The characters are fairly well rounded and secondary ones help the story not distract from it.
The actual story seems to have a few fox holes in it when you start to read but once you work out the writers style it actually works really well, thus what you think are holes turn into story movement. Like I said takes a bit of time to get a grip on but once you do it becomes an easy to read story that is hard to resist reading.(less)

Aside from that, I love the characters.. I could get into them quite easily. I would like to have seen a little more development of them. I know that some of the secondary characters are in upcoming stories, but I'm talking about the story focal people. Still there was enough to hook me in to them and the story.
The story... REALLY excellent set up with the prologue. I gotta point out that it just meant that we know now where these people are from and why the story is happening. A lot of authors will just dribble out some bits through the story - maybe, but not Jess. There were some seriously non-noteworthy hiccups along the way but frankly I can't even really remember them so they were really really non-noteworthy.. :)
So if you wanna shifter/paranormal read.. I'm gonna say "Do yourself a favour!".. (yeah the Aussies all get that..)
Thanks Jess and keep going, this is panning to be an AMAZING story..(less)

I really think it's an interesting spin on the vampiric story map. The writing wasn't bad in any real way. Just that both the story and characters felt a little wooden (no puns intended!)No major character or story plot holes to speak of.
So what can I say to move this up into your reading list? Well like I said the story its self is a good addition to vampire lore. With the setting well it was reasonably well bought into being.
I've just realised that this story would have worked better with the location and some of the secondary characters having a story of their own to develop then this story would seem better suited to a chapter in the life of the location.
The second lead was not clearly represented either. I'm still feeling that I don't know him. I can see that the author would want that character to be a bit like that, but for my particular tastes, it didn't sit as well.
I really liked the 1st lead. I liked the way he thought and acted. :)
Some of the supporting characters were a little stereotypical, but not in a good way. Seemed to be added to try and emphasize a point that's been belaboured in vampire lore to much. Where as there are better ways to paint the dark side of vampires and to increase the tensions in the story.
Overall, I still think it's worth a read. It would certainly be a great addition to a series if it wasn't the first book in that series. And I loved the additions it makes to vampiric lore.(less)

Why wouldn't I have normally read this.. Well traditionally it's historical.. and I'm not grand on those (proven wrong a couple of times. It's based on a culture that whilst is interesting when I do see or hear something I wouldn't normally get wrapped up in it.
So what was the story like.. GREAT! The story is set in Japan in the distant past. There is great use of settings and historical content to bring the story into a believable place. At no time was I left thinking what a load of crap or that thre was a plot hole just there. Character use was abundent and never lost focus nor was it distracting to the overall story. Everyone was there for a purpose and that was to create a really good story.
Characters. EXCELLENT!!!!!!! Amazing, interesting, well developed... All words that you want to associate with a story. There are two main focus characters and both are really good examples of when a wrtier knows the characters. Secondary players abound in this story, and each and every one of them is there because they are needed for the story. Each one is there with a back story. No weird additions to the story with no explanation.
Quite frankly - If you want a story with a bit of a supernatural twist, some Japanese history/mythology and you want to finish it feeling like you have just read a damn fine story.. Then I'd recommend this. If your like me and tend to veer from history - don't!
Anna this is a great read and will certainly be on recommended reads lists from me for just about everyone!(less)

I almost marked this at 3 stars.. but I went with four because AJ and Serena have put up some great world building and some really good characters... The linking into the original book The Cake was good.
Story had a couple of flaws.. but mostly able to overlook them for the value of the rest of the story.. (AJ/Serena - water travel... O_O) Generally speaking though, the use of San Fran is good.. and our little side trip was fun too!! Just the whole concept of creating a world in our world was worked over pretty well, some authors would choose somewhere a little less challenging...
Characters and this is where the stars come in to it.. they really did a good job of using secondary characters with this. They weren't there to decorate the scenery but actually useful.. The focus on our two hero's is good and they were really quite sweet.. although I think one of them could have been a little less sweet.. hehe just for realism..
I just read my last review and I used the word Sweet in that too!!! Theme.. I think so.. So I look forward to another one hopefully..(less)

First book just finished and wow, I didn't see it going the way it did. (And no, that's as much as I'm giving away!) As per Ally's style of writing she brings us a story with a good couple of curves and steps to the left of the usual romance directions.
Characters - Great, really well rounded and developed. In someways, it would have been good to get to know a couple of the slightly more secondary characters, but over all you get a great sense of who they are and how they fit into the main characters lives.
Plot - Ahhh I think I summed it up above. The usual romance plot devices are there, but they always swing in a different direction to what you think, which is something that I've noticed with a lot of Ally's writings (well the couple that I've read!)
I'm about to start the second one and get the feeling I should probably buy the others in the series before I start!(less)

You don't need to decide if you like a vampire tale, you don't need to decide anything... Patricia Lynne has written a hard hitting tale on humanity. I have spent the last 24 hours reading it at EVERY possible/conceivable point I could.. I wanted to just sit and hide till I finished it and then I didn't know if I wanted to cry, smile or bitch-out at Patricia for a remarkable ending...
Characters - Each character was so finely crafted, with no wasted words or ideas for each one. The depth we get to know them and how quickly that is created is amazing. I think even to say that you feel for them just doesn't sum up how well they are written.
Plot.... Not a plot bunny or hole in sight... just the story no filler, no wasted effort, no jerking around. It would be a lie to say it was a simple plot, yet it doesn't go over board on complexity.
Style - The way this is written is so suitable to the story and the characters..
Damn but I want to say so much but I'm still working through my emotions after reading this... But THANK-YOU Patricia... I'd give you another star easily for being such a brilliant story if I could..(less)
Damn, but this is Daniels first effort at writing.. and it's gripping.. An emotional roller coaster ride in places.
Characters are well formed with good back grounds. They fit into the plot as required without coming across as filler. The main character is very well formed from the outset. I found it quite easy to be caught up in everything happening.
Story has no lag, jumps or plot holes that could easily have annoyed or detracted from the journey.
My one criticism of the story is the ending but I'm not sure how it really affects everything. This story could have been tied up before the actual ending, (as I kept expecting it to!) It sort of felt everything happened VERY quickly at the end. BUT having said that, I really don't know that the ending could have been dragged out in the next book. I guess I will have to wait and see.
Overall I have to say I think this book is as close to a work of art as can be. I don't need to sit back and 'appreciate' the obvious attention to details, the character descriptions or any of a myriad of other things one want's to acknowledge a writer for in their work. The book does it all. I am going to harrass Daniel though for the next book... NOW!!!! (less)

The book starts off quiet poetic really. Then as we get to know the main character the story starts to unfold. It just flows through out the whole book. There was no parts that jumped from scene to scene leaving me feeling like I missed something.
All the major players are introduced fully and built into real people who I could relate to in someway or another. The protagonist's are all built so well.
The story is blindingly well written with just the right mix of information and tantalising description to keep you wondering just where this is headed. Every time I tried to second guess the direction, I was left flummoxed because it never quite went where I thought it would.
PLEASE don't let the following turn you off it's why I hate categorised books. This book is really a YA book, but the lead story is a love story between two teenagers so it sort of fits into the m/m romance category. Yet I'm hesitant to put it there for turning people off the actual story which if the world were a better place full of more understanding would dump Edward/Bella/Jacob on their respective rumps. And having said that you also can guess that it fit's in the 'vampire' genre too.
I for one can NOT wait for book 2 to come out and have an expectation that this story will continue to grow. Thank you to Michael for his hard work.(less)

Matthew Lang puts a new spin on writing.. a little bit of many genre's and some REALLY good characters add a couple of twist's, a healthy dose of humour and Hot Damn... I giggled aloud at some of that humour too.. Was holding my breath in a couple of scenes, late back from lunch and two breaks, all because I HAD to finish it!!! I repeat, FREAKING AWESOME read..
I have to admit that I was a wee bit sceptical as I've read a couple of local authors who sort of weren't overly brilliant but good enough to read.
This story could have been set anywhere, it just happened to be set in Melbourne and the other settings in the book only added to the story line. (trying not to kill the book for other people reading it!)
I really am expecting something even more brilliant from Matthew's next book..(it doesn't have to be set in Melbourne!!) I will be watching and waiting with baited breath.(less)
