There was a romance that popped whenever it suited itself. I mean it was obvious that these two loved each other, but it could have been written into the story a little better. The romance scenes seemed a little random and were basically reaffirming the fact that they are a cute couple. But these scenes were sweet, and gained a little more importance when Violet's Biatch (with and Capital B,) of a mother decided to up the anti on the Biatch factor, so Im not gonna complain about this too much.
I really felt for this girl *minor spoiler* Her mother is a self centered alcoholic, using Violet for her own purposes, verbally abusive and at times physically abusive. When Violet finally meets her father, he wants nothing to do with her, which goes with the social norms of the time, but when her mother and father start to argue in front of Violet about how they each didnt want her (for various reasons) and calling her a bastard to her face, my heart broke for her. Not to mention the A-hole that has, up until that point, pretty much engaged to her, telling her that he couldnt possibly think of marrying someone like her, now that it has been publicly known. exsqueeze me! But I didnt like him anyway, so Violet was better off without him...and you could kinda tell Violet had the hots for the other guy anyway... *end spoiler*
I dont know if it was the writing style that seems to go with this genre of novel (i.e. Gothic Romance) but there seemed to be alot of places where I was flicking back pages to see if I missed anything. At the beginning of the book we are thrown right into the story, relationships are well established and the plot is already well developed. This was good and bad. Bad because I was a little lost, asking questions like, wait where are they going? Why? but the good thing was, it was refreshing to have all those relationships already established, and only needing to be developed a bit more. It could have been a bit longer, with more attention paid to bridging paragraphs and scenes (refer back to flicking through pages to see if I missed something) and a bit more care with attention to detail, but, again, I think that could just be a style of writing for a Gothic novel.
Overall this book was a good Gothic mystery/romance/ghost story. Cute and sweet, Definately reccomend to everyone :-D...more
