Well-written and packed full of great ideas but I couldn't escape the feeling I was missing half the stories that could've been told within such an interesting setup. I feel like it's the kind of story that needed a bit more room to breathe; the war part of the story feels somewhat summarized. Still, a cracking ending and some very affecting characters.(less)

After a disappointing second act, I thoroughly enjoyed the conclusion to this trilogy. The gloves are off and the writing gets grittier and harder (much more to my personal taste). I've heard a lot of people complain about the ending but I thought it was fantastic. A surprising and believable conclusion to a moving, enjoyable adventure. Great stuff!(less)

Continuing an already good story right where the last left off. We still care about the characters, and the writing and themes are still as good as ever but I couldn't help but feel disappointed by how totally predictable the outcome has become. It also grates slightly that the twist of the tale is blindingly obvious to everyone except for the main protagonist and a lot of the dramatic tension from Catniss' agonising over events is lost due to the story being told from her (extremely blinkered) point of view. I'd still recommend this on the strength of the writing and characters but temper your expectations. (less)

Great characters, great story. I don't normally read YA and have to temper my review accordingly, but this was a compelling story and I can understand why its so successful. I feel there are a few pacing issues (particularly in the conclusion) but overral a real page-turner. I feel the kids killing kids theme would be more suited to an adult novel with appropriately increased realism in the writing, but given the target audience this is purely my own taste; as it stands, you really feel for the main characters and though some of the scifi elements are a little woolly (though I'm sure this was a creative choice rather than a shortcoming) you care about what happens, so as far as I'm concerned this is a good story.(less)
