It is filled with ironies and wit which captivate and I found the characters quite engaging and more complex than I thought I would. In fact it reminds me quite a lot of that other masterpiece 'Catch 22'. This is definitely a novel that can stand on its own in the world of literature and I think it can be taken more seriously and does not merely fall into a light-hearted category.
I would highly recommend this to anyone and everyone....more

What on earth am I supposed to read after this?!?!
I thought that it was going to take me weeks to finish this novel, but instead I got completely immersed in it and devoured it in just about two days. Once again I am reminded why Eco is one of my favourite authors and why he is surely at the top of literary figures to take note of.
This novel is a philosophy. It is an exploration of faith, of beliefs, of love and hate, friendship and loyalty, of journeys to be taken and those you never finish. It explores history, but also puts that delectable postmodern twist on it when the narrator, himself, claims that nothing he says is the truth. But then, in Eco’s own words: “Yes, I know, it’s not the truth, but in a great history little truths can be altered so that the greater truth emerges.” This novel certainly contains many truths, which I will not reveal in this review but hope that many readers still will take a chance on and discover for themselves.
Above all, this novel explores the power of story-telling. The narration has you captivated from get-go, even though the first third of the novel (for me) was slow-going. I, personally enjoyed the last third of the novel most (I am a fantasy fan after all), but really the entire novel is a treasure and one of those novels that deserves to be visited and revisited and explored in the same way each of the characters explored (what?) to reach that final epiphany. Each reader, I surmise, will gain something different from the text, which is the beauty of reading after all. ...more

I've put off reading a Pratchett novel that isn't part of the Discworld series, because quite frankly I didn't think I was going to enjoy anything by him that did not take place on his magical flat world. I was wrong...
This novel surpassed all expectations I had. It is one of those novels you can and should read over and over again, and I even considered opening it back up at the first page right after reading the last word on the last page!
The novel has so many valuable lessons hidden within its pages. Rich in metaphors only a genius such as Pratchett can come up with, themes that carry messages which should be taught to and explored by every single person alive on earth. The book was unreal and at the same time one of the most real and accurate renditions of life I've read in a long time. A beautiful story, that had me laughing and crying, had me thinking and feeling, had me angry and excited.
It's a masterpiece! A treasure which I will carry with me in my heart for the rest of my life. Do I sound disgustingly sentimental right now? Read the novel!! Only then would you understand......more
