If you haven't brushedThis is a great collection of intriguing essays on the state of modern science and its interplay with modern American culture. If you haven't brushed up on your astrophysics/cosmology recently, then you will also get a nicely detailed layman's level description of our current knowledge about the current universe, its history, and why we think we know certain things in very satisfying terms. Although a bit repetitive, due to its origin as a collection of separate essays, it is a definite good read for any science fan's bookshelf....more

This is an excellent layperson's introduction to the mathematics and viewpoints used in the modern approach to classical (non-quantum) mechanics. TheThis is an excellent layperson's introduction to the mathematics and viewpoints used in the modern approach to classical (non-quantum) mechanics. The intent is obviously to pave the way for the next book on quantum mechanics, as they waste no time in going from Newtonian to Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics. There are just a few errata and some hand-waving sentences that would make most mathematicians cringe (ie., the author sometimes conflates smooth functions with analytic ones, and in one instance equated a vanishing second derivative with the presence of a point of inflection), but a visit to the website and some experience with calculus should allow the reader to get past these minor errors. The value of the text is primarily that it is the only one at this time that concisely and entertainingly introduces the layperson to modern mechanics in a fully usable form which emphasizes the practical applications, not merely as a series of anecdotes....more

Even so, it contains very valuable overview of the glaring flaws in methodology, citation (citing papers that do not support or that even contradict the statement due to different definitions), media interpretation and several examples of unintentional statistical errors that are endemic to gender studies cases. This should be required reading for anyone in these fields. If you are familiar with statistical and experimental design flaws, you may already suspect many of the flaws presented here, but the actual presence of them in the most cited papers in these fields may be surprising....more
