I found this series because i saw the art related to Carciphona by the original artist on deviantart. I was captivated by the artwork and by the composition of it - and then i saw that it was a webcomic that is free to read (and buy if you wish, and if you are able to).
I have read the whole series in one day. The comic currently has 14 chapters, and 5 volumes. Art is really gorgeous and detailed (especially in the later volumes). Not to mention character design! It's gorgeous! Another thing I want to mention is that the webcomic is read like a manga. ____________________________________________
Story and worldbuilding: ____________________________________________
This is a high fantasy genre, with an interesting world building and concept.
The world is called Maelstrom and it has 3 planes: Overworld - inhabited by Deities, Mortal Realms - human realm, and Underworld - inhabited by Demons. The story so far is set in the realm of humans, but before that, it is important to know that magic was practiced by humans - drawing the powers from demons, deities and souls of the Mortal realm. Except for the humans, in their world live other intelligent races who can also practice magic, such as beast-humans, who practice elemental magic, fairies - the deity beings, and many more. Humans cannot use their magic.
That changed when the world prohibited all uses of Common Magic by humans. When the princess of Raschecura kingdom was killed by assassin Blackbird, who is suspected of being Carciphona, the King declared prohibition, and many kingdoms followed. Prohibition happened also because of the appearance of demon infected human souls, known as Carciphona; appearance of the assassin who was immune to magic, called Blackbird, who wrecked havoc upon world; and summoning of the demons in mortal world. Carciphonas exist because of the magic humans used. Magic used demon spirits to use as a power, and when those spirits accumulated, it became harmful for humans. Those led to the the ban of the Magic by humans, where all sorcerers had to give up their powers.
The only exception was a girl called Veloce Visrin. The only sorceress left with the ability to use magic. The downside of it was that she should never use magic in front of other people, and that she should not do anything that would drive attention, as well as the King taking away the only person she cared for. Four years later, in the present, in the kingdom Kronzel, she will encounter three people who will change her life, including Keritzel, son of always absent aristocrat, his friend Weirin, and the last one being none other than the terror that inspired the Prohibition, Blackbird herself.
The story has a nice variety of characters, but the main focus is on Veloce, who was forced to live alone - without anyone helping her or being there for her, for 4 years; Keritzel, a kind 15 year old teen who wants to help her get back on her feet; Weirin, who is suspicious of everything and is arrogant, but cares deeply for Keritzel. And the only one left is Blackbird, an enigmatic human, who can negate magic, and the one who becomes obsessed with Veloce.
Overall, the first volume is about Veloce learning how to stand back on her feet, as well as introduction of important characters.
The start may be slow, but that is normal - you have to introduce your characters before heading deeper in the story. Having read all that is updated up to 31st May of 2015, i have to say that it didn't stop holding my attention, especially since I have read it all in one day, and that the story got so much better. ...more

I will write a short review for this.
This was not the kind of the book i expected it to be. I was wrong. I thought i could predict the story and the direction it was heading to, but every page impressed me. Complex and tragic characters, yet unlike the usual heroes/heroines i am reading about most of the time; an ordinary potential love story turned into something much more.
I'm not sure if this book is translated on English, but so far it has been translated on Serbian and German, and of course, it is originally written in French. It is worth reading and it was a good choice for 1st book of the 2015. year. ...more
