It was a charming children's novel about Inga, a young Viking girl with a mind of her own. There are two stories. In the first Inga wants to go "a-Viking" with the men of her village to bring back food and supplies for her family. In the second, she tries to save her older sister from marrying a hateful man.
Inga is smart, impulsive, and sassy. Girls will enjoy her character and the unique setting of a Viking village. However, I have a few small criticisms regarding the presentation of the book, the age group it is marketed towards, and the setting descriptions. This book was not carefully edited. There were several major grammatical errors which could be distracting to a young reader. In addition, this book is marketed as being for 8-12 year olds but I think it's definitely for younger readers. A 12 year old would not enjoy this story as it is very simple. I would recommend it for 7-9 year olds. It's a good "first novel" type of book. Lastly, I think the author should have focused more on the setting. She gives a few details but the setting is one of the most interesting aspects of the book.
Overall I would say this book is worth reading to/with your younger children!...more

I had been extremely disappointed with "Matched" and was loathe to try another ya fantasy/dystopia/romance but I grabbed it from the library and it was actually pretty good. Fast-paced, an intriguing world, a strong female character, what's not to love?
16 year old Katsa lives in world where some people are normal and others are "graced". The graced have special abilities that set them apart from everyone else. Some are mind readers, others can swim for miles, still others are amazing cooks. Katsa can kill.
I would recommend this book for anyone who liked the "Hunger Games" or for those who have difficulty finishing a book from beginning to end. This will grab and hold your attention....more

I am fascinated by the story of King Arthur and the knights of the roundtable and the beautiful Queen Guenever. I was expecting this book to be the best version of this story. Unfortunately, well I would say that I did enjoy the book overall, there were several issues with it and therefore I only liked it but did not love it.
First of all, it was way too long. It's 677 pages of small print and four major novels in one. Towards the end I just wanted it to wrap up quickly. Secondly, because the story was too long there were some redundant characters/side stories. This sometimes made it difficult to follow. Thirdly, I don't want to spoil the story but some incest is involved. This is something that I would prefer to avoid while reading for pleasure.
I did love the character of Merlyn. He reminded me of Dumbledore! I was definitely disappointed to see him leave the story. I also loved some of the humourous aspects of the book. The regal King Arthur is nicknamed "Wart" as a child and Sir Lancelot, the best knight in the world, has an ugly face. Further, the character of King Pellinore was quite adorable. He spends years on a quest to kill the "Beast" who he can't bear to kill in the end. Lastly, these books were exciting and the different adventures really sparked my imagination.
I would say that this book is worth reading if you have the time and concentration to devote to it. Don't expect to finish it quickly and at times you will be bored. However, the moments of enjoyment will make up for its length and dull parts....more
