The author does an especially good job at making some of the driving characters behind this effort in New York come to life. There's a good mix of historical narrative with scientific details here. That said, the organization of the book felt a bit forced which became a distraction at times. Still I'd strongly suggest this is worth reading.(less)

For me some of the measures of a good book are the ability for the author to hold my attention, make me believe the characters are real and when I’m done feel a sense of both happiness and loss. Happiness for having shared the experience and loss because I’m not sure when I’ll have the experience again. Plot, quality of writing and such are details. Assuredly they have to be of a certain quality or the book will never succeed. But a good storyteller can make even the mundane entertaining and this book is far from mundane.
