I have to admit that II loved the old Encyclopedia Brown series when I was a kid. (You know, when we still used things like books to look stuff up.) I have to admit that I was stumped a lot of the time, but when I did get one right, it was great. Google has taken up where Encyclopedia left off. Each short mystery gives the reader all of the clues necessary to solve it. Then the reader is given a chance to think about it before turning the page to see how Google figured it out. Younger readers should find theses tales as entertaining as their parents found the Encyclopedia Brown tales to be....more

Well, it isn't really a robot since he is wearing it. He also seems to have a problem with headaches, but that doesn't stop him from doing the best he can in the test.
This is a straight up fun military sci-fi short story. The ending is a fun little twist. There are only a couple of minor editing glitches, nothing to really cause any worries....more

In fact, you might have to read it a couple of times to fully appreciate it.
The only real problem is with the presentation. Lines will skip down in the middle of a sentence. As you can see, this can impede the flow of your reading. This does not help with grasping everything that is happening in this short but complex tale.
I am not sure how to best categorize this tale or who would be the best group of readers to recommend it. I have a feeling it could be one of those stories people either love or hate without much of a middle ground. I would rate it as 3.5 stars....more

A fairly interesting premise, even if it is one that is familiar. A nice start to the series....more

As a young writer, he knows the kind of story that will make other kids laugh. Billy and Bob are beyond silly and have outrageous adventures as they stumble through life.
The author has a pretty wild imagination and a good sense of timing in his writing already. I really liked the tandem unicycle gag. He returned to the longer story format that he used in his first book instead of keeping with the short stories of the second. You can see his steady improvement in his writing. I expect he will continue to improve with each book....more

The stories are very short this time. Most of them end with the author basically saying he is tired of writing or just wants to stop. I preferred the first book that presented a whole story over these shorter ones.
Still, the book is written by a young author (13 years old) and should still appeal to kids fairly well....more

He likes goofy fun and knows the kind of story that will make kids laugh. It might even get a chuckle or two from adults that stumble across it.
It will probably hold more appeal for younger readers than adults, but that is its intended audience anyway. I do admire that there are fewer mistakes in the writing and proofreading than in a lot of the books by older writers that I have read on the kindle lately. I look forward to seeing how the author's writing progresses as he gets older....more

They range from horror to fantasy to crime stories. Most of the stories are stand alone, but there are several stories in the author's hitman series included at the end.
For the most part, the stories are entertaining. In one of the descriptions, the author describes the story as not having enough meat on the bone to make a full length novel. This actually describes how I felt when reading most of the stories. It was like eating half of a chicken leg. They just seemed like they were part of the story, (or to continue the chicken theme) part of the meal only. But at the same time, you got the whole story package. You weren't left wondering what was going on or what happened. I just wanted more. I guess it is pretty good when the worst thing you can say about a story collection is that you wanted more.
There are a few stories that might bother an individual. Personally, I could have done without the story about the abusive boyfriend, even though I understood why the author wrote it. While I liked the hitman stories, the hitman is hard to like as a character. He is crude and rude to the extreme at times. But then, he kills people for a living so what do you expect?...more

Darren Kiel continues his secret quest to do his part to make the world a better place. He uses his remarkable suit to fight crime. But Darren is not the only person that is using technology to do wondrous things. One of those people is using his technology to be able to target any person at any time and any place. He is using this power to target leaders in different European countries in an effort to destabilize the current situation and possibly cause another World War. Darren is used to working on a much smaller scale though. But when his old friend asks for his help, he finds himself working with a group of people that all that special abilities to stop this new threat to world peace.
This is superheroes for adults. Don't expect aliens that can fly and bend steel with their bare hands or mutants with the ability to turn to ice or shoot lasers from their eyes or anybody that gains superhuman powers after being exposed to radiation, dashed with chemicals or bitten by radioactive spiders. The heroes, and villains, in this story use technology to pull off their incredible feats. The greatest "power" is their intelligence. They rely more heavily on thinking their way through a problem than wading in and bashing things (but there is plenty of bashing things in the story).
Darren Kiel makes me think of Iron Man if Bruce Wayne (perhaps with Reed Richards help) made the armor. He doesn't fly, shoot missiles, or crush tanks with his armored fists. He does use his highly analytical mind to use his armor to the best of its ability, including keeping a very low profile. He knows that the more visible he is while following his mission, the more likely he will be overwhelmed by his foes.
The other special individuals with which Darren teams, are just as believable in their powers and in their motivations. This includes the villain of the story. The story mixes action and suspense to keep the reader wanting to read just a few more pages. The next thing you know, you have read all night and you are going to have a long day ahead of you.
This is a superhero story that could really happen. A story that uses realistic powers and origins for its characters with motivations that make sense. There is no spandex or energy bolts from a characters hands, but it is still one of the best superhero stories that I have read in a long time.
