I really liked it because even though it had the typical girl grows up amongst great difficulty, falls for the "wrong" boy, etc, it has a real story to tell. There is dialogue, historical events going on (her father was a schoolteacher for the "freedmen" in the area. The staory has a lot of substance. It doesn't just wrap up in 200 pages, the story is longer and for that I am thankful. I felt I had something to "read". Now onto another note, unfortunately, unless I haven't heard, this is a stand alone book. It is not the first of a series, or trilogy, which I along with many other reviewers find disappointing. There is so much depth to the characters in this book that it would be great to see how some of the other characters' lives continue on now that they are moving along with their new way of living. There are stories just asking to be written/told. And for this reason I think I really liked this book. I am letting you read the summary from the author to get the book description.(less)

I liked it and look forward to the second book which will be based on the second of a trio of girlfriends growing up and getting married, or not and becoming a widow too soon, and one childless. The second book came out in 2012, but is not at any of the libraries in my consortium. I will have to seek it out from further away.(less)

I enjoyed the mysteries all entangling one by one in this volume that were introduced with book one. Really creative and thought-provoking. I liked the first book and then the second book was just as great continuing on the story and then this was truly the grand finale. Blows away all expectation.(less)

It makes me really look forward to the next book in the trilogy.(less)

She visited her grandmother in the Amish community over the summers in her youth and always enjoyed her visits- even meeting a boy whom she really liked. She grew up and became a reporter overseas covering the children affected during wars and really trying to help them. The story begins as she is returning to her grandmothers to heal after being the victim of a car bomb. A very beautiful story of "coming home".(less)

Not for the kiddies! The cupcakes are all very cool and easy to make. Detailed directions are easy to follow. I especially loved the "shattered glass" cupcake and the bleeding hearts cupcakes. So real looking!!!! If you love cupcakes, but want to do a more "grown-up" version, check this book out!(less)

It was interesting to me because we (staff) could still access the tunnel in the basement. I worked there during the "Great Chicago Flood" in April '92 and had first-hand knowledge of these tunnels that were being flooded by the leaking Chicago River. Granted, our tunnel was a little further south than the flooded ones off Wabash. Reading this book brought back some memories and added to my knowledge just how vast this whole underground network was/is.(less)

Gives a little information on what it might have been like. The main characters in this book switch roles and you have to say, "be careful what you wish for!"(less)

In the early 70s, I grew up in front of the T.V. on Saturday mornings watching cartoons which included massive amounts of cereal advertising. My sister and I both love cereal. We each had our favorites. I was the chocolate and she was the fruity. If you love cereal, grew up loving cereal, and still might eat cereal for dinner, this book is for you! It contains every cereal that ever was made. It has all the facts on it and pictures too. I remembered eating so many that I haven't seen since childhood. Oh how I loved to eat you S'mores crunch (made with golden graham cereal!) YUM!!(less)
