Favorite Line: "Tiny snails?" she asked. "They curl up like a cinnamon roll inside their shell."
Favorite illustration: The two page spread of the sleeping tiger in the jungle.
Kid-appeal: A lovely book about the routine of going to bed. The illustrations are just stunning and dreamy in their quality and tone. I'd love to hear the illustrator talk about the process of creating these images. Worth a re-read to pour over the details that include things like constellations hiding in the bear's fur.(less)

Favorite illustration: I love the paper castle shown in the early pages of the book
Favorite line: "She too was steadfast. The Tin Soldier was touched and could have wept tears of tin, but it would not have been becoming. He looked at her and she looked at him, but neither of them said a word."
Kid-appeal: Nice story, but I think the heavy message of love and loss are going to be above the heads of most child-readers.(less)

Favorite illustration: The black and white illustration for Little Bo-Peep
Kid-appeal: This is a giant volume at close to 200 pages that packed with lots of familiar and many lesser known rhymes will most likely enchant young readers. Each page has lots of illustrations either larger sketches, or smaller ones interspersed with the text. A few color plates are scattered throughout, but I actually prefer her black and white sketches. I think this would make a lovely gift for a young child.

Favorite illustration: The house of the Seven Dwarfs
Kid-appeal: It is pretty long, but both my girls (7 and 10) hung right in there with the book and loved pointing out the differences to the Disney version of the story. The illustrations were great, though small in comparison to the voluminous amounts of text.
Favorite illustration: p. 4-5 Where Little Brave Heart is sitting in front of the buffalo hide with picture writing.
Kid-appeal: I do like the familiar "Don't eat me . . . there is somebody bigger than me to eat" story line, but not at the expense of a heavily stereotyped book. (less)

Favorite illustration: There Was an Old woman Who Lived in a Shoe.
Kid-appeal today: These nursery rhymes were much more familiar to me and my 7yo, so it was more enjoyable to read than the 1938 Caldecott Honor, Four and Twenty Blackbirds. The format of the book we have is very small (5" x 5") so the resulting illustrations are very tiny, but then I'm probably spoiled by the delightful Richard Scarry Mother Goose I grew up with!(less)

Favorite illustration: The full page, image of Red the Cat's head.
Favorite line: "His real name was known only to cats. I think it was something like Mr. Furpatto Purrcatto."
Kid-appeal: I like the illustrations with the modern, graphic design-style, but didn't care for the story of Red the Boy and Red the Cat, who didn't really like each other. There's also some stereotyping of Native Americans as warriors, as portrayed by kids, that makes this feel very dated.
Favorite illustration: Full-color page where the birds are getting measured for their new looks and trying on feathers.
Favorite line: "There will be measuring, fitting, trimming, cutting, pinning, puckering, stitching, and hemming."
Kid-appeal: This is a super wordy folk-tale that helps to explain how birds got their feathers. My own daughter thought it was awful . . . while I can't think of a specific, more contemporary text that explains how birds got their looks, there has got to be a better answer than this book. (less)

Favorite line: The music for dancing was lovely. There was an according that went SQUEAK, SQUNK, a triangle that went TING, TING a guitar that went PLINK, PLUNK and a big horn that went, POOMPF, POOMPF. It was a wonderful party.
Favorite illustration: When the bears are all in their costumes dancing in a big circle.
Kid-appeal: I liked that this was part of the growing trend to have a better balance of text to illustrations, thus making it not as long. I liked the soft-focus illustrations and thought they were sweet and whimsical. This story about a group of squabbling koala bears that learn to get along was a bit odd in my opinion, but I'm sure it will have its fans. (less)

Favorite Line: Petals fall from the flowers gently on the table . . . gaily in the wind.
Favorite illustration: The illustration that accompanies the above line, with the living room and the cat at the french doors.
Kid-appeal today: I enjoyed this short and sweet book about all the different things that can fall down. I think preschoolers and kindergartners would still like this book.(less)
Favorite line: "So everyday on the Liberty Bell it was beans in the morning, beans at noon, beans at night, and in between-beans!"
Favorite illustration: The boy's mother wishing him off at the dock.
Kid-appeal today: I liked that this had a nice balance of text/white space/illustrations. It felt like a storybook you could still share today, without the readers or audience getting restless. (less)

Kid-appeal: Way, way, WAY too long. If I kept wondering when it was going to be over, I can imagine many readers would feel the same way. My daughter and Caldecott-side kick got to this one in the book bag before I did and went out of her way to tell me how much she didn't like it. On the plus, as always, I love Ets's illustrations. These I'm guessing are wood block, or linoleum cut prints with amazing detail. Illustrations 4-stars, text 2-stars.(less)

Favorite Illustration: p. 13, the wintery scene of the house in the fields
Favorite line: When the house talks about her new world in the city.
"This must be living in the city," thought the Little House, and didn't know whether she liked it or not. She missed the field of daisies and the apple trees dancing in the moonlight.
Kid-appeal today: High! Kids will enjoy the pictures and the story of change will be understandable. Love this one!

Favorite illustration: The pages before the title page with Cinderella in her carriage
Favorite line: The two sister were in such a twitter of excitement that for two days they hardly took time to eat.
Kid-appeal: I think longevity of circulation speaks for itself. Our (large) library system has 43 copies and I was unable to renew this one as it was needed for another hold. The story is nicely translated and the images are both dreamy and whimsical, hence I can see the appeal. (less)
