I have no idea why I waited so long to read this book. It's been on my shelf for more than 2 years. But I'm glad I finally read it. It's wonderful, heart warming and heart-breaking at the same time. When I reached the end I was so sad to say good bye to all the wonderful characters. Beautiful and poignant story about love, friendship and above all, hope in a very turbulent time in human history. Highly recommended....more
Well, the only reason I am giving this book 4, not 5 stars, is that it got slow at times (which DID irritate me). Otherwise, it's a lovely, warm story (though there were a couple of descriptions which seemed a bit brutal to me) witnessing a passionate love between a painter and his muse! All that is expected from a good fiction (historical fiction with romance elements) you will find among these pages..no doubt about it! Passionate love...forbidden love...war...sacrifice. Enjoyed the story very much and definitely recommend the book, especially to readers who enjoy romance books! ...more

Maybe reading this book after finishing The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown was not a good idea. I can't help but think Mr White is obviously influenced by Dan Brown's writing, but let's get something straight - Michael White is not Dan Brown. From the first few pages I knew the chances of me liking this book are slim, but as I approached the ending it became clear.
God, there are so many things that irritated me, like the million characters, neither one of them well developed. I honestly don't know WHY on earth someone would introduce so many characters in his work, and this is the main problem why all of them seemed so alike to me. That sucks! The only reason why I'm giving it two stars instead of one is the fact I enjoyed around 100 pages of it, the rest of the book was...blah!
The ending didn't surprise me and overall this was a very predictable book.
Would I read another of White's books? I don't think so, at least not in the near future. I'm gonna finish this review with a warning and sorry if I may sound harsh - I DON'T recommend Equinox! There are so many better mysteries/thrillers out there. ...more

Well, this is a story about a young girl named Liesel and about her life in Nazi Germany. The story is narrated by Death, which I loved, because the narration sounded like a fairytale. But don't go thinking now this is going to be just another sad story about a Jewish girl in a German Concentration Camp..because Liesel is German, yet her mother and father are communists and she and her brother have to leave home. They are supposed to be adopted by another German family, living in Molchin, in the poorest Himmel street. Everywhere Liesel goes...Death follows her. She loses her 3 years younger brother Werner on their way to their new home (at Hubermann family) and that's when it happens...The pain..the loss..the first crime little Liesel commits. She steals a book while she and her mother are burying the body of her brother, sweet little Werner. Steeling books becomes her passion...her way of remembering things, of her brother which she recently lost, her mother whom she will never see again. Each word contained in every stolen book will give her the strength to survive those days of pain, sufferings, poverty.
Behind this lovely story stands a big message, but I wouldn't go that far in spoiling the surprise for you. I will just tell you it's a perfect book, with lovely characters, each adorable in it's own way. Liesel, her new mother and father (Rosa and Hans Hubermann), her best friend Rudy Steiner...and a mysterious man that will change the course of her life. Even if you don't like historical fiction, you will definitely like this one.
I wish I could give it 10 stars. 5 stars seems a bit underestimating, but I can't change the rules around here. This is a story that will make you cry, think, wonder...and once again believe in Mankind. ...more
