My main complaint is that the book has SOOOO much back story that it is broken into three separate "books" and doesn't really begin to tell the current story until page 115. In media res anyone?
If I could have just started the book at page 115 and had the author reveal the other pertinent information inside the story as it became relevant I probably would have given this closer to 4 stars.
My favorite character wasn't the hero or heroine either, which certainly lowers the rating for me. If I feel more compassion and connection with a secondary character something is really wrong in a thriller/romance genre novel. (I liked Lucinda/Grandma the best - what a true survivor, and the twist at the end didn't make me like her any less as a character!)
This won't throw me off all Linda Howard books forever, but I may trade this one in at the used book store for something I thought was written better....more
