In the previous volume, Soma Yukihira continued completing the trials and tribulations of the Totsuki Friendship and Rapport Training Camp, better known as the "Training Camp from Hell." This event is currently Soma's biggest test to date because from what is known about previous camps in past years, a huge chunk of students are ususally expelled at this one event. At this moment, Soma is in the midst of the Breakfast Buffet-Style challenge, one in which he finds himself at the door of expulsion.
The volume is divided up into nine chapters, from Chapter 31 to 39. The four chapters cover the conclusion of both the Breakfast Buffet-Style Challenge using eggs as the primary ingredient and the Totsuki Friendship and Rapport Training Camp. As for the remaining chapters except for the last, they cover the Sensual Karaage Arc. The last chapter is a filler chapter which concentrates on the Polar Star Dormitory's ping pong challenge. _________________________
Chapters 31 to 34
These chapters cover two major conclusions. The first is the Breakfast Challenge in which the First Year Class had to create a dish up to Totsuki Culinary Academy standards with the mandatory criteria of serving it buffet style, serving 200 dishes, and utilizing one key ingredient: eggs. At the end of the fourth volume, we find out that Soma Yukihira is way behind in the number of dishes served. Soma chose to create a dish, a souffle omelette, with a poor stand-alone life. Anything with a souffle characteristic needs to be served quickly or else it will decompress. Ergo, all of Soma's souffle omelettes were useless after mere minutes. With only 30 minutes left in the challenge, Soma reorganizes and becomes the "dancing chef." Instead of serving food at-the-ready, he made it to order. By doing such, he gained a gathering for "putting on a show." As word spread about how good his souffle omelette was, he was able to concentrate on the task in which he served 200 plates just under time.
The Breakfast Challenge was a trying task, but it was the last as Soma Yukihira, Megumi Tadokoro, Erina Nakiri, and the rest of the First Year Class who survived so far (which includes all the First Years at Polar Star Dormitory), were treated to a fantastic meal by the Totsuki Culinary Academy alumni as a way to say they all passed the training. On the day of departure, circumstances happen in which Soma and Erina miss their bus to get back to the academy. While sharing a vehicle taking them home, we learn something about Nakiri: the man who's she admires the most is Joichiro Yukihira, Soma's father.
Chapters 35 to 38
These chapters encompass the Karaage Wars Arc. It is now vacation time for Totsuki Culinary Acadamy and students are either staying in their dorms or heading back home to their families. Soma Yukihira heads back to his home town to air out the Yukihira Restaurant. Upon arrival, he finds out the Sumiredori Shopping District, the area his family restaurant is located, is empty and that many businesses are on the brink of closing. He soon learns through his childhood friend Mayumi Kurase that Mozuya, a chicken karaage store in the train station, has taken all the business away.
After doing a stakeout on Mozuya, Soma Yukihira comes to the thought that to gain the business back to the Sumiredori Shopping District is to create their own version of chicken karaage to compete against Mozuya. Given the fact she is the "Queen of Meat," Soma asks for Ikumi Mito's assistance, much to the latter's delight (because she has a massive crush on Soma). Along with Mayumi Kurase, they come up with a chicken karaage that doesn't exactly beats Mozuya's karaage, but instead utilizes the wants and needs of the people who pass the Sumiredori Shopping District as well as utilizing the services of other stores in the district to help bring the new product to life. In the end, the store district survives with their new karaage recipe, but also introduces new enemies.
This is nothing more than a filler chapter as it showcases the rivalry between Megumi Tadokoro and Satoshi Isshiki in ping-pong, in which the former wins their match at the time. Apparently, if Megumi did not pursue cooking, she would have become a professional ping-pong player. _________________________
All in all, the fifth volume is a good read as it continues the overall story of Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma. Thankfully, the stories are still fresh, not utilizing past stories or anything like that. To be frank though, the series is still fairly new....more
