While this book was really cool it also had some things that I did not like that much...
The things that I didn't love: 1: Inconsistent information. Example: Cvareh is the younger brother of Petra and Petra is his younger sister... How does that work? 2: Unfinished scenes. Example: Ari tries to grab her daggers before someone else takes them. We never find out if she succeeds until a page later where Ari uses them. This might be something that Elise did to keep things exciting and at a high pace but to me it feels sloppy. 3: Weird/difficult sentences. Some are so confusing that I have to reread them again and again which gets me out of the reading flow. I forgot to mark an example for this but I found most of these sentences at the beginning (first 150 or so pages). 4. The pace. Because we have 5 different POVs the story for the first 300 or so pages is kind of slow. Every time we reach an exciting point with one of the characters the chapter ends and you have to read from 4 different ones before you go back to the exciting POV which has then already passed the exciting moment. 5. Timeline. We never have two chapters back to back from the same POV. Because of this it sometimes feels as if the timeline is screwed up. We will read about something, have 4 different POV chapters in between and then go back to the something that we were reading about and almost no time has passed. It is difficult to feel how much time has passed in this book and between every chapter and sometimes it feels like we are going back and forth in time.
These 5 points made me give the book 4 stars. I know that it is a good rating but it still hurts. Elise Kova is one of my favourite authors and I have never not given a book by her 5 stars until I read this one. The 4 stars are still deserved because the characters, world, plot and writing style are really good. And the last 150/200 pages were definitely worthy of 5 stars. I really hope that the next (and I believe final book in the Loom Saga) will be a 5 star read....more

Most of the assignments are very useful to help you prepare for the exam though not every type will also be included on the exam. The answers for my edition are included and there are also chapters which explain the grammar. The thing that I disliked about this book is that a lot of the chapters start with a bunch of group discussions that you need to do. Also the cd with the audio files is not included so I can't do the listening assignments. A nice extra with my edition is that it also includes a code that will give you access to 4 complete Cambridge CAE practise exams.
So do I recommend this when you are preparing for the CAE on your own? Yes, but be aware that there will be assignments that you can't do!...more
The first part of the story reminded me a bit of Wake by Amanda Hocking. Here we have this young girl who one day finds out that she is a mermaid/siren and has to deal with this new world, the secrets that come with it and the temptations. Though how they became this creature and the rest of the story is completely different, it definitely drew me in. After all, Wake is one of my favourite mermaid/siren books. The rest of the book sadly wasn't as good. The story is interesting but a lot of things are either not explained at all or, in my opinion, too late. The characters were flat though I did like following Halen her thoughts about everything that happened. I liked that she doubted herself and that she wasn't sure if she even WANTED to do this. But at the same time I did not fell in love with her as a character and the romance wasn't convincing. Overall, this book feels more like a rough manuscript. It could use some editing to get rid of the grammar/spelling mistakes and flesh out the characters and the world a bit more. If you are looking for a quick mermaid/siren book though, you might want to give this a go if the synopsis sounds interesting to you....more
