I was annoyed by the dated Leave It To Beaver/Andy Griffith Show dialog as well. Most of it came from Candy. I think the author was trying to portray her as a ditzy airhead, but I've known plenty of them… they've never EVER spoken like that. When Rye started talking like that, I was done. DNF at 34%....more
For the most part I found this book to be enjoyable. More so in the first 30%, then it kind of just fizzles. My issues are mainly in the fact that it seemed to fall in a rut in the middle. Or more like a merry-go-round. Kevin and Nikki kept rehashing the same problems over and over with no progression/resolution. Especially Kevin. Honestly, it was annoying at times. By the time things started coming together again, the story was done. Very anticlimactic. I still <3 Carly Phillips though!...more

Quite the tear-jerker! I can't even begin to count all the times I got teary-eyed while reading this book. It was a very good story. It pulled me in instantly. I loved the characters. Although, it did take me longer to warm up to Gaston than it did Celine. The side characters were just as interesting as well. The love story was insanely good in my opinion. I'd kill for a man that loved me as much as Gaston loved Celine. Why yes, I am envious of a fictional character!
My only issue with this book is, it's so long. At times, I was bored. Mainly in the middle. A lot of the scenes could have been omitted or condensed. Especially in the first 50%, where the H/h are constantly bickering over her identity. Generally, long and rambly books drive me batty, as this one did a couple of times. But overall, I enjoyed this book. The end was the redeeming factor though, as I was set to give a lower rating. I'd recommend it to fans of time-travel romances or romances that take place in medieval times....more

I started skimming at 5% in the hopes I would eventually stumble upon a story, but even that wasn't enough. DNF'ing at 10%. I just cannot get into this book. There's so many pages of useless info and descriptions. The way these people talk is over-the-top pretentious. So far, everything is told from the heroine's pov. I'm not a fan of one-sided stories in my romances. That's almost as bad as first person pov.
There were several other problems I had, but ultimately, all the descriptions of useless crap had my eyes glazing over and mind wandering. I was bored to tears. I couldn't justify even skimming any longer with so many more books waiting to be read. Especially when trying to reach my goal for the Goodreads challenge....more
This was my least favorite in the series so far, but I**spoiler alert** Protagonist: 8/10 Secondary Characters: 10/10 Mystery: 8/10 Humor: 9/10 Pace: 9/10
This was my least favorite in the series so far, but I still very much enjoyed the book. Violet's jealousy streak was pretty annoying, and I'm disappointed that she still couldn't tell Natalie about her and Doc. It was selfish of her to want her cake and eat it to. I'm glad Nat finally caught on… at the end. Sooner would have been better. Those were my two biggest issues with the book. I look forward to crawling into the next installment though and devouring that one as well. I love this series!...more
This was a really good story. But, I struggled with rating it becauseHero: 3/5 Heroine: 3/5 Romance: 4/5 Fun: 3/5 Pace: 2/5 Side Characters: 4/5
This was a really good story. But, I struggled with rating it because, throughout the book, my feelings fluctuated. I liked the characters and whatnot well enough, but ultimately the pacing was too inconsistent for me. At times I lost interest so much I thought I might DNF it. It felt like the tale was dragged out to within an inch of it's life. The beginning was excellent and I just wish it could have maintained that momentum for the whole story.
I also thought the end was a bit abrupt and unfinished. Overall though, I enjoyed reading the book a lot. I'm pretty sure I'm in a reading slump still and that that trickled in and clouded my feelings on the story. I would still happily recommend this book to fans of well-written historical romances. ...more
Okay, I know I said I wouldn't gush over this book… but I seriously can't help it. I love this story/town/characters/writing/etc. Everything about this book had me on cloud 9. I am so happy I found this series, and a new author to call my favorite. I read this 2nd installment in the Deadwood series in record time (granted I had it on loan from a friend for 2 weeks, but still~)! That alone validates how much I loved this book! Speaking of having it on loan, I actually was in love with the story so much that by page 200 I had already purchased my own copy. When I catch up on the series, I'll purchase the books again in paperback to put on my keeper shelf. *Gushgushgush*
BUT, as much as I loved this book, there were a couple things that bothered me. The length of course, but I'm starting to get over that. Also, Violet seemed to have a shallow edge to her. I didn't notice it in the first book, but I did in this one. Kind of disappointing. And my biggest beef is with the lack of condoms. I hate that in books and normally take off some major points for the irresponsibility. Luckily my love for this book far outweighs the negative points and only results in a half star being knocked off.
Overall, this is truly a fun, laugh out loud, epically awesome book to read. I put off things to completely throw myself into the story, and have absolutely no regrets in doing so. Who needs sleep anyway?! Sleep is over-rated in the face of a really good book! :3 If you like cozy mysteries with strong romance elements, humor, and a touch of horror and suspense, then you will more than likely enjoy the first 2 books in the Deadwood series as much as I have. (I can't comment on the others… yet). Happy reading, ya'll!...more

A nice, quick, cozy mystery with a light romance tossed in. Overall, I liked it. The mystery kept me guessing right up to the end. The romance was a nice touch. Actually, the romance was my favorite parts of the book. I absolutely lusted after Villari. Ahem… anyway, the writing was good and kept me turning the pages. But there were times when the pace was sluggish for me.
I also didn't really care for Maggie. Her sarcasm in the beginning of the story in the face of her, supposed, friends murder was tacky and disrespectful. You have to be one cold-hearted b!tch to make fun of a murdered woman you claimed to care for like a mother the day after she turns up dead on your property. That tainted her image for me for the remainder of the book. Only reason I kept reading was because of Villari. I doubt I'll read the rest of the series....more
