I thought it would be somewhat boring at first, but with in almost the third chapter, I realized that this book was going to have a very good twisted plot. The plot was a little easy to tell, but with the way the M.K. writes you never knew what was going to happen until the very ending page! I loved M.K's writing style, it was unique. An I must say that she reminds me of all three of my favorite authors put together but the best parts of some an the better parts of others. She has a romantic feel to her description very similar to Nicholas Sparks and passion as well. She has the law related lingo an part of her book like Nora Roberts novels, but the main character isn't in any law related career, but describes law related material very well an in a way that's easy to understand. An last but not least, she knows how to plot a twisted ending, an be descriptively vulgar (in a passionate female way) like Stephen King. Amazing book and I can't wait to read her next book!!(less)

It keeps bringing you closer and closer to the climax! It is a definite on the edge of your seat part of the story. I am excited to read the last and final part 6 because at this point in the story series things are changing. In that, I mean, that so far the book/series has been following the movie exactly (except with more detail) and with this part 5 it has slightly changed! So, I am excited to find out and to continue to read if the ending is the same as the movie or has been slightly changed. I have noticed with several of SK's movie VS book's the endings are most of the time different. As in, if it was a very twisted ending in the movie it wasn't as horrible in the book; and if it was twisted in the book, the movie ending wasn't as horrible. So, I am very eager to find out how this ending is going to happen in the book. Another great addition to the novel/series!

I loved the characters and how they interacted with each other. This book is a little corky, but in the end I kind of think that that's what makes it good and interesting. I love how it has this innocents, but yet insightfulness about the story too. It has a lot of truth to it, but you really don't see that about the story until it gets close to the end. However, when you do your heart just melts and you see how insightful this book really is. It is a little unbelievable sometimes, as in, yeah right that would never happen, but every book I think has a little bit of that and I think that is what the imagination is for. To dream and hope that things happen in a perfect way such as the story in this book. However, at the same time, in the way that this story is told, there is also always a lot of heart ache and confusion in real life and I think the author hit it right on the head with this novel.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys heartfelt reads, and stories that are good natured and innocent. Also for parents, this book is age appropriate for all ages. There is no over the top graphically descriptive scenes in this book. Further more, this was a great book and I will recommend it to many!

To jump right in, I felt a strong emotional connection with secondary character Jimmy with respect to the descriptions of the many emotions of childhood. I also loved main character Uncle Cam, so much that I wish I had an uncle just like him. Something about Cam’s personality was very calming, and he as well as the story had a good-natured humor that couldn’t help but bring on a smile. Dog and Butterfly is definitely one of those books where you catch people looking at you and wondering what you are reading, mostly because you are smiling so much while reading it. I was also amazed how effortlessly author John Riffice makes you feel so close to the characters, enough to cause you to feel Jimmy’s pain, even though his character played a secondary role in the book’s theme of love and fate. The author has a way of making the reader feel everything each character is feeling. With that being said, I also loved the change in point-of-view throughout the book. Dividing Dog and Butterfly into separate sections, each told by the book’s three primary characters, lends the reader novel perspectives and thoughts on deep and oftentimes philosophical situations. Dog and Butterfly is filled with wisdom, mostly emanating from Uncle Cam, giving the reader a unique perspective on life in general. The humor and easy flowing words when describing romantic relationships, were always appropriate and never over the top. A very difficult thing to put down on paper, in this reviewer’s opinion, is possibly one of the hardest emotional conversations to convey to the reader. Author John Riffice has a unique way of writing, a naturalness that seems to come so seamlessly. The last third of Dog and Butterfly is comprised almost exclusively of letters that Cam wrote during his stay in Europe while serving in the military during the Second World War. I thought it was absolutely amazing because I feared these letters would be boring. But after reading them, I realized how wrong I was and now wouldn’t have it any other way! I found each letter home very interesting and captivating to read. I loved the descriptions of war and all its horrors, as well as the emotional terror experienced by soldiers on both sides of that horrible conflict, because they were very perceptive and real. The terminology employed by the author in describing technical aspects of the war is very good and appropriate of the time these events took place. Consequently, the reader is transported readily and realistically seventy years back in time. All in all, this book was very heart-warming and up-lifting. There was a brief point (a very brief point, I must emphasize) where I thought to myself Where is this book going? However, if you keep with it you will find that it is wonderful with a superb ending, all written with great purpose. There is an underlying truth to this story’s title. Dog and the Butterfly, from what I have gathered, symbolizes that there is always that one thing that none of us can obtain, perhaps the one thing we want most, no matter how hard we try or want it in life. In this case, the metaphor of a dog that cannot catch a butterfly is representative of Uncle Cam’s lack of success with one particular love interest, which, by the way, is beautifully and realistically described by the author and crucial to the book’s theme. I hope you love Dog and Butterfly as much as I have and enjoy it for what it really is. If you happen to pick up this book before you pick up John Riffice’s first book, Waiting for Pops, then by all means when you are finished you will have to check out Pops, too. It is just as good as Dog and Butterfly, if not better! Great read, and enjoy! (less)
