Combined with an exceptionally well-written story and believable characters, those factors make The Meat Market feel just around the corner.
The point of view is intimate and brings the reader right into Jonathon's heart and mind, and makes the story more important to the reader. There's a good mix of action and down time that flows naturally, and the dialog and character interactions are well done. The imagery is rich and still trusts the reader's imagination to fill in the details.
Overall, this is an excellent read, and I'll definitely buy others in the series. Highly recommended!(less)

The characters were well-written and realistic, with no need for contrived misunderstandings. Such a relief to read an historical that departs from the usual innocent but headstrong miss and the ruthless scoundrel and the many ways they set about deceiving one another!
Ms MacFarlane's use of dialect and her inclusion of details from daily life of the period add authenticity. The narrative style is a bit less intimate than I usually prefer, but is perfect for the time span and the scope of the events. This story reminds me of the strength and determination of my ancestresses, to have survived and preserved their way of life despite war and all the horror that comes with it.
I received this book free for my honest review and will purchase the next in the series ASAP.(less)

I looked at the sample of Dom Wars Round One because several friends were raving about it. I was amazed and relieved to find a REAL Dom, one who has matured and grown into a real human man.
The Dom Wars plot provided a brilliant showcase for a realistic man who could be both Dominant and Human. Lucian Bane has given readers an alternative to the arrogant, chauvinistic jerks that litter the pages of BDSM fiction. Suddenly, female readers interested in the lifestyle won't be victimized by every abusive pig out there calling himself a Dom, because now they know what the real thing looks like.
The book is excellently written in a strong style that brings the reader right into the characters' heads. The characters' emotions were realistic. I've seen a little criticism of the 'insta-love' - I have to say, Hubby and I met almost 28 years ago, and fell in love within a couple of hours, and married 6 weeks later. So 'insta-love' in a book isn't a problem for me, but I'll reserve judgement on that aspect until after I see how realistically the relationship is developed. Even when two people love each other deeply, there are still issues to be worked out, so I can believe that part IF Lucian and Tara have to learn how to be together.
I saw some points that could be further developed or explained, but since this is a series, I trust the author will address those points in the future books.
Overall, Dom Wars Round One is an excellent read, and I'll be anxiously awaiting the next installment!
