I am a firm believer in synchronicity and so when pondering my next book selection this little gem of a vampire story dropped in my lap, well, was emailed to me by the author to review, I was more than happy to read it. I believe this story has great potential even though at times it seemed a bit "twilightish"; the author eventually spelled out her own unique story line. The characters are well thought out and emotionally draw you in to their struggle. The problem with many series is the author thinks because they have so many books to cover they can draw out a character's description, which to some degree, it's good to save some surprises, but I prefer to spend a few chapters getting to know main characters and their thought processes. In this case I felt the story moved a bit fast, it could have lingered on Sophia's past for a while before launching her into her scary future. It is not surprising that it takes less time to "hate" the antagonist with little to no information presented, and the author succeeds in this case with "Lucas". I disliked him immediately. (less)

I enjoyed this interesting foray into the world of modern medicine's failure to cure the many sick of our society, rather choosing to treat symptoms with a plethora of pharmaceuticals. A bit over the top response from the main character when he takes things into his own hands. I would imagine a person having studied Eastern medicine would take a more peaceful or zen approach to self treatment and education. (You'll have to read it to understand what I am talking about.) The ending was strange, and unfulfilling, hoping a sequel is coming to answer questions about the ending.(less)
