I loved them in this, as well as Griff's mother too. It was hilarious and very sexy and also extremely sad in parts too. Possibly my favourite Dare novel to date. As always I can't wait to read more from her. ...more

The action was captivating & threads I'd thought were just filler from the second book were pulled together, the description of the world & emotion & Magic were really beautiful in some places. I only had a tiny criticism in that I sometimes felt the antagonism/sparring between all the different characters was a bit over the top but as a whole I basically didn't want it to end.
And then it did end & it was a great finale, exciting & poignant, but in the conclusion a couple of things were left unresolved. One of these I could sort of come to terms with but the other I just didn't understand the point of & it's driving me crazy. So much so I was close to docking a whole star rather than just a half but I know that wouldn't be fair.
This last book really raised the series from great to amazing and maybe if I reread it later I won't feel as cheated by the ending. ...more

I think this book would have been a lot better with two things - conflict and a huge amount of tightening up. I liked the humour, I think the author could write a fantastic romantic comedy but it was just too repetitive and the issues between the hero and heroine were weak. Unfortunately I skimmed read the end but I did like some parts a lot. ...more

Once again, I loved the historical detail, even more so since it was based in Brighton and Lewes, very close to where I live and often visit. I especially liked that there was more diversity shown, sometimes just as a part of normality, and at other times as a plot point to give conflict, than there usually in a novel set in this era. I was a little disappointed with the relationship between Helen and Carlston, probably because he was so...unwell and therefore there was not as much opportunity to get to know him more. I also missed the sharpness of Helen's intellect but it was understandable given the new arena of politics and secrecy she was dealing with. On the whole it was still a brilliant book and I can't wait for the next one, but I didn't fall in love with it as much as I did the first - possibly because Helen is moving on from the world of ballrooms and I missed it a little....more

It's not my normal type of romance but in a way I was pleased because it meant I experienced something a bit different and was pleasantly surprised. I think that this story touched on some important aspects of BDSM relationships and I would have been interested to have them explored in further detail. Just in general actually, I would have liked a bit more in depth discussion between the hero & heroine, as well as some more experience of the post apocalyptic world. It seemed like the end was promising a bit more in terms of action, which didn't materialise but I think that might be set up for a longer story running through the series, which I would be quite happy to read on for and there are some potential character pair ups that I would be quite interested to see too....more

I wish it had been around when I was a teenage because I might have been able to say "ah, so that's what I have - I'm not just shy" and saved myself a fair amount of anguish. I also thought it was good that the actual bullying that tipped Audrey over the edge wasn't gone into in massive detail because it would have taken the focus away from her ongoing issues and that is quite an important thing to understand I think; the long haul, of mental illness.
I was slightly disappointed with the romance and, sweet as Linus seemed, there just wasn't enough going on in that part of the story for me. I might even be tempted to say I felt it unlikely she could have managed some of the interactions she did so quickly but everyone is different.
Her family were a strong bunch of characters and the impact of everything that has happened on them too was cleverly revealed. Sometimes her mother was a bit over the top but that added some comedy that helped to lift the tone. A small pet peeve was Felix - I have a 4 year old and he seemed a bit more like a 3 year old in terms of communication and behaviour, especially since he was at school but that it didn't change the story at all - as I said, just a pet-peeve!...more

In this bI feel like this book was written just for me - I love regency romance and YA fantasy/paranormal and before those have been separate things. In this book I got everything I enjoy from both genres and more. As a work of historical fiction, this is brilliant - probably the best researched and subtly immersive novel I have read in a long time. All aspects of day to day life were there, the characters were not in a bubble, they were aware and part of the political backdrop and most significantly for me, I felt that the attitudes from the time with regard to gender and class were managed very realistically, whilst cleverly using Lady Helen's inherent differences to create a genuine conflict in her.
She was a brilliant heroine, witty and genuinely smart, keeping up with the movement in the plot, thinking ahead as would be realistic for her character. The action and different settings were always engaging - from being presented to the Queen in one "world", to facing a Deceiver in another, there was always tension, high stakes and great atmosphere. The secondary characters were interesting and, of course, I'm always a sucker for a brooding anti-hero.
