Definitely one my favorite debuts from 2012. Why? It's fun; it has the most kick ass boots in all of literature; and it has Puck *grins* It also has Valkyries, a wonderfully mysterious grandmother, and a fantastic Norwegian setting. Can't think of anything else I'd want. It was refreshing to read something so different.
The story and action was fast paced and absorbing, with plenty of pauses along the way to catch your breath and swoon over Ellie and Puck's developing relationship. I have to say that Ellie and Puck are one of my favourite YA couples: they're a real match for each other, and the witty banter that plays out between the two had me in stitches.
If you haven't read this one yet, I'd suggest you do!

This is a wonderful debut--a fast-paced, absorbing mystery that seamlessly blends both speculative and contemporary YA.
After dying in our world, Felicia now belongs to Level 2--a kind of holding place in the afterlife where everything is calm and controlled and inhabitants spend their days reliving memories from their previous lives. But things in Level 2 are not quite as they seem…
This story unfolds effortlessly, alternating between breathless sequences set in the stark, yet claustrophobic, world of Level 2, and the beautifully crafted memories that Felicia accesses from her days on earth, with tons of twists, turns, and revelations at every stop. I could not stop reading!
Both action-packed and tender, you really don’t want to miss this debut. ...more

Something about the premise--a teenaged girl, who's believed to have narcolepsy, actually 'slides' into other people's minds during her 'narcoleptic' episodes. There was something in the premise that reminded me a little of WAKE by Lisa McMann, another book I loved.
SLIDE definitely didn't disappoint. The main character, Vee, was instantly likeable and her voice engaging. At the same time, there was a very dark vibe to the story and to Vee's situation. Vee's isolation was beautifully handled as she struggled to keep her abilities secret while at the same time becoming the sole 'psychic' witness to a serious of mysterious deaths centered around school. Without giving anything away, the mystery definitely draws you in, so much so that I gobbled up the story in an evening!
I'd definitely recommend SLIDE to anyone looking for a fast-paced, but character driven paranormal mystery. Loved it....more

Where's my scythe?CROAK was one of those books that made me smile from start to finish, so much so that I'm tempted to pack a bag and move to Croak! Where's my scythe? Gina Damico's writing is simply effortless, and the story is packed with equal parts fun, heartbreaking drama, and suspense. Lex was a great MC, the tough chick with a heart of gold, whose character develops wonderfully as the story unfolds. And yes, I loved Driggs. Of course I loved Driggs!
For me, the world building in CROAK really sets this novel apart. Fun, fun, fun. The diverse cast of characters who populate CROAK, led by the fantastic Uncle Mort, are worth a read all by themselves.
Definitely recommended. Quirky, hilarious, and exciting.
And a bonus: CROAK'S fantastic metallic cover is not only gorgeous but hugely practical. My St. Bernard drooled on the cover and it wiped right off!! Definitely a bonus for readers who live in homes populated by huge hairy beasties. It's a double win :)...more
