Micheal Crichton claims that he is opening our eyes to the fact that Japanese corporations control more and more of the American market. But in realitMicheal Crichton claims that he is opening our eyes to the fact that Japanese corporations control more and more of the American market. But in reality, this novel is basically just racist. It wouldn't be if Crichton had limited himself to his supposed objective. But the basic premise of this novel is that there are vast differences between how Japanese people think and act, and the way Americans do. Every character in this novel expounds on the perfidy of the Japanese. They are not seen as individuals with their own characters and dreams, but as cogs in a machine.
This books sounds EXACTLY like the anti-Semitic propaganda written in the early 20th century, and even now, about how Jewish interests control the economy, the education structure, and the government of the U.S. It is not a clear-eyed, objective analysis of what's going on. It's the rantings of a man with a pet hatred.
What's even more interesting is that this book was written before the Japanese economic bust. Basically every prediction Crichton makes, everything he says in this book, turned out to be wrong. Japan entered a long period of economic stagnancy in the 90s, that continues now. Basically, if he were to write this novel today, Crichton would substitute "Japanese" with Chinese, and if he were writing 60 years ago, the target would've been Jews. I'm honestly surprised this book did not raise more of a controversy. ...more

This is a book that coversOne of the most entertaining and well-researched books I have read on the topic. And that topic is now just T.E. Lawrence. This is a book that covers the length and the breadth of the British entanglement in the Middle East during and right after WWI. It's written to feature three protagonists - T.E. Lawrence, Kurt Prufer (German spy/agent provocateur) and William Yale (American spy/oilman). It is a a truly astonishing analysis of what happened in the Mid East between 1914 and 1918, and a must-read for anyone interested not only in WWI or history, but also in current affairs and the political quagmire of the Middle East....more
History is not just written by the winners, it is also written about the winners.
A very thoroughly researched book, with a wealth of information in itHistory is not just written by the winners, it is also written about the winners.
A very thoroughly researched book, with a wealth of information in it that most people do not have. The sources used are extraordinary, mostly diaries and reminiscences of German and Austrian civilians, as well as letters and diaries of Allied generals, political operatives, and agents. I was warned that certain parts of the book border on being apologist, but personally I did not find that to be true. It is simply a chronicle of what the German people experienced between 1945 and 1949. If MacDonogh has any ideological bias at all, it is simply his condemnation of the collective guilt imposed on Germany - something most people can agree with, since the millions of women who were raped or children who were starved were seen as 'guilty' in the crimes committed by the Third Reich, when obviously they had nothing to do with them.
Only reason I didn't give the book the full five stars is because inexplicably, it suffers from quite a few typos and editorial errors, and sometimes the writing can be convoluted, with sentences bordering on being run-ons, but after all, it's not a novel.
I think everybody should read this book in college-level history classes, just to understand the quote that I opened the review with. Often we forget millions of victims because they fell on the losing side of history....more

I stumbled on the book at a library book sale, and purchased it for $2, even though it was published only last year. I don't know how I got such a steal. Basically, the author focuses mostly on the several branches of two aristocratic Russian families - the Sheremetevs and the Golistsyns. Basically, as the author points out in the preface, it is a book about the true "losers" of history. A lot has been written about Nicholas II and his family, but these nobles have been completely forgotten. This story is, predictably, tragic, but the painstaking research that must have gone into writing this book makes it an extremely fun read about an aspect of history most people have never given much thought to....more
Though this is an exhaustive work, and deserves to be read by anyone who wants to have in-depth knowledge of the Third Reich, one must remember it wasThough this is an exhaustive work, and deserves to be read by anyone who wants to have in-depth knowledge of the Third Reich, one must remember it was written in 1959/1960, so it does not include some of the information that has since been released. For example, the book states that Hitler's body was never identified. We now know that the Soviets identified Hitler's remains as early as May 11 1945 thanks to Hitler's dentist and the dentist's assistant. That information was not yet available in 1959, when the Soviet Union was still deliberately hiding its confirmed knowledge of Hitler's death and the manner of his death.
Regardless, this is a great, exhaustive read, more than 1100 pages of detailed analysis, constantly supported by first-person evidence of all kinds. A must-read for anyone who wants to know more about WWII and Hitler's reign....more
