I waited so long for this book AND I reread Ashes (which I loved) just to get all of the characters straight before I tackled Shadows; however I find myself sort of dumbstruck and in shock. My creep factor hit an all time high with this book. I found myself pushing down the bile page after page as I struggled to digest the hideous evil and intense gore that seemed to never end. I thought I had a stomach of steel, but apparently not after reading Shadows.
I love both Alex and Tom and I'm all about characters struggling in the ugliness of a post-apocalyptic world, but I kept waiting for a heroic moment or a momentary break from the Chuckies, militants or people of Rule, but Isla Bick didn't go there. The evolution of the freakish Chucky cannibals served as an interesting twist, but I hate that the madness and hunger for human flesh permeates and takes over the minds of some of The Spared. I missed the tormented, terminally ill Alex from Ashes, but at least Tom's battle with post traumatic stress disorder finally peaked.
Final thoughts: I didn't enjoy this read in the slightest...it was not entertaining and it made me very unsettled and uncomfortable. But here is the thing about Shadows, it kept me turning the pages, invested in the characters and of course I still love Isla Bick! Most of all, I'm still dying to read the 3rd book because there is a truck load of unanswered questions and some mighty huge cliffhangers that will keep me reading. I may need anti-nausea medicine or an emesis bowl for the next book however. (less)
