Paris in Love: A Memoir by Eloisa James #REVIEWED by Charlotte M. Liebel
A TALE OF #HUMOR + #Family_Fare
Enjoyed the personal accounts of PARIS IN LOVE: A Memoir by Eloisa James. Her husband, kids, neighbors, and community tickled my funny-bone creating laugh-out-loud moments! Her memoir was very much like the daily life of most families with some exceptions. The challenges are: living in France for one year, schooling for teens, learning to cope with older kitchens, different foods, and the sidewalk homeless. Less is more!
Making friends and numerous adventures of her kids expressing their displeasure of French teachers and comparing them to learning in the U.S. are most entertaining. Enjoyed the asides about her husband, mother-in-law, and chubby dog, as well.
Eloisa James and husband, with great courage, sell their U.S. home, and take a Sabbatical leave from University life to rest, enjoy their children and a new culture. Their family then experience an adventure of a lifetime in Paris! Bravo!! (less)

He never thought his client would skip town ~ not this sensible and wealthy banker’s daughter. So, Gabe turns Bounty Hunter and follows the one ‘lead’ his undependable ex-brother-in-law, Hal, finds.
Gabe McGregor, protagonist, boards the Mississippi riverboat ‘Bayou Belle’ and spots the gorgeous redheaded blackjack dealer across the gambling casino. Ky Taylor is shy and everyone is a challenge. Now, the handsome Western Dude, sporting his ten-gallon hat and cowboy boots, is left with drooling desire as she leaves the room. Co-owner of the riverboat, with her husband Jim, is Rosie Ortega. Experience impressive learning curves of novel writing. Read about the misnomer terms that, over the years, are circulated. One such issue the book clarifies is the description of ‘The Novel.’ It is not a short-story. And there are many story books on library shelves that are not novels. The Novel, in fact, is identified as a ‘long work of fiction’ about believable people living believable lives and all of it is faked and not true.
Within this framework, the novel contains ‘expectations’ and these are defined as: believable people with believable goals that succeed or fail. Additionally, there are ‘structures’ necessary when developing the writing of a believable story. Techniques are building blocks of creative writing that build people in a ‘story arc.’ Another challenge is the ‘character arc.’ The development of these writing skills are used by you, the novelist, in choosing among: fiction genres, sub-genres, and cross genres.
In explaining ‘Writing Techniques of the Pros’ Ms. Style delivers examples and exercises in each chapter. Fiction writing builds conflicts. It has its own purposes and conventions and some are: action, dialogue, feelings - thoughts, and background. Characters, emotions, and moods are moved by the dialogue and action. These are implied and evidenced by the written word.
If doubts are part of the reason for your unpublished novel, read this book. Techniques to become a prolific writer of novels are inspired. This book explores greater expectations for literary content. If your goal is to gather all knowledge and become a pro-novelist and write a better novel, this book gives excellent insights.
‘Bootcamp for Novelists BEYOND THE FIRST DRAFT: Writing Techniques of the Pros’ by Linda Style is recommended to earnest novelist writers who need to hone their skills. Dedicate yourself to this advanced study. It is delivered in a conversational tone. (less)

What do I know about the Louisiana bayous, voodoo, magic, and swamps? THE FIRE OPAL (A dark fantasy novel) by Connie Flynn is devoted to mind-boggling research. The story is so eerie that readers will believe some of this story is a fantasy based on factual experience. Boy! Is it ever dark! The storyteller takes you through so many twists and turns that her imagination keeps you hooked for 416 pages.
The legend is about the women of the family who have been the Guardian of the Opal for years and it’s a strange gem. Liz Deveraux is next in line to carry on with duties although she tries to refuse. Legend has it that the men in their lives are their support except for reasons of divorce, infidelity, and weakness of character that make them a poor risk. Good, huh!
The Devil, Ankouer, lives as a powerful ‘presence’ and cannot be apprehended due to obscure magical powers. Few city dwellers believe this Devil exists whereas the bayou folk never speak about the ominous presence. The mystery is that if Ankouer exists, why can’t this Devil be found? Murders happen and suspects are next of kin.
There is a beautiful romance to be experienced in this novel. The mysterious disappearance and return of Liz Deveraux has the town baffled and whispering. Until now, Liz was thought to be dead. Recently, Dad sent for her because her mother died. Her wake is being held at a prominent friend’s home and the whole town is gathered.
Our hero, Zach Fortier and Liz were an item set to marry in their youth until, one day, his beloved Liz mysteriously vanished. There are major issues and painful memories that need to be resolved between them. But get ready for other ‘encounters’ because their relationship, although complicated, involves them in eerie voices, people, and investigative mysteries and deaths .
There seems to be a huge gap of information about deaths in the swamps. Zach, our hero, is trying to uncover leads for his connection. Dad walks around saying that his wife was killed by the Devil, Ankouer. He doesn’t know how to explain himself so that others will understand but swears that it’s common knowledge, among older cajun families.
THE FIRE OPAL (A dark fantasy novel) by Connie Flynn is a fantastic story for readers who want to be emotionally involved. It is filled with mystery, complicated encounters, and intriguing characters. Buy at Amazon Kindle.

The mood is uptempo, especially, between two female rival witches in Edinburgh, Scotland. The one leading has the hardest time getting her subordinate to follow directions. This push and pull relationship reminds the reader of earthly mom and daughter catfights. Except that witches live for hundreds of years and the situation is just more complicated.
The earthly job description for the enchantress, Elle Chambers, is that she has an admirable reputation for solving insurance claims. So, when expensive insured articles are lost or stolen, she is called upon to find baubles, famous antiques, or world renowned and costly paintings. This talented detective-investigator skillfully unearths treasures and returns them to the insurance companies who are pleased with her track record and pay her well. She admits to using mystic powers, at times, but no one notices. Well, she says, she has to earn an independent living otherwise her life would be dull in-service to her coven. And she prefers her freedom to make her own choices.
Here comes trouble. Complications arise soon after she visits a new client and promises him her services. It doesn't hurt that he is out-of-this-world gorgeous. The problem is not with Niall but with her `leadership!' Suddenly, Elle is not only confronted by Rebecca but her disagreeable male reinforcement. As far as Elle is concerned, it is none of their business who she chooses to work for. But they make it their business and keep secrets from her, as well. According to them, they are protecting her.
Danger lurks. She is given choices. Although she's stubborn and brave, she cannot deny the threatening atmosphere. However, all their secrets make her all the more defiant and suspicious. What is the danger to her in accepting this job? Why don't they explain? Against her will, they want her to turn the job down. Why?
Elle uses persuasion on her `friends' and promises that she will do her detective work as fast as she can and get out of their way so they can pursue their business with her client. Is she being honest? Will she help them with a wretched plan? Maybe. Fine.
Not fine. Her client's chemistry seems to draw Elle to him in mysterious ways. Niall even talks her into visiting a crowded nightclub. He helps her discover hidden secrets about herself. She begins to question why she didn't learn these secrets from her mother and tutors. Danger is about to jump up and bite into Elle's `Witchy Business' plans.
Twisted scenes ~ full of surprises ~ captivate readers in `Witchy Business' by Eve Paludan. The dialogue is great and the storyline is highly energetic. It reads like an Alfred Hitchcock movie with tense suspense. That good![@Amazon Kindle] (less)

Sit on the edge of your seat as you get adventure, excitement, and terro...more FINDING JESSIE: A MYSTERY ROMANCE by Eve Paludan
[Charlotte M. Liebel Review]
Sit on the edge of your seat as you get adventure, excitement, and terror in the story called, ‘FINDING JESSIE’ by Eve Paludan. It is a ride worth taking when Jessie is the heroine driving her motorhome, sleeping on friends’ couches, and sharing her gourmet cooking talents for friendly stopovers. Sam Gold is the reluctant older beau who gives-in to the irresistible Jessie’s argument that he is, indeed, attractive.
Jessie Wilcox Smith is a great conversationalist and her new admirer finds her philosophy fascinating. Sam listens to her in rapt attention and trustingly shares himself. However, Jessie seldom shares her personal background except as psycho-babble chatter that discourages further discussion ~ and for good reason.
We learn from our first lady of breathtaking features -- blue eyes and red hair -- that she is a vintage collector of children’s books. Sam, too, is a vintage book collector with a lawyer’s background and clients to support his expensive collections.
It is rather hilarious and shocking that, within seconds of their meeting, Jessie and Sam go beyond nice to a push-and-pull war over a child’s book. Each one gets a grip of the same storybook and rip it apart. During the struggle, they knock over stacks of books shattering the sound barrier and embarrassing Sam who is better known as a dignified and respected collector. The couple are escorted out of the estate.
Outside, they apologize and decide to head for a coffee shop. This is the beginning of their whirligig of romance with never a dull moment.
Author Eve Paludan directs her philosophical journey for ‘Finding Jessie’ through the richness of love, life, and pursuits -- some happy and others dangerous -- searching haunting shadows of Jessie’s hidden past. The psychology of a mysterious relationship works for the couple through mutual admiration albeit challenging. Sam’s enchantress Jessie is rather richly camouflaged in cuteness. But is she evil?
Sam Gold’s father had left him with a profound belief and understanding. He taught him how to be honest, loving, and truthful. Further, he taught that ‘Listening’ was by all means a virtue. This teaching received by Sam can, probably, be attributed to his unwavering support in Jessie’s search for her hidden reality. It is in her fear and trembling to recall her memories that Jessie struggles and this is a cause for alarm. Why can she not remember? What is the trauma that erased her memory?
In such circumstances, it is conceivable to believe that Jessie was dealing drugs and a prostitute. However, her demeanor is portrayed as a sweet and thoughtful person and contradicts this image. Ghostly shadows are very nearly destroying Jessie’s sanity.
So, no matter the obstacles, Sam is faithfully searching for truth. As an attorney, he has colleagues and connections in the FBI and Central Intelligence. In fact, an investigation is what he wants.
The last pages that caused a ‘freaked-out’ reaction happened at midnight as this reviewer was taken by surprise. Believable. Incredible.
A tale with twists and turns that reads like last nights’ latest news awaits readers of ‘FINDING JESSIE’ by Eve Paludan. Audiences: Be aware of sensitive neighborhood reality issues in this story. This is a page-turner.
