When I started reading this one it sort of reminded me of a really long game of madlibs and I found myself wondering if someone didn't just write down a bunch of drunken ramblings. It kind of settled though I guess. Oh...and I have always hated Peter Pan (the character not the story) so yay for one consistency?(less)

Absolutely loved Danny Marble and the Application for Non-Scary Things even before I started reading it because it has such a great title! The book didn't disappoint either (although I admit I kind of expected something far less sophisticated than what I got!)Will definitely pass this one off to my kidlets. If they're good and promise to look after the ipad nicely while they read it ;)(less)

It does however form part of a whole bunch of books that I did love so I will forgive it for not being my favourite :) (less)

Yes I admit that it's not the most brilliantly written book and neither is it emotionally poignant, but The Palace of Laughter is a great story and I would recommend it to anyone looking for something to tickle their "As sweet" fantasy. If you're like me and you prefer you YA fiction minus all the annoying teen angst then I reckon Jon Berkeley is an author to look out for. It might also help to keep him in mind when you're looking for something to replace those pesky Harry Potter novels that your kids have finished reading. Cute story. Cute setting. Cute characters. That's enough for me :)(less)

My mom has been trying to get me to read Agatha Christie novels for years and after deciding to do a "1001 Books to Read Before you Die" marathon I thought it was about time to take up her recommendation.
As you can tell by the 5 star rating I absolutely loved it. It was kind of funny though because as I was reading it and not getting the usual "feeling" for who the murderer I thought to myself "Wouldn't it be cool to write a book where the narrator turns out to be the killer"....well well well! I was devastated to find out that my very "original" idea was not so original at all. (Really....I yelled at my mom a lot...and she just laughed and laughed of course...because that is what we do....we yell at each other about things that boggle our brains).
Very much looking forward to picking up a few more of Ms. Christie's works. She is clearly skilled and her sense of humour shines through the pages. I love it! (less)

I still reckon GR needs to allow for half ratings because I would have given this one a 2.5 rather than a 3 but it wasn't written badly and I did manage to get to the end so a 2 is too extreme. I'm not sure why I didn't like this one. Maybe I just don't dig sports so the NASCAR backdrop was a bit blegh...except it wasn't. No. That wasn't it. There was a weird staccato style to the writing in this book which almost came across as a little mocking...almost like "Dude, I'm so over this writing thing I'm just gonna fuck around now." I've already felt a little frustrated with KR books because of the lack of progress in the personal lives of the characters. Each book kind of pretends it's going to go somewhere and then never does. I'm one of those readers who needs the personal stuff...it's why I hate CSI but love Criminal Minds, The Mentalist, Castle etc....those shows at least give you a taste of back story/side story from time to time. It's my gravy. I need the gravy. I am quite aware that this review is terribly uninformative.... *sigh*(less)

It's very seldom that I get to the end of a suspense/thriller and go "O-oh...cool!" - it's usually more of a case o "oh damn I KNEW it was gonna turn out to be that guy!" And of course Karin Slaughter has written my top two fictional boy crushes - Jeffrey Tolliver and Will Trent - so I have to give her major kudos for that. Is the next one out yet? (less)

I must admit that I found this book to drag a bit though and the topic of drug abuse tends to annoy me more than fascinate me so I struggled with that. Luckily the last quarter of the book kind of made up for all the "ho-hum" I felt through the rest of it and it was definitely worth a read in the end. (less)

How dork-ass fan-ish is that? Meh. I've read a couple of reviews about this book and it seems to be one of those you-either-love-it-or-hate-it books. Or should I be saying that about Sarah Colonna herself? I think it takes a big bite of "special" to be this kind of honest. I think it's pretty damn fantastic to say "this is how it is" and be telling the truth. You can feel it, hear it as the words wash over you. Hearing that honesty in writing is my absolute favourite thing about reading. That "I believe you" feeling that washes over me is my cocaine. It is my reason for writing. And it is my reason for above all else, striving for honesty in the things that I write. I write so that when you read it, you will believe me. Even the most far fetched of stories can hold the most precious nugget of truth.
I don't know who Sarah Colonna is. My sister is a huge fan, but I don't have a clue who she is. Also, I don't usually read non-fiction. Memoirs and biographies don't really do it for me. I like play-play people in play-play worlds. But I'm glad I picked this up. I'm not sure why (apart from the fact that it's funny and I enjoyed reading it). Something about it just feels hopeful. Or made me feel hopeful. I dunno.
Whatever it is....I think it would be pretty damn cool to go out for drinks with this chick :)(less)

This has started happening often and I worry for the state of my brain. Clearly it has lost the ability to retain information. Otherwise, just another typical Mary Higgins Clark novel. Crime fiction is my go-to indulgence genre even though it never actually makes me go "wow fantastic!" I just like the mystery I guess. Anyway...worth a read if you're already a fan but there are far better ones out there (On the Street Where You Live is a personal fave). Just don't be stupid like me and read half the book in one sitting and then only read the next half two weeks later. MHC has a bit of an MO when it comes to her writing and it usually includes introducing the killer somewhere in the beginning and paying very little attention to him. So if you're all mud brained like me then by the time they go "so and so did it!!" you're all "Who the fuck is so and so?"...(less)

Only Roald Dahl can get away with saying "pis" and "krap" in a children's book and do it with such class! I never actually knew this little book existed until I borrowed it from a friend (and then put it away in my computer bag where it stayed for three years until I discovered it last week).
According to the introduction by Quentin Blake this book was written specifically for the London Dyslexia Institute. Another case of "Flip Roald Dahl is so damn awesome!"(less)

I think it's a good way to show off writing styles and I must to admit that I pick up the skinnier books first these days purely because of time limits and because if the book is long you can be pretty sure that I will ignore everything else and read the book until it is finished which is never a good plan.
Anyway, Consumed by Love is a love story that I do not remotely relate to because - let's face it - I don't believe in unconditional love even a little bit. But - it is a lovely thought so we make room for it in the written world because otherwise life is too depressing.
I accepted this book for review because I could not pass up the opportunity to read something in the "Erotic Horror" genre. Horizon broadening and all that. Well...I don't know if we can really call it erotic but it was gloriously horrible :)
All in all I enjoyed this little piece of well rounded fiction and definitely recommend it to anyone who can only manage to squeeze in an hour of reading here and there :)(less)

I love the illustrations too and I must admit that I often buy books just because I think the illustrations are pretty. I have now started downloading children's books onto my ipad because I am hoping that my son might prefer them to real books. Sadly I can't get the kid to show any interest in the gorgeous books in his bedroom! But maybe he'll like them if he can turn the pages by swiping his finger over the touch screen! (less)
