A triTrue Blood meets Blue Blood Micaela works for a company with family and business connections going back to the birth of the nation and previous. A trip to broker a major deal introduces her to a world of cut-throat politics even worse than she's already accustomed to. Along the way we meet a host of supernatural creatures with their own part to play. There are a ridiculous number of extremely handsome hunks running around, but to be fair, it's relevant to the story. Even with all of the boys in the picture, Micaela's most important relationships in the story are with her best friend Nikki, a cop with an mysterious past, and "Kat" the personal assistant and possible rival of Micaela's love interest the Baron. The foreshadowing and hints are just enough to capture interest without interrupting the forward momentum. Mingling local histories and folklore into a believable business setting, Dark Dealings provides a very satisfying entertainment experience. While there were a few scenes toward the end of the book that felt formulaic, the story kept me engaged through to the end.

The immersion in the sights, the sounds, the emotions and the politics lend a strong sense of reality to this imaginative magical fantasy.
Author Courtney Cole clearly did her research on the era, but what really give substance to this novel is the characterization. All of the primary characters - and even some of the minor characters - are richly textured. Cleopatra is especially three dimensional, capable of being cold and calculating when the situation calls for it while remaining a compassionate ruler, loyal to her people.
The romantic tension between Charmian and her fiance Hasani smolders throughout the entire book without ever becoming graphic or overbearing.
The narrative provides a good sense of closure while still leaving room for more stories as we wonder about the machinations of the Fates. ...more

Her grandmother is a celebrity writer and Thistle has spent nearly her whole life on the road. She's excited when she finally gets the chance to settle down but she has a hard time fitting in. Soon she realizes that things in the town of Desire are not what they seem.
Regular high school politics are hard enough to manage, but in this town they are strongly tied to the small town's deeply entrenched political hierarchy. To make matters worse, Thistle gets the impression that some people in town want her dead, literally.
This engrossing first installment of the Witches of Desire by Wren Emerson is filled with teenage angst, the confusion of attraction, secrets, lies, exciting action and magic. My biggest complaint was that the story ended so soon. I'm anxious to read the next installment from this exciting new author. I hope you'l give her a try....more

Shalini brings that same mastery of language to the fore in this wonderful fantasy about a gateway between two very different times and the experiences of childhood that remain the same across time and culture.
Like a number of emerging authors I am anxious to get my hands on a full copy of this delightful story....more
