I picked it up when I lived in Montana, along with several other, similar, books about women in the west, including "High-Spirited Women of the West," also by Anne Seagraves. Both books were published by Wesanne Publications. I found this book to be interesting, loved the old photographs. It's been a keeper on my research shelf.
Rather than dry, scholarly recitation, I thought each of the stories surrounding specific women felt personal and the writing captured the essence of the hard times for women of this era, especially in the west.
I've had the occasion to visit Virginia City, where Julia Bulette lived and died--or rather was murdered. Have also had the occasion to visit the site of what is now a ghost town in Montana, a mining town by the name of Gilt Edge, in the mountains outside of Lewistown. The remains of two buildings still stood at the time I visited - the jail and the house of ill repute. It's said the rather infamous Calamity Jane once stayed in Gilt Edge. Both these women are portrayed in "Soiled Doves." History always means just that little bit more, I think, when one has an opportunity to visit a place where these people walked.
This book is a good overview of the times and conditions under which these women had to survive and it is written in an engaging and informative manner.(less)

I've not yet read the first book, but didn't feel I was missing anything by reading this book first. I do want to go back and read Thorne and Martine's story, as well as others related to this series. Patricia Ryan has a very engaging style and a voice I thoroughly enjoy. A well-paced, sensual, historical romance with some very suspenseful conflict and well-rounded context.
Heaven's Fire is an historical romance that I truly enjoyed. Well-grounded in the medieval age and the beginnings of the scholarly world of Oxford, England, as well as encompassing the art of book illumination of that period, I enjoyed the historical aspects of the story. A sensual read, deeply romantic, with strong characterizations--a virile, strong hero, a feisty, engaging heroine, and a very nasty villain...or two.
Constance, a rather gifted young woman for her station, was married to an old man for her protection against a lecherous knight; soon widowed, out of desperation she becomes the housekeeper/mistress of another old man, the local priest, again for her protection against the odious Sir Roger. Although never having enjoyed an exactly loving relationship with either man, she's pragmatic and does not wilt at doing what it takes to survive. Father Osred dies of plague, and Rainulf of Rouen, also known as Rainulf Fairfax, a Doctor of Logic and Theology at Oxford, first comes upon Constance as she's digging a grave--make that two. Father Osred's and her own. Rainulf, an ordained priest, but soon to become an ex-priest for a number of reasons, has come to perform last rights to Father Osred. He is a well-respected teacher at Oxford, a returned warrior from the Holy Lands, not without his own inner demons riding him. Rainulf has remained celibate for eleven years, with no plans to change that state. Constance is determined to become independent, relying on no man to secure her future. Well, we know the saying about the best-laid plans now don't we?
Rainulf is a sleeping beauty about to be shocked awake by the determined, passionate Constance, who challenges him on many levels. Rainulf remains in Cuxham long enough to nurse Constance back from near-death. When next they meet in Oxford, Constance is now disguised as a young man going by the name of Corliss, albeit an enchanting one, looking for work as an illuminator at the local book shops of Oxford, still in hiding from Sir Roger. And thus Rainulf and Corliss are thrust into the hub of Oxford politics and unrest, and Corliss hides almost in plain site from a dangerous predator on the hunt for a woman named Constance.

With an engaging voice, and some tongue-in-cheek humor, Mr. Cawthorne takes us quickly from Augustus to Justinian with numerous jaw-dropping snapshots of debased history. Separating much of the sex and violence, and skimming quickly over politics, war, and daily life, "Sex Lives of the Roman Emperors" is an interesting read which makes one curious to inquire further into the more broadly-focused biographies and histories of the Roman Empire. Obviously, there has to be more to these rulers than what is colorfully portrayed in Mr. Cawthorne's book. One would hope.
At the end of the book is a "Selected Bibliography," as well as a chronological list of the Roman emperors which would help in further inquiry.
I found this book to be an interesting and rather surprising read, much like the curiosity when voyeurs stop at the scene of a terrible accident, and a bit different from the usual nonfiction book. If you squick at reading about the practices of insane rulers, debased sex, and bloody violence, probably not the read for you.(less)

This story starts out with a bang and doesn’t stop. The sexual ride is quite intoxicating and explicitly naughty. Melanie is determined to get the best trainer and she is willing to do what she must. She is a combination of propriety and sensuality; the opposites make her character quite appealing. On one side she shows a façade to the world but on the inside she is a sexual tigress. Though Miguel shows outward control, Rico is an integral part of the interview. Rico’s character shows a depth that intrigued this reader, I was eager to turn the page and read more about him. Ms. Dane, yet again, doesn’t disappoint. She is talented at writing a sexually charged, edgy story."--Dawnie, Fallen Angel Reviews (less)

The relationships built on the dynamics of domination and submission are intriguing. I am always interested in the psychological aspects and mindset in any situation and was not disappointed by this book. The core elements of dominance and submission exist at varying levels in all relationships. Sometimes on a scale that moves from very subtle to the extreme of master/slave, sometimes temporary, sometimes long term. To explore the deeper elements of the dominant/submissive relationship, including the erotic element of the Master/slave dynamic, Jack Rinella's book is a worthy introduction. Within the text are a number references to other source materials, articles, and books which would bear checking out in order to explore this type of erotic dominance relationship more fully.(less)
