It's a very important book, though, and a very important subject. Support your bees! Love your bees!(less)

I very rarely do not finish a book, but this one I literally threw down in disgust. The writing was poor, the dialogue felt contrived (I have read books written during the period in which this was based and no one talked the way these characters talk) and worst of all about halfway through the book I came across I scene where the "spirit" was taunting John Bell (who had only ever been called "John" up to this point, I believe) and said (and I quote): "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." What? WHAT? Are you kidding me? How does something like this get past a publisher?(less)

I'm only eight pages in and already I hate it. But I must confess, I am biased. I never liked the New Kids on the Block, I never had a crush on that cute boy in sixth grade, I never rooted for the Bills, I don't like flip flops or babies or bridal showers, I don't text message, so I have kind of a history of railing against things that "everybody" loves. Besides, I've resisted for so long that now I pick the book up with the utmost revulsion and contempt. And it's not just because she's a Mormon. I think. We shall see. Eight pages down, about seventy billion to go.
Ch. 1: "No one was going to bite me." Are you freaking kidding me? She actually went there.
Ch. 2: Awful, just awful. It's trash, such complete drivel.
Ch. 3: I give up. This is terrible. I can't read another chapter or another page, much less four entire books. I tried, and I just can't. And I don't think it's because I was biased to start with. It really is just an awful book.(less)

I went into it with an open mind, and hoped to gain some spiritual insight from it. However, when the book immediately recommended The Purpose-Driving Journal, The Purpose-Driven Calendar, Daily Inspiration for the Purpose-Driven Life, not to mention The Purpose Driven Life DVD Study Guide and The Purpose-Driven Life - Commuter Edition, I began to sense that despite the authors' good intentions the book has become a commercial monster of (dare I say) Biblical proportions, and I couldn't bear to be a part of it. Maybe someday I will calm down and be able to finish it. But I'll have to remember to get myself a leather-bound $15.00 Purpose-Driven Life Deluxe Journal beforehand!!(less)
