The heart-breaking beginning almost cost me the whole book (I had to “step away” from Dan and Vadim and gather my thoughts for a few days) but I came back and my guys didn’t fail me.
For every heart wrenching page the reader is gifted with another one full of companionship, trust, passion and love.
Even thought the stories are massive (almost 600 paged each) and the main characters take up the most of it it doesn't become boring, in every page you learn something new and you love the guys more (If that can even be possible). All the other side-characters (Jean, Hooch, Matt, etc, etc) piss me off and I would be better off without them.
A must read but only for the brave-hearted! ...more
Reading a Voinov book is always a unique experience! Unhinge the Universe is taking place in the climax of the Second World War somewhere in the French countryside .
Hagen is a fierce German officer, an SS soldier on a mission to find his brother Major Siegfried Friedrichs and the information he holds, when he is captured he comes face to face with John Nicholls a captain of the American army and his interrogator.
John is decoder, a man that exploits weakness and he is determined to break Hagen down, to degrade him and uncover secrets that might finish the war. But step by step John becomes protective of this captive, he is interested in his well being and he undertakes the great obligation of bringing him to safety.
Watching those two MC’s interact is like watching a game of chess, decoding words and gestures, making a step and withdrawing, giving up and retrieving power. Even the sexual play was –initially- a well balanced tool of persuasion.
“”The blade caught there, held for a second, and the thread snapped. It was a quiet snap, but Hagen somehow thought all the tension in the room would release with it, Instead it only bore down on him harder.””
I felt very intrigued by Hagen’s character, he was full of life, full of anger and fire and he thought he was indestructible until he met John. I tried to get in his mind and in his heart, how he might feel, or how any German soldier in his place might have felt; believing that they are fighting on the right side and then realizing the futility of it, trying to survive or be true to a country that is untruthful. Hagen was giving up but never really surrentering and always maintaining his integrity.
“”Now, he was the prodigal dog who’d broken his tether, run a few yards, and come trotting back with his tail between his legs when he realized he was better off with his master. John had vowed to shatter him. He’d succeeded. And now….what would he do with the pieces?””
I loved the way Hagen handled John’s injury and the scene at the hospital was breathtaking…. Plus I love their letters, so breathtaking vulnerable and so plain beautiful.
“”When I am released, will you come for me?””
I'm quite familiar with the way A. Voinov writes (can't say the same about L.A Witt but I will try to remedy that), I know that he can be poetic and I know that his words can be cut like steel but in this book the writing seems almost lyrical even when handling tough subject of captivity, bloodshed and war.
A favorite book, enought said!!!!

After Midnight is a spin off in the "In the Company of Shadows" series by Santino and Ais, it is a stand-alone but fans of the series will certainly love it.
This is the kind of m/m book that I really love, set in a dystopian world, cruel and pragmatic, and without the "kiss and make up" ending.
After a mission gone bad and a major lapse of judgment Agent Adam Blake finds himself to coexist with Gordon Frost. Gordon is everything I don't like in a human being, he is a drug dealer, he is a drug addict, he is insecure, he is promiscuous, and he has zero self-respect..... He can bent and roll over just to make everyone around him happy but usually he accomplishes the exact opposite.
Adam Blake is in serious trouble, the Agency (that we know and "love" from ICoS) is ready to take him off the picture but General Carhart (<3) is ordering him to infiltrate the underground organization that is trafficking the drug Pandora, the same organization that Gordon works for.
This is not a book about love; After Midnight is a book about choices, the small ones that help us make it through the day but the big ones also, the ones that defines us and the ones that makes us who we are.
Adam is a fighter, an assassin but he is also a protector!
““Pandora mutes your feeling. The purpose is to lower your inhibitions-to make you not care about the consequences of what you do.” “Yes.” That was why he liked it. “That”, Adam continued, “is a bad thing.”
Gordon, is a child, a lost soul but he can turn into a fierce fighter whenever his loved ones are in trouble.
“He focused on trying to capture this moment, on not forgetting. There was something special about coming so close to death and managing to escape. He know he would want to remember when he was sober and looking for a moment in his life when he hadn’t been completely fucked.”
There is no HEA in this book, but there is rarely any HEA in real life, and you may feel a little unfulfilled by the romance but the characters are alive and the world is absolutely gripping. If you are a fan of the series then with this book you’ll get another piece of the puzzle, if you are new to this world then you may have an appetite for the rest of the characters that live in it. Either way everybody wins!
P.S This book was given to me by a dear friend who has her name in the Acknowledgments page, Thank you and Congratulations!...more

And I’ve been trying to thing what to write in this review, how can I sum up a story like this one?! And since I cannot find a proper path I’m just going to share some thoughts…… I love these guys Dan and Vadim (him a little more) and I’m so happy they finally got their HEA!!!! After a lot of tears last night today I have a big smile on my face and it’s all because of them.
My favorite points in this installment are: *BEWARE SPOILERS AHEAD*
1)Their isolation in the beginning of the book, I felt so heartbroken and so betrayed on their behalf, both wrapped up in their own problems Dan’s self pity which was essential though for the maturing of his character and Vadim’s career-seeking was also a must since he had to support them both (not the actual truth) but it was also necessary for his character to obtain objective because Vadim cannot function without an objective.
2)Konstantinov!!!! I felt tremors in my body just by mentioning his name when I saw him I nearly freaked out! I can totally relate with Vadim and his mental breakdown although I would like to see more of him during his treatment and his struggle to reach the light. It was absolutely unnecessary for me to watch Dan doing the honey-bunny with Jean during that period of time!!!!!
3)Katya and their children. It was a moment I was expecting and it turned out beautifully, not all mellow but with the proper dose of honesty. And I liked how Vadim found his children, with Nikolai a deep friendship and although we didn’t see much of Annouska I liked the way he described her in the end: “Whereas Anya was much like he’d been when he was young. Aloof, masked, fierce in her dedication to follow her own way, whatever the cost, whatever the sacrifice. A narcissist of the highest order.”
4)Their domestic life! I fucking loved watching them in their house, behaving like a totally normal couple with the cooking duties and the coffes at the kitchen table! Totally abso-fucking-lutely loved it!!!!! And no one not even George or Jean are going to take that image away from me!!!!
5)Bonus points to Beouvais and St. John and of course to Dima and Markus gay couples with steady relationships based in honesty and love, the exact same thing as Jean (!#*!*$&!#%&$#@#!)
6)And finally their wedding, not in a million years I could have thought that I could actually be invited to their wedding!!!!! From the way Vadim actually proposed to Dan and the flat and practical logic behind the actual cause. I actually didn’t understand how the tears started running from my eyes but at some point I couldn’t read and my hubs started shouting what was wrong!!!!!!!!!! The kilt, the steel rings, the all essential lapis lazuli and most of all their family! Dunkan calling Vadim brother: ““We have long ago welcomed you into our family.” Duncan said to Vadim, with his warm smile, arms open, “let us welcome you once more, brother in law.” Vadim embraced him with no second thought, just the word “brother” held a strange magic for somebody who couldn’t imagine how it could have been, growing up as a team, sharing blood like that. Brother and sister in law.” Dan saying “I love you” to Maggie using after all those years her name instead of Ma’am! Dr. Williams being so proud at Vadim and the life he accomplished despite everything that has happened to him. And the actual ending of this journey Vadim and Dan lying in bed happy and married just sharing the same dream right at that point. “”And in the meantime, the world has changed Just for us.” Vadim grinned, liking that preposterous idea. “They ended the Cold War, made marriage possible…” Just for us. As if. But it was a nice indulgence to joke about it. “Sure, just for us.” Dan chuckled softly. “And they made sure they put a lot of people into the world, just for is, to have friends, mates, and family.” The most joyful and optimistic thought! Just imaging the world changing to accommodate me !!!! But Vadim and Dan deserved it and they deserve much, much more!
Well, that was just about all I had to say! During this journey I came across many things I didn’t like, things that freaked me out and raised my blood pressure to high and dangerous levels and there are all connected to infidelity. It is something that’s quite hard for me to understand and to consent but I’m not going to mention them here, I’m going to remember Dan and Vadim always with such a sweetness which almost amazing even to me. I love those guys! ...more

I really liked both MC's and their extented family was pretty interesting. I loved Crick's POV the guy was awesome, he used his sarcasm and dry humor to get out of every bad situation and Deacon was a perfect cowboy in every way and every damn cliche I have in my head.
