This is a standard romance/career story except for the interesting twist of the two best friends who have an underlying competition. The weird thing about this is the set of questions at the end, as if there were actually something to discuss here.(less)

Jess has to decide how to respond to Marcus' proposal of marriage while he is a Princeton freshman and she is starting her adult life in Manhattan. Jessica's snarkiness is more suited to an adult (as in this book) than to a teen (previous installments). Reminds me of Bret Easton Ellis in its crisp understanding and satire of pop culture. More coming of age than chick lit.(less)

The centerpiece of the story is the main character, Addie and the moving portrayal of her incredible loneliness and deprivation. Two little girls, each troubled in her own way, become best friends at age nine. Valerie gets accepted by the in crowd in high school, overweight Addie does not. The two have a falling out over a bad incident and meet up again on the night of their fifteen year reunion with many hijinks including an attempted bank robbery and a cross country flight in an ancient station wagon. Weiner loses points for ignoring Chicago and its appeal in this story set in a Park Ridge -like suburb. The characters want make it in a big city by which they mean a city in the eastern US. (less)

Here, the heroine is apprentice to her grandmother at her family's 100 year old custom shoe business in Greenwich Village and falls in love with a chef, trying to balance her busy career and love life, leading to philosophical reflections on what she wants out of life. Set in the present rather than the 1950s as is Lucia, Lucia. Compulsively readable.(less)

In the usual outlandish Kinsella plot, twenty something Lara, a struggling businesswoman encounters the ghost of her great aunt Sophie who is looking for her missing necklace. Lara and Sophie, who can only be seen by Lara but who can influence others, become a team, reconciling Sophie and her lost love by uncovering a secret, and resolving Lara's work and love problems. As always the outrageous story rings true within its context and the writing and characters are light and bright and sparkling. (less)

This sequel to the prequel felt a little forced. But of course I was happy to be back with Carrie and find out how she met Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte. At age 18 Carrie ran around town, met everyone, went to a lot of parties, and dressed wild, just like the adult Carrie.(less)

Darcy reels after the loss of Rachel and Dex and continues with her unexpected pregnancy by Marcus. The story trajectory was entirely predictable. Darcy is not as likable or believable a character as Rachel, hence the disappointment with a story focusing on her.(less)

Lower middle class setting: an art teacher escapes from a lackluster relationship with a high school coach to find hot sex with the man she has always unconsciously loved (her sister's ex husband). There are some scenes of mild animal abuse, but overall a light humorous tone, chick-litty, with tepid sex scenes.(less)

In the last episode, it looked like the Brandons would buy a house, but when this one opened, they were living with her parents, every attempted house purchase having fallen through. Daughter Minnie is becoming a true Mini-Me to Becky; she loves to shop. This wasn't the best of the series (that would be the first two) or the worst (that would be Sister). The story ends with a huge opening for another installment.(less)

Set among super-rich and connected young New Yorkers it entails newly wed Sylvie landing in a pool of divorcees frantically celebrating their freedom. They vacation in places I've never even heard of and buy $20,000 bracelets on a whim. Satirizes the rich mommy set, predatory Euro-trash, sexy seniors after young women, and young women after teens. Like Sex in the City on steroids, quite over the top.(less)

Lightly told and entertaining but serious story of April Eppner whose adoptive parents have died and whose birth mother finds her after 35 years. The story focuses on the developing relationship between April and her birth mother and also between April and a male colleague. The love story is touching. The birth mother character is a larger than life tv talk show host, and is annoying. Appropriately, the story has been made into a movie with Bette Midler in the birth mother role.(less)

Jessica Darling and Marcus Flutie reunite when they run into each other at the Newark airport. Both have become less attractive characters, and the story seems thrown together. The wordplay is less clever and more annoying than in the last installment, and Jessica's dominance in their relationship, along with Marcus' passivity, while true to life, is irritating. Set in 2010,the book also contains some totally gratuitous slaps at the recent Bush administration.(less)

Great read in the Marian Keyes tradition, but marred by a rushed and pat ending. Follows a year in the life of three early-thirties friends seeking love and happiness. Epistolary novel about a young author's correspondence with residents of the Channel Islands who learned to love literature while cruelly occupied by the German army. The focus is on the heroine's love and career life, but the horrors of war and occupation are effectively told. So as chick lit, this one has a little meat, not so much with the main character, but in the historical setting.(less)

Because this girl lost her own phone, she lives not only her own life but that of the person whose phone she found in a waste basket. That this person turns out to be an interesting bachelor with a killer smile will come as no surprise to Sophie fans.(less)
