I would have given this story three stars except for one glaringly huge issue I had with the book. It was written in first person which is to be expected for an urban fantasy staring an ass-kicking heroine. However, it also followed the normal formula of a romance novel in that the story also followed the hero- but in first person. The first time it switched between the two perspectives threw me off so bad that it took me about 100 or so pages to get back into the story.
Now as my husband pointed out, having multiple pov's in first person can be done if it's done well. With the exception of the sun/moon symbol, I had no idea whose perspective I was reading from every time the section broke on the page. The voices of the hero/heroine were too much of the same in order for me to tell the difference between the two.
I definitely would have given this story more stars if it had been written either solely from The Wraith's POV or in 3rd person showing both sides. I would have given it a fourth star if the the author had shown the world a lot more and grounded us (the audience) a lot more in it. I had a difficult time figuring out if it was our world but in alt history kind of way or a completely different world. This was especially so with the steam engine hackney's. That seemed to be the only steam driven thing in the world and really made no impact on the story. Also, the language used by the characters was a mix of Victorian/Edwardian London and modern day language. Again, completely thrown off.
Overall- cool concept, the story just needs work concerning the POV and the world building. Maybe if these things are better established in books 2 & 3 I would continue reading. The concept is definitely worth another try....more

Despite it being over 650 pages in it's paperback form, this book hooked me from the very beginning and always kept me going. I can't wait to find out what happens to Sorne and Imoshen in the next book. I'm just glad that I have the time currently to read this massive book series....more

Anita is her normal self with a twist- she's tired of being her argumentative, prudish, stubborn self. She's still learning balance in her life between her job and ALL of her live-in sweeties, lovers, boyfriends, and preternatural fuck buddies. She's doing all of this while tracking down untied rove vampires.
The mystery/action plot was thin and really the most powerful scene was the ending one. As per usual Hamilton shined with the sex and relationship scenes. The ending I found to be a bit abrupt and not as satisfying, especially after the emotional scene she had after saving Nathaniel and Sin at the end. Overall, I gave it three stars for another typical and entertaining Anita Blake novel. And also because a small part of me hopes that she'll branch away from both the Anita and Merry series....more

My only complaint is how back story was filled in using thousands of questions by the main character to all those around her. While I get the situation of feeling totally lost/in the dark, I wish that technique could have been toned down and interspersed with other ways to reveal things.
Oh and great sex scenes. Where's my Armani clad alien? I'll definitely take one of those. :D...more
