I would have been tempted to rate it a five, but the truth is that one or two of the stories fell a little flat to me. Still, if you like horror and the macabre, this is worth the read for you. I read it all in about three hours, maybe two hours of reading and hey, it's free so no complaints here! (less)

This is a very dark and very morbid story that had an ending I never saw coming. Unfortunately I jumped into the series with this one which I think is part four. It seemed pretty stand alone though so no worries if you do the same. Great horror story. Great camp fire type story.(less)

I don't know what criteria there was for making the cut to get your story in this compendium but it should have been stricter. The book would have been better off trimming the size down to half and dropping all of the dead weight. I read every story from beginning to end because for some reason that I can't understand it's become a point of pride for me to do that over the years but I would say to you future readers that you shouldn't feel bad starting a story, deciding it sucks and skipping to the next one where this book is concerned.(less)

The second and final story in the set is the best I think and could really have been turned into a novella from the plot. There was a lot there to draw from. The first story, of which the set gets it's name, is a spin on a classic campfire scary story. Worth reading, took me all of about a half hour while I was watching the news and drinking coffee.(less)

It wasn't the worst book that I read by far but it definitely reminds me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer but with Zombies and it's definitely geared towards young adults rather than us old fogies. I would have probably rated it at least a three star if I was 15 years old and probably a four star if I was 13 years old. Buy this for your kids or buy this if you are a kid! Adults . . . no, don't.(less)

That said, there were some interesting plot twists and things that I really liked but it felt like there was possibly a rushed ending too. I don't know, maybe there is a sequal planned and he's working on it right now. Personally, I felt like just when it was getting good is when it ended.(less)

The first one had more than it's fair share of Voodoo Zombies that while interesting, really aren't what most people are dying to read about when they go for a giant book of Zombie short stories.
This one was different. This was darker, grittier, more bloody, and more apocalyptic than I could ever have dreamed. Total success if that is what the editor was going for in this instance and I like to think he was.
(Funny side story. I fell asleep reading this and my girlfriend turned my head in the middle of the night because I was snoring and I woke up right away thinking that the Zombies were groping for my face. Yeah, it's that good.) (less)

Now that we have that out of the way. Wow. There are a few things that really got me about this book. First, almost the entire thing takes place in a single apartment. Which makes it one of the only books that I've ever read to attempt something of that sort, not to mention pull it off by being able to make it interesting.
Basically, the plot of the book is that through a horrible misunderstanding the heroine is captured by a Vampire since she saw a body. She's given a choice of her new "owner" killing her quickly, or living in the apartment under his rules and being a ready and willing "donor" for a few cups of blood here and there whenever he wants it and whenever she can afford it.
Months go by.
So in short, picture this. You're kidnapped and forced to live in the same apartment with your kidnapper for months and months. There are no phones, no windows, no internet, no contact with the outside world. Food is brought to you. You're only allowed to watch TV with the sub-titles on and the volume down. Your kidnapper is sadistic and tortures people to death in a back room of the apartment and tells you that your time is coming sooner or later over and over. Then make it a little more complicated and throw in the fact that he's a Vampire. Nice twist to a traditional psycho type thriller story.(less)

That story was hokey in my opinion although it turned out alright by the end. The truth is, this book was awesome. One of the best books that has been honored in the Barnes and Noble Free Nookbook Fridays hands down.
Barron has a quirky writing style that appeals to me greatly although I can see how some others would find it irritating. The ending of the stories is abrupt at times to say the least, abrupt like a gunshot from no where might be a good way to describe it.
If you're from the Pacific Northwest you should pick this up, especially if you're from Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia or the surrounding environs as I am. Most of the stories are set in this area and reading about Satanic rituals down the road is awesome. Makes for a great late night read!(less)

I don't mind that, but using fifty percent of the document seems a little bit extreme. I can't complain too much though since it is free on the Nook. That said, it was pretty good writing and love a good Zombie story so if it isn't too expensive I'll probably add the novel to my to-read list on here.
Best part is reading the story and the author's bio, I'm literally all around where he lives and where this is taking place. Go Seattle area!(less)

I don't know if there are more in the series to be released but if there are I'll read them for sure. This story may have been the best of the three for character development. I absolutely loved the main guy in this. He may have been one of my favorite Zombie Apocalypse characters ever. I mean really, how awesome would it be to follow an unlikely survivor, someone starting with a severe handicap like Agoraphobia who hasn't left his apartment in over a decade until the day of the Zombie Outbreak? Freaking awesome. The only reason this didn't get five stars is because it was so short!(less)
