The first couple of chapters were a bit of a struggle for me, I really had to get used to the writing style. The descriptions were sometimes a bit confusing and I had to read some sentences a couple of times before I felt like I finally understood what the author was saying. Once I got used to the writing style I read this book somewhat faster but not as fast as I normally read. For some reason I did not fly through this book. But that's okay because I really enjoyed it.
Tahereh Mafi has created two amazing worlds in this book. Both of these worlds are extremely colourful and weird and curious in their own way. The characters that we follow in this book match these worlds perfectly. They are weird and funny but at the same time flawed and human. The addition of the narrator was just the cherry on the cake. I also really enjoyed that there was no romance in this. I know this is middle grade but it seems to be such a trend! Guys and girls can't seem to just stay friends in so many books. This one however had a wonderful friendship and I really hope it stays that way if there would be a sequel.
This book can easily be a standalone but I'm somewhat hoping that we will see another Surrender and another adventure taking place in this world. It feels like there is so much more to discover!...more

1. In a Bambo grove - 4.5 stars Really enjoyed this one. We get short testimonies of everyone who was connected to a murder. These people include the murderer, the victim, eye witnesses and the person that found the body. At the end though we still don't know exactly what happened since everyone tells the story differently and elements change. I would have liked to know which one was real since I was trying to figure it out while reading the testimonies but did not get that satisfaction.
2. Death Register - 5 stars So sad but so good. I loved how we got these little views of people that have been important to the author but are dead.
3. The Life of a Stupid Man - 2.5/3 stars This one was confusing. It was told in little snippets (not more than half a page most of the time) and didn't really seem to connect with all the other pieces. Some did, some did not and others I did not understand why they were included in the story. It got better further on in the story, you can feel the ending coming but this was my least favourite out of the three. ...more

I found it really difficult to follow because so many names *cough* latin names for animals *cough* were in this book that I did not know. Darwin is trying to paint a picture of the things that he is seeing and I think that his story would greatly improve if drawings had been added. The one story in which these animal names weren't so heavily featured was also the one that I enjoyed the most. I will probably pick up the whole book at some point in my life. When I do however, I will keep google open on my phone so that I can look up all those animals that Darwin is talking about....more

Okay... I'm ready...
So... I loved this. After finishing the Air Awakens series I was wondering if Elise Kova could write another series with characters that I would love as much as that cast. And against my expectations, I did! I fell in love with these characters slower than with Air Awakens but I definitely fell in love with them.
The story is told from multiple point of views and all of them have their own personality and voices that truly resonate throughout the whole book. No character is the same, each and every one of them has their own (hidden) agenda and have a different line that they will draw when things go to far.
Ari, one of our main characters, totally reminds me a bit of Celaena from the Throne of Glass series. She is a woman who knows what she wants, who knows what her talents are and is willing to use them to reach her goals. I prefer this type of character a lot more than the ''Oh-I-am-oh-so-talented-but-I-will-not-recognise-this-and-deny-it-even-though-I-must-use-my-talents-to-do-this-or-that''. They bug the hell out of me. But not Ari! Ari has a lot of mystery surrounding her and I can't wait to find out what she is hiding (EVA?!).
Flor is adorable. She is the kind of girl that I would love to have as my baby sister. She is kind, strong, optimistic and smart. Absolutely wonderful (and very creative with certain powders, love!).
Cvareh... Well let's just say that I wasn't on his side at the beginning. After reading the first Leona POV chapter I thought that he must be a d*ck. And seeing how Ari viewed dragons, that also didn't help his case with me. But then we got to know him a bit better and I started to like him.
This book is a great start I think to this series. There are still so many questions left unanswered and we have seen so little of this new world that Elise Kova has build. I can't wait to discover it all! The thing that I loved the most about this world as of right now are the guilds and their history. They sound so awesome!
Which is another reason why I'm really looking forward to all the Guild Games rewards that will be unlocked. My most anticipated one? Hopefully a character profile of one of the dragon characters. I as of right now imagine them as colourful dragons without wings and a bit humanoid but I have no clue if I'm right or not.

This book was exactly what I expected it to be.
I wasn't expecting to love it, and also not to hate it. I was expected a play and that I got. I was expecting to see characters that I loved in a new way (as adults). I expected to see them much changed in some ways (they were) and much the same in others (they were).
It wasn't as bad as I almost expected it to be after seeing so many negative reviews. Yes, Harry has changed. But no, I do believe that it is in a realistic way. I loved the idea of the story but I felt that the scenes changed so quickly and therefore it felt rushed. Had this been a proper book instead of a play I would probably enjoyed it a lot more. Had I seen this script as a play I would once again enjoyed it a lot more. But this is what we got, we got a script and I'm not able to go to London and see the play. So overall I'm content with what we got. No matter what, I would still like to see more of this world and its characters and history....more

I did not fall in love with the characters or their love and the repetition is endless (Pippa needs research, Cross doesn't think he is good enough). Another thing that I missed were Penelope and Bourne. I loved their love and would have liked to see them more. Penelope is after all Pippa's older sister and it seems odd that she would not be there given the whole situation.

I can't remember the last time I have laughed so much when reading a book. The last time I shipped a couple so hard. I did not care for the sex in this book, but then again I have never cared for it with any other book/movie/whatever. This must seem odd, since I picked up a book that you know beforehand will contain this. But there was more in this book than just the sex. There was a fun and interesting story and some great characters. Even if I never pick up anything else in this genre ever in my life I do feel like I will reread this book a couple of times and maybe even also the other books in this series.
I was completely taken by surprise by this book and I rather like it. Pretty much how Penelope and Bourne ended up getting married......more
