really enjoyed the book and would add it to my list of favorites and obviously the movie would also be classified as a favorite. Obviously better than the movie considering all the detail given that you won't see on screen. I watched the movies ages ago and could not remember all the nitty-gritty detail, and the book was more than just a refresher. The thought that went into this and the writing style... everything about this book is great. I know that a lot of facts and a lot of theories are used as the foundation for the story, but the way that the writer puts it all together and actually writes about the characters and the journey they take is near flawless. He takes things into account that would normally cause the story to feel stretched, but this artist truly makes the masterpiece. Attention bien méritée pour un livre brillant. I can't wait to start reading Angels and Demons next and hope that I am as riveted as I was reading this book!(less)

I did not think this book would be this good (no logical reason for me to think this) but once I started I simply could not stop. As usual I also predicted what would happen next but this time the author really managed to catch me off guard, so if you are one of those readers that love a twist this book will meet your needs. "Good writing style and easy to read but still deep and a very mature demeanor" is the easiest way I can describe this book and definitely recommended to friends. (less)

It is truly amazing to see how all her characters go through the toughest times or sometimes find themselves in the funniest situations. The best being when both emotions happen in the same scene! The story line is once again done brilliantly, from start to finish. Her books have become synonymous 'glued to the hands with butt on the seat' gut wrenching, tear jerking (because of the funny bits) and riveting brilliance. The story of Rachel is a tale that one can identify with, even if you don't use drugs or drink excessively; this based on the ignorance and stupidity that most of us experience at some point in our lives, and silly as it might sound this book was also in a sense motivational. I don't personally have the same exact issues as Rachel, but we all have our little addictions that most of us don't even know about or choose not to admit. The book really gets the veil lifted even if for just short intervals and because on some level one identifies with the characters, you feel the emotion so much more. For anyone that says this book did nothing for them, my response to them would be that, in my opinion, you are just more in denial than the rest of us! This is a MUST read!(less)

Dean Koontz uses a VERY fair share of humor to lighten the mood of the reader in this book. This is not what I typically consider a Dean Koontz book, but I found myself pleasantly surprised. The main character is a 'simple' guy called Odd and covers the strange story that leads to the emotional 'twisty' end, and also fills a lot of the gaps about the character's life during the telling of this tale. The superior writing style of this top author is still very prominent throughout the book and in fact, I think I like him even more than I did before! The situation is riveting and kept me reading until the early hours of the morning and I still found myself laughing out loud at some of the creative situations Odd finds himself in as well as the things he says and jokes he makes. Oddly enough (no pun intended) he is the kind of guy I would like to have as a buddy even if just for the entertainment he provides. I still experienced emotion and felt sorry for him at parts of the book - totally captured in the reading frenzy called Odd Thomas! Should you not like terror and horror type books, I would strongly suggest you try this one due to its uniqueness and you would not be disappointed.(less)

Just had to read the rest.
I hope that John is going to release another book in this serious - it feels unfinished....
Very funny once again and I appreciate the say that the writer jokes around in a clever enough way that I don't feel like I'm being spoon fed the funny bits. I can imagine that some people might not catch all the 'nested' jokes though, but it keeps the book real and it makes the funny bits truly funny and not forced as was my impression of the first book during the first two chapters; not sure if he just got better at writing this as he made progress.
Overall, a very nice job!! Very entertaining.(less)

Because of this I initially thought it sucked - John was 'trying' to be funny and this was off-putting at first.
As I continued reading the book, I actually found myself laughing out loud and i eventually couldn't put the book down. I really really enjoyed it a lot and found it had good balance of real life issues and John had this way to make it funny. Not dry humor but more a what the F@#$ kinda concept.
The ending was a bit disappointing, but other than that I am really looking forward to the next book!(less)

From the start I had the feeling that this was going to be one of those books where the writer attempts to be funny throughout and I was worried about the merit of the story line. However; after the first chapter I was already hooked! I simply could not put the book down, to such an extent that at times I completely lost track of time. The brilliance in this book is in the vast spectrum of emotions the writer touches with the story - excellent balance of happy and sad, but put in such a way that the reader can't help but 'live' themselves into the possible scenarios that the main character goes through. If you have read the summary on the back cover of the book and you think you know what the book is about, you will change your mind once you get past the first few chapters. It is amazing to think how I was giggling like a little girl at times and in the very next chapter, dropped down an abyss of heartbreaking sadness to be pulled back by the superb use of tension breaking sections. The emails referenced in the book kept me sane in a sense. This balance is where a nerve is truly touched and it is more often than not this understanding, detail and story telling genius that gives power to a writer like Marian over her audience. I am now truly a fan and understand what everyone was raving about. This is a 'have to read'!!(less)

I am completely bowled over by the magical way that Marian gets the reader to love the characters; finding oneself on the edge on one's seat, rooting for someone. I simply can't put down the damn books! The start was a bit slow and initially I was worried that this book is not going to be as good as the previous one, but quickly found myself caught up with the characters and drowning on the emotional roller coaster. I found the emails the character sends a bit irritating at first and luckily it did not continue throughout the book, and the justification for these emails later in the book makes sense. Thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait to start my next Marian Keyes novel!(less)
