The saving grace, for me, was the detailed and lush descriptions of people and context... but oh my god did it drag... (and speaking of drag, the parts with the Lady Chablis were my absolute favorites, followed closely by the parts featuring Minerva...) While I do enjoy a vivid description of a people and their culture, these people- these affluent, extravagant, loquacious Savannahians were hard for me to relate to... and yet, it was completely palatable as long as I kept repeating to myself that it was a work of non-fiction.
