However, these behaviors are monolithic in thei...more Delightful stories of various civilizations having characteristics similar to ours or that of animals. However, these behaviors are monolithic in their societies & seem novel to ours even though we share some of the characteristics of each of theirs, e.g. the Veksi are rigid monotheists and their god is one of destruction "existence is a rebellion against law ... life defiance against inevitable doom.

Some of the stories seem to be minor exercises in prose fantasy but each is capable of exploiting some odd quirk in social behavior by which we can compare human behavior and extract some wisdom from the story. For example a whole race that shares dreams socially and some, who are considered to be poets, share dreams with mountains and trees; what a novel concept! In The Fliers of Gy examines the emotional impact on beings that in early adulthood can for unknown reasons develop the physical ability to fly.

The Island of the Immortals has an odd tone to it; more than the other stories. Le Guin builds up the intensity of mystery through partial descriptions given by imaginary authors that only deepen the mystery rather than clarify it. The resolution of one oddity merely leads to the uncovering others.

The technical aspects of language were explored in a couple of stories and postulate new ways of perceiving reality. They are thought provoking but I suspect that the plausibility of the linguistic explanations may not stand up to educated scrutiny.

I enjoyed these stories much more than I did the Lathe of Heaven but one can sense a similar strain of imagining the possibility of different realities.
