I lived in my own world and I liked it there." That's my favorite line in the book. It pretty much sums up Aurora's character, in my opinion. And as a writer, I can relate to it. So, where to begin... This is officially my new favorite YA paranormal series, and I really don’t like a lot of paranormal YA with the exception of Jennifer Armentrout’s Lux and Covenant series. I guess when I say “not much paranormal YA”, I really just mean vampires. I’m a Twilight fan. I wrote my own vampire series. I love vampire films. So, yeah. I’m tired of vamps at the moment, no matter how much I love these classic monsters and the million different ways they can be re-created. Which is why this book was completely refreshing! It was all the mystery and romance found in Twilight, except it was MUCH sexier, and all around...better. Way better. On top of that, it’s a slayer series, so if you are a geek like me who loved shows like Buffy, then this will be right up your alley. There's action, blood, and violence, oh my. Okay, back to the reasons this series rocks... Aurora Sky. First, that name says it all—how badass is that name? Even better than the heroine’s name is her character. She’s strong, believable, and not at all wishy washy or “I’m so cool, and I know it.” One minute, I really believed she was this scared teenager who is thrust into this situation that she totally doesn’t want any part of, and the next she’s trying to blend in and just be a normal teen at school. Then she’s believable when her feelings are hurt because she’s lonely, her so called “friends” start treating her like crap, and she can't quite seem to fit in anymore. So she starts to do what most teenagers do when they feel singled out...she rebels. No one really takes the time to even stop and consider how she feels about the traumatic event she went through. So she gives Aurora a makeover, which involves a little something like this: Kill first vampire Get drunk Kiss a boy Lose virginity Obviously, these things don't change much for Aurora. They don't make her feel alive again or make the pain go away. But enter the next reason this book rocks, and Aurora starts to come to life again... Fane. When Aurora starts to rebel a bit, she flings herself straight into Fane Donado’s arms. Oh, my my my. Where do I begin with Fane? He had me at this description: He had one of those disastrous looks that captured my attention--like Edward Scissorhands. (This is only my favorite movie and character of all time, so I'm a bit biased here.) And then these lines: "Don't worry, Aurora Sky. You don't have to invite me home." His teeth flashed when he grinned. "Yet." Fane lowered the cigarette and pointed it at me. "I do like your legs." Despite the cold, my cheeks heated and were quite possibly the only warm part of my body. The cold had officially gone to my brain. "These pasty things?" "Pale. Ivory. Silk." Each word was like a caress. "Your skin is a thing of beauty." Fane was not Scott. He'd eat me alive. The setting. How often do we see vampire hunter stories take place in the beautiful, cold, dark, and snowy wilderness of Alaska? Yeah, not often. And the way it’s written, it’s completely entrancing. I felt like I was there, and so removed from the world. The descriptions were fabulous. The setting was perfect for Aurora’s character. As she finds out what’s happened to her and what she has to do, her surroundings mimic her mental state—they are numb, desolate, and stark. Yet there’s this cold, still beauty all around her. She even compares it at one point to "walking on the moon", and I could feel that myself, could visualize it all. I just loved the contrast and parallels there. Awesome stuff. I admit I am also a bit biased when it comes to the setting because I love that region of the world and think it’s gorgeous. Oh, and I used to work at the Arctic exhibit at Sea World haha. So...I have a fascination with the terrain, wildlife, aurora borealis, and just that environment in general. Before I go all fangirl (too late, I know) and ramble on some more, I'll just say...read this book! Fane is no Edward Cullen, and Aurora is no Bella. I'm already dying for the second book. Unfortunately it looks like I'll have to wait a while for book 2 to come out, but I'll be first in line when it releases. (less) | Notes are private!

It told me to put on my shoes, pack a small bag with a few necessities and grab my purse. And so I did. There was no logic or any sense of purpose except that I knew I had to do something other than what I was doing, or I might not make it through this." Okay, well. *wipes brow* It's pretty clear why this book is #1 on the bestseller list. After a rather emotional breakdown upon completing this last night, and a hellish morning book hangover, I finally feel composed enough to at least say a few words about my new favorite book. This is positively the best contemporary novel I've read...probably ever. This is one of those books that I need to have on my shelf in print and that I'm sure I'll revisit time and time again. It moved me in so many ways and just completely ripped my heart from my chest, then put it back, then ripped it out again...and I literally feel like I've lived a thousand lives while reading it. Yeah. Not everyday you come across a book like that. And when you do, you cherish that kind, because you know it's so embedded into your memory that it's become a part of you. I won't rehash the whole story because 1.) the synopsis (sort of) does that for you, 2.) I wouldn't be able to do it justice, and 3.)I'm just so worked up right now I have to get out my thoughts on the book. So I promise, no spoilers. :) Basically, this is first and foremost a love story, but don't be fooled by that. It's not a simple romance. Not in the least. It's also a coming-of-age tale (for both main characters), a story of grief and loss, life and death, and a general "search of the soul." If you are AT ALL a free spirit like me, you will completely GET this book. You will relate to it so much. Andrew and Camryn are all about living in the moment, traveling, seeing the world and finding out whether the air feels different on their skin in another country, making money by singing in bars, washing dishes...you name it, these people are free and yearn to break societal restraints. All of them. I can't even tell you how many times something came out of Andrew's mouth where I was shaking my head, saying "yup.YUP!" From going to college to working a mundane 9-5er, Camryn and Andrew are all about the nonconformist mindset--but not in a rebellious way. They just want to live presently, feel, love, and be who they are with no apologies. One thing I will say is...avoid spoilers at all costs. Seriously, stop reading reviews and just go read this book. If you come across spoilers, it will ruin the experience for you. And this book is meant to be experienced. I just can't praise it enough. Last night I was pacing my garage, swearing like a sailor and smoking my husband's cigarettes...I'm not a regular smoker but this book compelled me to bum some some from him...all because my brain felt like it was going to explode with emotion. This morning, my throat is dry, my eyes still puffy from crying, and I am so exhausted, my hours of sleep feel completely cancelled out. I'm pretty sure I dreamt about this book. It's that entrancing. I sincerely hope this book continues to steal the #1 spot on every bestseller list, gets a movie deal, you name it....because it absolutely deserves it. The characters are quirky and genuine, their chemistry is magic, and their journey is beautiful. Happy reading, guys. You won't be sorry. (less) | Notes are private!

HEAR ME ROAR. Okay, first off--those 5 stars are for Jodi Ellen Malpas' phenomenal storytelling. The woman is a genius at bringing you inside Ava's mind, immersing you in her thoughts and emotions. This story was completely consuming and deserves 5 stars for that alone. I love this woman's writing. As for my feelings for the story and for Jesse and Ava...that is a whole other matter altogether. I'm beyond devastated and conflicted. They both ripped my heart out and trampled all over it. In book one, I fell hard for Jesse, and I absolutely loved Ava's feisty personality. I was really rooting for them. I knew the This Man Trilogy would be my new favorite in the contemporary world. This book, though, made me just want to scream at Jesse and tell Ava to run for her life and never look back. She is such a masochist, and frankly, I have no idea how my heart is going to handle the third book. This book wrecked me. I don't know how much more I can take, watching Ava get hurt over and over again and watch as she forgives Jesse so easily. Like Ava, I fell hard and fast for Mr. Ward. I experienced all of the overwhelming passion, love, and intrigue she did, and my heart broke when hers broke. Because I felt what her character felt on such a strong level, the ways Jesse betrayed her burned me so bad and in my eyes are not at all redeemable. I just can't accept the things he's done and I won't be able to look at him the same again. More on that later, but first... My rant. You've been warned. I need to vent. I knew this book was going to make me crazy. I knew it would be intense. I had no idea just how much of an emotional roller coaster it would be. I'm not exaggerating when I say I'm still fuming, still crazy mad, crazy pissed, crazy...crazy after reading this story. For the love of all that's holy, where do I even begin?! Let's see, what on earth made me craziest? Oh, I don't know... -Could it be the fact that we have to experience all that Ava does, watch as she is run through the ringer over and over again because of Jesse's lies? - Could it be that every time Ava wants Jesse to be honest with her, he distracts her with sex and she gives in EVERY TIME? I can't count how many times she said to herself, "I'm standing my ground". Two seconds later, she's on her back. - Could it be the fact that Jesse repeatedly freaks out if a man so much as looks at Ava, yet he can get all cozy with "close friend" Sarah, run off and "help" Coral because he suddenly has a conscience, and work at a sex club everyday? Um...no. Just, no. Sheer hypocrisy! - Could it be that Jesse repeatedly brings Ava to the Manor, wants her working on the Manor's extension, and gets all irritated when she clearly doesn't want to be there? He lays guilt trips and bugs her to be there with him, knowing damn well it hurts her to be around all of the women he's been with. Could he be any less considerate or more dense? For crying out loud! Seriously?! Most of all though, the big bomb that turned my love for Jesse Ward upside down was (view spoiler)[the fact that he CHEATED ON AVA. And no, not with one woman. Or two. Or even three. But MULTIPLE women. Over the course of the four days he left her in book one. They weren't technically on a "break". And even if they were...SOO NOT OKAY! Rage, people. RAGE--that is what I felt when he confessed this to her. (hide spoiler)] And for the record, I don't care how sweet the ending was or how much he went out of his way to do what he did in the last few pages. I don't care how many times he told her he loves her or how many times he kept saying "It's all about you now." I don't care how "scared" he was by his feelings for Ava in the beginning. I don't care how tortured he was or how empty of a life he lived, blah blah blah. None of that, and I mean NONE of that can erase what he did during those four days and during the scene at the end when (view spoiler)[ Ava finds him in his office being whipped by Miss Pouty Lips (hide spoiler)]. I can't even go on talking about it anymore because my blood pressure is already through the roof. Bottom line, Ava was betrayed. I feel betrayed. I loved this book, but I hated what it did to me. I am angry that I hate Jesse now because I really wanted to love him, and angry that Ava accepted and forgave him for the things he's done so easily. I sincerely hope with everything in me that I'll be able to find even a shred of redemption for Jesse in book 3, but I'm not at all confident that I can accept the things Ava has as easily as she did. It's going to take a miracle for me to fall back in love with Jesse after this installment. Regardless, I love this series and want to see a satisfactory ending for this couple. If you can handle infuriating betrayal, secrets, and emotional whiplash, continue This Man with Beneath This Man. This series will take you on one hell of ride. (less) | Notes are private!

I’ve b...more (Spoilers hidden) “I want to look after you forever.” This book. This damn book. This damn book has left my mind spinning for the past few hours. I’ve been trying to figure out how to even begin explaining my feelings, because I don’t know where to begin. So, I give up and am resorting to word vomit. I think the only other book I’ve read that made me swear, pull my hair out, and want to hurl things at the wall as much as this one did was Avoiding Commitment by K.A. Linde. But I loved every second I experienced those strong emotions. It’s why I read. To feel. And I feel like I lived after reading this book, no matter how angry or frustrated it made me. It was completely addicting. If I want to scream, punch something, jump up and down and cry, or laugh because of a story, then sign me up! The author did their job. Jodi Ellen Malpas is amazingly talented. So... First, for readers who are not fans of Travis Maddox, Christian Grey, and similar book boyfriends....you will absolutely loathe Jesse Ward. I am not a hater of said book boyfriends, but Jesse Ward definitely takes the term “controlling” to a totally unhealthy, new level. There were countless times that he infuriated me, and even I felt smothered—possibly more so than his fictional girlfriend, Ava. He held Ava against her will many times and it drove me seriously mad. The guy is certifiably nuts. It wasn’t until I got to know him better, around 50 % -ish into the story, that he become at all endearing to me. Yet the whole time, even while he’s being a crazy, hot-headed stalker, you know there’s a reason he’s behaving the way he is, which makes you want to peel those layers back and discover his secrets, and then you start to root for Ava and you can’t help but start to root for Jesse, too. You know something is off about Jesse from the beginning, the first time Ava meets him. You can tell something’s shady with (view spoiler)[The Manor and what he does for a living (hide spoiler)] but you aren’t given too many details. The whole time you’re basically waiting for the bomb to drop. And when it drops at the very end, let me tell you, your heart will be ripped from your chest. The whole story is a push-pull between the two leads, while both of them try to figure each other out and define their relationship. Jesse constantly gives Ava mixed signals, and Ava constantly lets herself down because one minute she’s strong and independent, and the next, she’s caving over and over again to this man of an age she doesn’t know. (Speaking of! In real life, if a man would not tell you his age over and over again, held you against your will, has mood swings like no one’s business, and has the job Jesse has, I’m pretty sure 99.9% of women would tell the guy to screw off right from the get-go.) But alas, Jesse later goes on to steal your heart when you see the side of him that needs Ava, the side that needs help, the side that wants a change, that wants to be saved by his angel. Le sigh. Speaking of angel, did I mention I LOVE some of Ava and Jesse’s songs? Massive Attack’s Angel? Running Up That Hill by Placebo? Great taste in music, Miss Malpas. ;) All in all, this is a story about one majorly messed up man and a strong, young interior designer who falls into his web of crazy the minute she shows up at The Manor for work. If you love super angsty, steamy romances with possessive, alpha men and tons of drama, this is the book for you. It’s tormenting and at times very frustrating to read, but impossible to put down. Final thought: One thing I have, have, HAVE to know in the second book, which I don’t think is made super clear in the first is (view spoiler)[if Jesse has mixed business with pleasure at The Manor for years, has he been cheating on Ava during the time they’ve been together? If so, that’s a huge deal breaker for me because it makes me sick just thinking about it and I can’t see Ava get hurt like that! But I’m assuming that’s not the case. (hide spoiler)] Here’s hoping book 2 gives me that HEA I desperately need. I need to see Jesse saved, and Ava safe and happy. Crossing fingers... (less) | Notes are private!

"I don't believe that what comes after depends on anything I do at all. I am better off doing as Abnegation taught me: turning away from myself, projecting always outward, and hoping that in whatever is next, I will be better than I am now." What a ride! Wow. I have no idea how I'm going to wait so long for the next book! Thanks to my friend Chanda, this is my new favorite dystopian series; I never would've picked this series up if she hadn't recommended it to me. Thanks, Chandee!! <3 Just like Divergent, Insurgent is non-stop action from cover to cover. I was so stressed reading this book and couldn't put it down until I knew what would happen. At the end of every chapter, I'd tell myself, "Just one more chapter" but of course, it was never just one more. ;) Basically, the entire story keeps you guessing until, literally, the last page. The whole time you're trying to put the pieces together, and the suspense is just killer. Loved Tobias even more this time around! Tris made me really mad in this installment, even though I knew why she was doing what she was doing, but by the end, I was glad she made the choices she made. All around an awesome read with kickass characters, a swoon worthy book boyfriend, and touching themes that are both universal and eye opening. 5 huge stars!(less) | Notes are private!

Let me just start by saying the last paragraph of this book gave me goosebumps. This entire story did, but those last few sentences...just...wow. I've read a lot about Veronica Roth since I started reading this book, and I learned she's Christian and an author--not a "Christian Author," and it's obvious--but not preachy in any way--that she infuses her beliefs and questions into this series. I loved the last paragraph because in many ways, it sums up where many people of Christian faith who are not a part of organized religion--like myself--find themselves. And yet it's so universal that it applies to every area of life where we decide to belong, fit in, find purpose, or identify ourselves in some way. I appreciate her honest, transparent writing. It's smart, to the point, and challenging. I think some writers who also happen to be Christian feel the need to saturate their work with their beliefs, instead of simply writing about the world and what people really go through on a daily basis, with no filter. Just raw truth of what people go through and experience, no matter their religious affiliation or walk of life. That's not to say there aren't "real" people who practice certain religious lifestyles or uphold certain virtues, or that they are any less "real" or valid in the world. But I appreciate when the focus of a story is on our everyday human flaws and when it challenges us to face and explore them. Why do we do what we do? Does it even matter? If you know me and chat books with me, you already know I'm against censorship and believe there's no greater honesty in art than art in its truest--and sometimes most painful--form. My own writing is not sugar coated. My characters swear, drink, smoke, argue, hurt feelings, make mistakes, and bleed. The focus is on their hearts, the core of who they are and what they value, and what they learn about themselves, not on what they do. It's the heart that matters, no matter what you believe in. Why am I going on and on about this? Because honesty is what I took away from this book, and it made a huge impression on me--honesty about who we are and what we struggle with. It was beyond inspiring and like a breath of fresh air. It was simple to read, but challenging to think about, much like the Hunger Games, only in a different light. Tris is caught between who she really is, who she thinks she is, who she thinks she needs to be, and who she actually wants to be. The beauty of this story shines in the final chapters, when some of the main characters are forced to abandon what they've been preaching all along for the sake of the greater good. The grey areas start to surface. Walls are broken down. Everyone has to reevaluate everything they've ever known and start from scratch. They have to think for themselves, without some organized part of the government, philosophical belief system, etc. thinking for them. I love that, because isn't that life? We can either choose to live based on what others tell us, or we can search for the answers ourselves and make a commitment to find truth. I also have to say...I LOVE FOUR. He is officially my new Book Boyfriend and is the reason I love this series more than the Hunger Games trilogy. (I know, I know, don't compare them. But I can't help it. I just read the Hunger Games, so it's still fresh on my mind.) There is actually romance in this story. Unlike Katniss, Tris is actually just as interested in Four as he is in her. Katniss came off very closed off and cold with Peeta and Gale, because romance was not what she was focused on. I'm a romance junkie, so obviously, I'm biased with my preferences. ;) Also, there is no love triangle (that I know of yet, anyway!) If you love dystopian and want a fast-paced, action-packed read with romance, read this book. Your heart will be racing by the end and you'll be ready for book 2 as soon as you hit the last page. Big thanks to my girl Chanda for the lend! <3(less) | Notes are private!

And God wraps the world in second chances and sticky little leaves and mercy, even though some people don't want them.” Initially, this sequel threw me off. My emotions were all over the place and I just wanted the old Gabriel and Julia back—as dysfunctional as they were—and wanted to see them get their HEA. I did not like for one second the fact that so many people were trying to tear one of my favorite book couples apart. Then there was the fact that Gabriel changed so drastically, which took some getting used to. Once I did get used to the new and improved Mr. Emerson, his rebirth was so endearing and it made me tear up on more than one occasion. I’m still in a bit of a daze from his transformation. It was so emotional, so intense. Then as the story progressed, I started to see it completely separate from its predecessor, so I stopped comparing the two. While this sequel was very different from Gabriel’s Inferno, it was beautiful in its own way. Just as the first book focused a lot on the theme of redemption, this one focused on that and much more. I think the theme of hope in God (and one’s self) and the quest for peace was the most prevalent, and that really resonated with me. I’m Christian, so I found myself reflecting on my faith and why I believe in a creator in the first place. The whole “sticky little leaf” conversation is what struck me the most. I loved the message there because I share the view that Julia does—that there is a lot of evil in the world, but there is also good if you look for it. It just depends on where your sight is set. Sometimes we don’t give the good stuff enough credit because the bad is so loud, so distracting. That being said, this installment of Gabriel and Julia’s story made me think more about faith and less about their romance, although the story was still very romantic with plenty of swoon-worthy moments. They really were soul mates and were each other’s saving grace, although they had to find their own individual peace first before they could reunite and be truly happy. Once they did find that peace individually, it made their bond even stronger when they reunited. Reading this sequel felt like a spiritual experience for me and it was an unexpected, welcome one. You can’t help but feel that the author chose his words very deliberately and very carefully, and that made me respect and admire the way the story was crafted all the more. Gabriel’s Inferno is still my favorite, but I loved seeing this couple put to the test in ways they weren’t in book one and seeing them experience those much needed revelations. As usual, SR’s writing was elegant, charming, and meaningful, and I can’t wait to read more from him in the future. (less) | Notes are private!

Tempting the Best Man is a funny, sexy, romantic story about two twenty-somethings who were friends long before they ever got together. But the whole don't-want-to-ruin-our-friendship factor is not the only thing holding these two kids back from being an item. Hang-ups, particularly on Chase's side, keep them from moving into romantic territory. And Chase's reasoning is a touching, sad one. His father never really loved his mother and had no problem cheating on her and flaunting all the women he ran around with. Because of this, Chase's biggest fear is that he is--or will be--exactly like his dad. It takes a heart warming (and humorous) discussion with his brother to realize that by allowing that train of thought to rule his life, the fear and pain he's living out is all in vain because it's really just enabling their father's past to continue wreaking havoc on his present and future. It's only when Chase realizes this that he is ready to face those fears and change directions. But will Maddie welcome him with open arms after what he put her through? Does he want her to? This is a contemporary romance. It's light and funny as most stories in this genre are, but it also has real heart and some substance, which I really appreciate. It didn't feel shallow or fall flat. Like Maddie, I found myself wanting to strangle Chase much of the time, but as a reader, I also really empathized for him and wanted to see him figure it out. His struggles were endearing, and they were what made me so invested in the story. All in all, this is a very fairytale-type love story and I loved every minute of watching Maddie and Chase play cat and mouse.(less) | Notes are private!

Why do I torture myself with love triangles? And what is it about JLA's writing that is so compulsively readable? I have no idea. All I know is this book sucked me in from page one, and by the last page, I was an emotional, nervous wreck! I've been Team Aiden all the way since the start of this series. Then at the beginning of this book, I thought I switched teams, because you got to see Seth spend all this time with Alex, which gave you more time to fall in love with him. I almost forgot about what Aiden and Alex even had together, because I was so wrapped up in Alex's time with Seth. I was rooting for Seth pretty much the whole way, and felt so bad for him so many times....gah, I can't even think straight as I type this. Aiden. Seth. Aiden and Alex. Seth and Alex. Frak! See what I mean? *pulls hair* I've loved Seth and Aiden almost equally throughout the first few books, but by the end of this book, I was BEYOND angry at Seth and just couldn't root for him, no matter what, even if he wasn't completely at fault for what happened. Then my heart just kept breaking over and over again for Alex and Aiden, because I absolutely love them together and finally decided: I need those two to be together. I mean I NEED to see them make it out of this mess and to see them together. I will seriously be devastated if they don't make it, and just as devastated if Seth hurts Alex anymore or if he gets hurt because of....everything. (I'm trying to not include spoilers, but it's damn hard). Anyway, long story short...this was the best book of the series yet. The action-packed scenes, especially toward the end, are so emotionally charged and heart stopping, you just can't flip the pages fast enough. I'm dying for the next book and can only cross my fingers and hope to God it doesn't break my heart like this one did. If you haven't read this series yet, you are seriously missing out. Read it now!(less) | Notes are private!

My cheeks hurt from smiling like a complete idiot for a weekend straight. My chest hurts from constant chest pains--nearly having a heart attack because of the nonstop action and heartbreak. My stomach hurts from laughing like a lunatic. Speaking of heart attacks, the laughter could be from the fact that the heart attack joke from Sanford and Son is mentioned--yes, SANFORD AND SON = Greatest Thing Ever. They just don't make shows like that anymore. Just sayin'. And my head....oh, my head is in a frantic state of disarray over everything that just took place in this installment. I never give spoilers away in my reviews, so I won't break that tradition now, but I will just say that it is nearly impossible to choose between Seth and Aiden because both are such good choices for Alex in entirely different ways, and yet I ache for Aiden--literally ache. By the end of this book, you will see why. So, as much as I adore Seth's humor and all-around sexiness, I am Team Aiden. This installment is very much focused on that love triangle--which for the record, is a huge source of stress as you read this--as well as the developments between what's going down with the Council, the daimons, and the overall Appolyon/furie/pure/half mayhem. Seriously, I cannot stress enough how hilarious Jennifer Armentrout's writing is. I have a massive author crush on her and want to have her babies...and I mean that in the least creepy way possible, of course. Her characters are funny, charming, flawed, and just wildly entertaining, and after reading Pure, my devotion to the Lux series is tied with my love for the Covenant series. If you want a rip-your-hair-out but oh-so-good love triangle, epic paranormal fantasy action with Greek mythology woven in, and laughing fits that nix the need to do ab crunches... Read. This. Book. Bel-Ami is masterfully written, sprinkled with frank, witty humor. I absolutely love Maupassant's writing and this is one of my favorites, despite the fact Duroy is such a horrid character. He's the type of man that you despise—a complete bastard with no respect for anyone but himself. His weakness is his pride, and yet his pride is also the catalyst for his success. Throughout the entire novel, I'm fascinated by the dichotomy. At first, you almost sympathize with him, feel empathy toward his perspective. He's a poor young man who wonders why he can't have what the wealthy have. Why he can't have his own piece of the pie. His desire for a better life almost seems...endearing. “And, as his eye fell on his laundry bill which the porter had brought up to him that very evening, he was seized by sudden black despair. All his cheerfulness evaporated in a second, together with his self-confidence and his belief in his future. This was the end, there was nothing more to hope for, he would never achieve anything, he would never be anybody, he felt empty, inadequate, useless, a doomed man.” Then, as the story progresses, you start to see how small minded and vain his desire for "greatness" really is. It's so limited, with no motivation other than self-satisfaction and self pleasure. There are small nods that show his compassion for others, such as a scene where he's in a church and notices a weeping, praying woman while waiting to meet Madame Walter: “He muttered under his breath: 'Poor wretches. There are some people who really do suffer.' And he felt a sudden anger against the cruelty of nature.” One minute, he expresses what seems to be genuine fondness for his many mistresses, and the next, he shrugs off his disappointment with them by saying, “Women are all whores,” and “Every man for himself.” Then there is the line that further confirms his attitude: “My dear woman, love doesn’t last forever. Easy come, easy go.” Duroy is never, ever content and is driven by an all-consuming envy. This novel is frank yet sentimental, full of emotional tenderness yet cold to the bone, and littered with the dirty truth that power, greed, and sex saturate the world of politics—even then, in 19th century Paris. The reflection on life and death during a scene with the poet Norbert de Varenne and a scene involving Forestier’s death really intrigued me, demonstrating proof that Duroy did in fact question the value of his life, influence, and existence, despite his cynicism and indifference. Within a matter of minutes, though, he’s back to pursuing as much as he can, when he can, as quickly as he can, for the sake of his own satisfaction. It’s almost as if he feels this obsessive need to obtain luxury and success before it’s too late, before death claims him. It’s this desperation in Maupassant’s writing that is so captivating, and why this story will always hold a cozy spot on my “favorites” shelf. If you love period dramas and interesting character-driven fiction, definitely give this a read. (less) | Notes are private!

Okay, so forgive me in advance if this review is completely all over the place and disjointed...but that's what Armentrout's writing does to me. She is positively my favorite YA author as of late, and along with adult romance author E.L. James, she is the only one who can elicit such a strong reaction from me when I read her work. I've said it before, and I'll say it again...the woman has mad skills. Not to mention the kind of humor I love (see the one liner above. Yeah. That's just one of the many hilarious zingers I love.) For those of us who have started reading the Lux series, Shadows is a welcome detour while waiting anxiously for Onyx, book 2 of the series. But it's also completely bittersweet from start to finish, because...well, you have an idea of where it's going after reading Obsidian, book 1. That being said, for Daemon fans, Dawson is a heartbreaking and swoon-worthy character that gives Daemon a run for his money. Granted, he's the polar opposite of Daemon, so there is plenty to love about each of the brothers. I won't give away any spoilers, but I'll tell you right now that I was flipping the pages so fast my mind could not keep up. Dawson and Bethany's story is so sweet and passionate, and the sexual tension can be cut with a knife. I was cringing when they were in danger, sighing like a lovesick teenager when they made out, and lighting up with "aha!" moments as the story unfolded because this installment reveals so much about why Daemon is the way he is and it just made me understand the family so much more. The author really understands the key ingredients to a fantastic YA romance: swoon-worthy guys, realistic heroines, wistful romance, action, and humor. One of the reasons Armentrout stands out to me compared to many other YA authors I read is the humor in her writing. It's sometimes dry, usually sarcastic, and always strategically placed. It's witty, not overly snarky, which I always prefer. Snarky usually comes off obnoxious--which I'm not a fan of--and even when there is snark, it's dry, jaw-dropping funny snark. All of it just makes the characters so believable and wildly entertaining. So...pretty sure I'm gushing at this point, so I'll stop. I'll end with mentioning my favorite scene and why I fell in love with Dawson and Bethany. I'll just call it the "reveal scene," when Dawson shares some information about himself that is pivotal in the story and in his relationship with Bethany. When he sees her reaction and closes the space between them and hugs her...holy crap. It's the sweetest scene and had me choking up because I could literally feel Dawson's relief and appreciation, the acceptance he needed. The whole scene was just so emotional and Bethany's inner monologue was so endearing. What can I say? Just read it, folks. Read the Lux series. If you love paranormal/sci-fi-ish romance, smartass characters, and fast-paced action, you'll love this gem and will be begging for more when it's over.(less) | Notes are private!

You bookish people love teasers, don't you?” Let me start off by saying I am eternally grateful for receiving an advanced paperback copy signed by Jennifer and the fabulous Pepe and Sztella at the recent Orlando signing. It was almost painful to wait until August for this book, so huge thanks to the author and her whole team of people for being so generous during the Daemon Invasion tour. It totally made my summer. On to the review... There are really no words for how much I love the author's writing or how much I love this series, but I'll try to recap what I loved about this book without giving away any spoilers, fan girling too much, or rehashing the whole synopsis. If you've read Obsidian, I'm assuming you already get the gist of the story, and if you're wondering how this one will live up to your expectations...I can promise you it's amazing. And if you think Daemon can't get any better, his character in Onyx will prove that theory wrong. ;) Katy and Daemon are back with lots more action, some steamier scenes, and a lot--I mean A LOT--of heartbreak. This installment was OUT OF CONTROL. I'm talking panic attack out of control. My blood pressure must've been through the roof while reading and I absolutely couldn't shut the book until I made it to the finish line, except for the need to sleep and shower. It was a huge emotional roller coaster, with so many moments that choked me up and brought tears to my eyes. At the same time, I can't tell you how many times I laughed out loud. JLA is one author I read that is always guaranteed to crack me up every time. Her stuff is downright hilarious. Katy makes some bad choices that made me want to strangle her a few times, but she evolves and it made me love her even more, and Daemon is still just as sarcastic and sexy, only a tad different by the end (don't worry, though. Different in a very good way). Some new characters are introduced, one of which infuriated me. Let's just say his name was Bradley, Bilbo, Buckwheat, Bo, Bob, or any other name that begins with the letter "B." And sometimes "Flake," or whatever Daemon felt like calling him at the time! There was a slight, microscopic portion of sympathy stirring inside of me for his character, but when things start to go down and shit hits the fan, I was fuming. As Kat would say, "Oh holy hell to the no." That was so my mantra every 30 pages or so. Aside from tons of crazy action, be forewarned that this installment is sad...in more ways than one. It will pull on your heart strings big time, and the ending leaves you on a huge cliffhanger. So...if you think waiting for Onyx was hard, waiting for Opal will drive you insane. Obsidian was a really nice surprise. I don't read a lot of YA, and when I do, I have to really, really be interested in the storyline. What drew me to this book was the whole alien element. It was so different and so fresh because of the way it was executed. Jennifer Armentrout has mad writing skills--I mean, MAD writing skills. Everything was so vivid. You could feel and see everything so clearly, in every single scene. The concept was unique, the plot was fast paced, and the chemistry between the two main characters is absolutely sizzling. Daemon Black is definite book boyfriend material and Katy is a feisty book blogger (readers and writers everywhere can appreciate this one ;) )that doesn't put up with Daemon's mood swings. She stands her ground, is loyal, and genuinely cares for her new not-so-normal neighbor friends. The characters and their motivations totally sucked me in from page one and I couldn't put the book down. This is an excellent beginning to a new series, and it's a nice break from all of the fairies, vampires, and werewolf YA stuff floating around out there. If you want a fun sci-fi/fantasy romance read, I highly recommend this one. Can't wait for book two...(less) | Notes are private!

This is no place for a girl on fire.” Wow. Wow. Wow. Where do I begin? I actually enjoyed this installment much more than the first and that shocks me because for the first few chapters, I really couldn't get into it. Slowly but surely, though, the storyline became more emotionally charged and so gripping that I could not stop reading. I cared so much about these characters and was desperate to know where the whole plot was headed. Something I love about this series is that just when you think you know where it might be going, something happens and throws you off. It's all so fast paced and riveting that your fingers have to keep up with your brain to flip the pages. I'm not sure what to say about Suzanne Collins's writing other than it is expertly crafted and simply brilliant. This woman knows how to weave a story together and keep you on the edge of your seat. I am absolutely Team Peeta but my heart breaks for Gale, and Katniss is such a strong, fantastic female lead. I want to see them all have their happily ever after and literally want to jump through the pages and take a bullet for them. “We star-crossed lovers of District 12, who suffered so much and enjoyed so little the rewards of our victory, do not seek our fans' favor, grace them with our smiles, or catch their kisses. We are unforgiving. And I love it. Getting to be myself at last.” What stood out for me with this book was the sense of urgency. The feeling that you should never underestimate the human spirit and the will to live, especially when alliances are formed. As the characters navigate this depressing, dystopian minefield, they accept their fate and make plans to die in the noblest way possible; according to their circumstances and the cards they are dealt. Yet as events unfold, they are forced to regroup and reprioritize, and it's in those moments that you see their character, their innate goodness shine. I could ramble on about this, but I'll refrain. I'll just say that this was amazing. Something tells me I need to save my strength for writing my thoughts on Mockingjay, which I'm moving on to next. (less) | Notes are private!

I have an aversion to romance covers that are all about abs and sculpted body parts. Funny, considering I'm a huge romance fan and I read it like it's going out of style. But so many of those types of covers are cheesy and I just can't take them seriously, so I pass on them right away. But when I stumbled upon this synopsis, I had a feeling I'd like the story. I'm a sucker for the whole pilot thing and I love airports, love to travel, and love to fly. Plus my hubby used to fly and went to pilot school, so I already liked the premise of the story. And then Cole took a punch for Olivia in the airport and all he wanted was Mentos. I was hooked from that point on. Olivia and Cole's story is one for diehard romance fans. It’s the perfect combination of romantic and steamy. There are many reviews for this book that complain it's so unrealistic and too idealistic, etc., and in many ways it is. And yet at the same time, all I kept thinking was how it WAS realistic. Here you have two people with pasts they're trying to leave behind them, problems they are trying to overcome, and who are individually trying to be better people—for themselves and for one another. It just so happens that their instant connection and their relationship fueled their desire to make those changes. They help each other change and bring out the very best in one another--if that isn't a realistic look at what love is, then I don't know what is. Plus, as “too perfect” as Cole might seem, saying all the right things and looking heavenly 24-7, he was still realistic in many ways. The guy had a reputation as a ladies’ man that he wasn't too proud of, a full career, and lots of life experience. So he was well-traveled, cultured, and well-rounded. And Olivia’s trust issues and insecurities were understandable given her past, too. My favorite thing, which I really felt by the last chapter, was that Cole and Olivia's emotions and conversations made them jump off the page. I felt like I knew them by the end of the story and I could really picture them in the airport, in San Fran, and going about their business. Cole is protective, sincere, has a big heart, and supports Olivia's career and aspirations, and Olivia is demure, loyal, and self-deprecating, which is actually really endearing. Cole's confidence and Olivia's shyness make them an adorable couple. As perfect as this love story might have been, there were still a few road bumps to keep you interested and keep you reading. I usually read tortured-hero-type love stories, so I found myself waiting for the ball to drop constantly, but it turned out to be just one of the sweetest love stories I’ve read in a while. I devoured it in a night. Mushy and steamy at the same time, this is worth a read if you're a hopeless romantic. (less) | Notes are private!

James here at RachaelWade.com.*** Unconditional love and forgiveness. At the heart, this is what the Fifty Shades trilogy is all about, only readers don’t see this at the onset. Instead, most of them hear about all of the steamy sex and BDSM scenes. The appeal of this series—which can be compared to the addictiveness of the Twilight series—is certainly the scorching hot lovemaking. There’s no doubt about that. This is romance at its finest, with a healthy side of kink. The steam is a perfect blend of erotic and romantic, Ana and Christian’s chemistry so palpable and sexy that you cannot stop turning the pages, no matter how hard you try to set the book down. But the underlying theme and how it is executed in this series, and in this final installment in particular, is what mesmerizes readers from page one. It’s what makes those sexy scenes so effective, spellbinding, and utterly intoxicating. That theme is unconditional love, something Ana has for Christian and continually demonstrates to him no matter how unsure she is of herself or the situation. Through demonstrating her faith in him, she eventually shows him how to forgive and love himself again, and how to love others again, too. She teaches him that he is not “a husk of a man” as he believes himself to be, but is instead worthy of real love because of who he is on the inside. And James spins this theme so well, so profoundly, and so vividly, that you have no choice but to be completely emotionally attached to and invested in the characters. In my opinion, this is her gift. She knows how to connect readers with her characters, how to acquaint them with Ana and Christian so intimately that readers develop a sort of dedicated kinship with them. When Ana and Christian make love—kinkily or otherwise—you feel the same earth-shattering intensity they feel. When Ana cries, you cry with her. When Christian aches, you feel it to your core. When Ana grieves for her “lost little boy,” you empathize with her compassion and want to rescue them both from their plights. The steam is steamier, the love is lovelier, the heartache more potent, all because your experience with the characters is so emotionally charged. To top it off, the humor and wit is off-the-charts funny. Be prepared to laugh to the point of tears. Freed in Comparison Without sharing any spoilers, I will just say that this final installment in the series shows all of the above in a really satisfying, bittersweet way. Compared to the first two installments, Freed is just as captivating, but it’s overall lighter and less taxing. There is still enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, but Ana and Christian’s relationship is much more carefree. Ana still has a smart mouth, but she’s even feistier, more mature, and much more comfortable with her role in the relationship. She really is the strong one. Like the first two books in the series, Freed shows the couple constantly trying to figure out how to compromise for one another. It’s as endearing and heartwarming as ever. Many people have mentioned being unhappy about how much Christian has changed, but I feel the exact opposite—he’s still his bossy, Fifty self, only a million times more swoon worthy. His transformation comes full circle in this installment. To me, that transformation is what made the series so beautiful and the third book so satisfying, especially after spending the journey with Ana and seeing all she went through to help him get to that point. The “Fifty’s First Christmas” bonus material at the end just made me fall in love even more with Christian and all of his fifty shades. Final Thoughts It is so rare to come across a romance series that moves you the way this one does. It will be on my "favorite" shelf for years to come, and I cannot suggest it highly enough if you are a diehard romance fan who loves emotional, raw, character-driven storytelling. This trilogy has fifty fun shades of kink, but I encourage you to look under the surface and discover and appreciate the beauty in the trenches as well. When you get a glimpse of the real essence of this story, the fantastic sex scenes are just icing on the cake in the grand scheme of things. (less) | Notes are private!

Redemption, forgiveness, and love, love, love. That is what this story is about. Forgiving yourself and learning how to love an equally flawed human being with the same unconditional love that you are to show yourself. The two main characters mirror Dante and Beatrice, and the parallels are beautiful. This is not your typical romance. It is intellectual, poetic, intense, honest, and in my opinion, nothing short of brilliant. You don't see this type of depth in many romances, and on that note, it's not for everyone. This isn't a light, breezy read. It's serious and thought-provoking, but not without laughs. It will make you think about real love and intimacy and what it really means to value it. It's also much more than romance. It's about personal redemption and the human condition. Here's an example: "Sometimes people, when left alone, can hear their own hatefulness for themselves. Sometimes goodness is enough to expose evil for what it really is." This is a very difficult book for me to review because I loved so many different things about it, and it's so multifaceted. It's very, very emotional and close to impossible to put down. The author's profile states: "I'm interested in the way literature can help us explore aspects of the human condition - particularly suffering, sex, love, faith, and redemption. In my writing, I combine all of these elements with the themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the transformative power of goodness." This is why I fell in love with this book and the author's work--this is a writer after my own heart. This is what I love about literature and why I'm so passionate about it, so I guess I'm completely smitten with and biased toward the writing style, tone, and content. Gabriel's Inferno demonstrates the above in all of its glory. If you want a smart romance with real substance, this is well worth your time. (less) | Notes are private!

I could feel the soft, shivering touch of the lips on the supersensitive skin of my throat, and the hard dents of two sharp teeth, just touching and pausing there. I closed my eyes in a languorous ecstasy and waited--waited with beating heart. What do I possibly say about Bram Stoker’s Dracula? In my book, it’s the Holy Grail of classic horror and romanticism, and its light outshines its heavy cloud of darkness throughout the entire novel, thanks to the noble, pure, angelic qualities of the main characters. Where are the Lucy Westenras and Mina Harkers of the world? And why can’t they be my friends? Seriously, where do friends like this exist in the 21st Century? And don’t get me started on Van Helsing, Quincy, and Jonathan Harker. These guys are loyal and pure to the core, and their devotion to one another during their journey is beyond heartwarming. I am also won over by the their pursuit of the Count and their fight to protect Lucy and Mina, which is an incredible love story, representing love in many different forms and on different levels. With the most beautiful, haunting imagery I’ve ever read and classic lore that’s made me fall in love with writing paranormal fiction all over again, Dracula reminds me why the alluring, dangerous, and erotic characteristics of its monsters still fascinate us today and why they've inspired the evolution of the vampire. Before I ramble any further and my thoughts become more disjointed than they already are, I will just say that this will always be one of my favorite works of art and I’d recommend it to anyone for its use of language alone. "...The stories get passed on and the truth gets passed over. As the sayin goes. Which I reckon some would take as meanin that the truth can't compete. But I don't believe that. I think that when the lies are all told and forgot the truth will be there yet. It don't move about from place to place and it don't change from time to time. You can't corrupt it any more than you can salt salt. You can't corrupt it because that's what it is. It's the thing you're talkin about. I've heard it compared to the rock--maybe in the bible--and I wouldn't disagree with that. But it'll be here even when the rock is gone." There are very few authors who can leave me speechless. Certain works are just so personal and universal that they just hit you like a train and you don’t really feel the weight of the impact until after you’ve had some time to chew it all over. McCarthy is one of those authors, and No Country for Old Men is one of those works for me. It stirred up all kind of things. I really, really wish I hadn’t seen the movie a thousand times before I read the book, but reading the book actually made me appreciate and love the film even more. The story deals with all of the inconceivable evil in the world, our reaction to it and what it means, and whether or not God has a hand in the cards or if he’s turned his back on humanity in some way. It raises questions of how—or even if—we can make sense of it all. It questions what that evil reveals about human nature. Does it mean that evil always prevails? And if so, why? Although I can’t possibly put into words how profound this read was for me, here are some thoughts that came to mind while reading: Biblical. Poignant. Raw. Epic. Before its time. Ageless. Ancient. Disturbing. Honest. Gritty. There were scenes and dialogue that floored me. I’m not sure whether I loved Bell or Moss more. They were both equally admirable, noble men, flaws and all. Their authenticity was straightforward and made them appealing from page one. It was a toss-up for me to decide what I loved most—Bell’s musings or Llewelyn’s inner monologue. Bell’s thoughts were heavy and light, bleak and hopeful, bitter and sweet. Following the mess Llewelyn got himself into was spellbinding. The scenes where he spent time with the hitchhiker were especially telling and made me connect and empathize with him even more. Getting to know Chigurh was an entirely different experience all together. There were plenty of chilling moments during his encounters with people he killed or spoke to, but none more disturbing than when he visited Carla Jean. I was so absorbed in that scene and in the dialogue that I felt like I was in the room with them, could feel the coldness of Carla’s fate and the nature of the devil who’d served it to her. The reality is I could drone on and on about this book and McCarthy’s writing. He’s a literary hero of mine and I tend to gush about him, so I’ll just stop here. Read it, read it again, let it sink in, and appreciate McCarthy’s skills and vision. The man is brilliant and the story is transcendent. (less) | Notes are private!

It's not mine, and I am so glad I gave this trilogy a shot. This is one of the most moving love stories you can ever read. It's intensely erotic and sexy at every turn, but that passion is piqued by the meaning and essence behind Ana and Christian's relationship. To see that type of passion emanate from a couple despite all they endure for one other is nothing short of heartbreaking--and heartwarming, and romantic, and just plain hot--all at the same time. This entire story is really about unconditional love, how far you'd bend, compromise, or try to understand the one you love, and to what lengths you'd travel to commit to that person. It's about faith, trust, patience, and selflessness. *Spoiler Alert* Just FYI: When Christian's mom confronted Elena at his birthday party with the colossal bitchslap, I swear I flew up from the couch like a madwoman with a fist in the air and a victory shout. It. Was. Awesome. But I digress... Fifty is back in book two, bossy as ever (never far), but he is an entirely different character in this book, and from the moment he reunites with Ana, he's a changed man. The prologue and what you learn about him as the story progresses is heartbreaking. The pictures and talk of his abuse are palpable and at times very hard to read. His transformation is amazing. I especially loved Ana in this installment. She had to be the strong one, fight for what was hers, show Christian that she believed in him and in their relationship, and she just really grew up. The sexy banter between the two is back, as are the witty, laugh-out-loud e-mail exchanges. Still, this installment was more serious and had plenty of swoon-worthy moments. The ending blew me away and was not at all what I expected. As for the cliff hanger for book 3, well...things are about to get much more interesting. (less) | Notes are private!

This is positively the epitome of erotic, and not for the faint of heart. The most sensual romance I think you can possibly get your hands on--full of BDSM elements. What really surprised me was how deep this was--it's actually very heartbreaking and dark. An emotional roller coaster. Ana and Christian's relationship is so consuming, dangerous, passionate, sweet, and unhealthy, all at the same time. So you're rooting for it one minute and the next you're wondering how it's possibly going to work out. The more that's revealed about Christian, the more you see how incredibly twisted the whole situation is and where the plot is headed. This is a profound love story: disturbing, haunting, chilling, and incredibly intriguing. One you won't forget and one that will equally intrigue and frighten you, all while swooning to yourself like a lovesick teenager, hoping Ana gets her way and solves the increasingly frustrating, achingly sad, Christian-Grey puzzle. If you love romance, suspense, and don't mind erotica, this is a must-read.(less) | Notes are private!

What to say about this classic? The epitome of poetic brilliance in all of its supreme, angsty glory. One of my absolute faves.
