Ladies and gentlemen, I present a rant for your reading pleasure.
The hero, Lucas – and I use that term loosely, ironically, with air quotes and any other way I can - is a piece of shit.
Here’s how he describes his girlfriend.
Her mint green suit hugged her slender form. Outside, she was a beauty, but her insides were hollow as bird bones. Lucas ignored it for a long time because she’d been a useful accessory on his arm when he needed to make an appearance at some social function. And at one time, she hadn’t seemed so…so shallow. But recently, he’d gotten tired of her cruel, dismissive comments and sickened by her overall callousness toward people.
This is the description of the woman who has a key to his apartment. The apartment that very few are allowed to visit. The woman he has been with for six months.
What kind of retro, 1980’s pseudo-alpha hero bullshit is this? I get it. His girlfriend is a bitch. But what does that make Lucas? What kind of man fucks someone because they are a USEFUL ACCESSORY? And Lucas is sickened by her callousness? Is this story set in bizarro land?
The first third of the story reads like PWP except without the porn. It’s a tease. Instead of porn we get Lucas thinking about how hot Andrei is, how attractive Andrei is, and then some more about his hotness. Andrei is Lucas’ bodyguard but the two act more like they are dating. Even though Andrei is supposedly straight. (And, hooray, GFY. One of my least favorite tropes.)
Plus Andrei is a crappy bodyguard. Lucas decides he wants to go to the empty warehouse he owns. The warehouse in the neighborhood “hope had abandoned.” The warehouse that has already brought one attempt on his life. And they go at night. Because…well, fuck if I know. And, sure, Andrei argues with Lucas about going in. But arguing just thrusts poor Andrei into a “lust-filled haze”. What’s a straight guy to do but relent. Because erect penises, y’all. No blood in the brain to think.
Of course, the bad guys show up. And Andrei’s big plan is to lay down some cover fire so Lucas can make a run for it. I just..I can’t even…I mean…ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!
This story made me feel stabby. So, one star to illuminate my white hot hate. ...more

It's a chance to spend time with all the characters from previous installments as they move forward with their lives. Me, I thought it was ok but I found myself getting a bit bored. It's not that stuff doesn't happen - it does but it was just more of the same old same old angst. These people spend so much time talking about their relationships - not just romantic but the friendships - it's amazing they get anything done. I finished it for the closure....more
